"Cell, are we gonna get some rabbits? Are we gonna be able to pet the rabbits?" It was the future, and Peaches was a broken man in a broken reality, wandering through the desolation of a ruined world. Hunch backed and deformed from from radiation exposure, Peaches shuffled up beside Cell, looking up at his friend and guardian with the imploring look of a hungry animal. Cell just stood still, stoically gazing across the interminable emptiness of the scorched horizon. Peaches sat down stiffly, and sighed. "Cell, why did Liam eat Henslow? Henslow was my friend, the best rabbit that ever lived. I sure loved Henslow. His big red eyes reminded me of how the moon looked the night the bombs got dropped. I wish we hadn't eaten Liam after that fight with the bad raiders. Even though he ate Henslow, I still think we should have gave Liam a proper burial, not eaten him. The meat sure was good tho..." Cell didn't move, just kept gazing out across the horizon, ignoring the senile prattle of the old man. Deep down, underneath the incessant imperatives of survival, Cell loved the old man. He wanted to find him a home, a quite place to live out the rest of his days in peace. Maybe even a place with rabbits. But no such place existed. Life in the desolation was simple: lay down and die or trudge on with every fiber of your being and die some other day. Yet life was life. Friends were friends. And both were in short supply. If nothing else, a friend was a friend until they died. Then they became meat. It wasn't wrong, just protein. And as Xronad always used to say: [i]"there's nothing wrong with protein..."
