Midseason Rules Changes and Glory Matchmaking Since 1.2.3

This feedback is to help the designers understand my specific point of view on mid-season rule changes. I’ll be using Glory matchmaking as the example, since it’s been the most jarring change of this order that I can recall, and certainly--the most personally upsetting. While I would have loved for the Competitive playlist to stay exactly as it is, I completely understand why it changed, and ultimately I support that change. I look forward to starting it fresh when Forsaken drops. I do have an immensely frustrating (and unfortunately demoralizing) player experience to discuss, and hopefully...the next time a change of this magnitude is made--my point of view will be considered. If something fundamental is going to change about progression, that change should be made at the start of a new season--not in the middle of an existing one. I'm going to use the Glory matchmaking changes to make this point. In quickly browsing the forums, I found two recent posts that lightly touch on Glory matchmaking feedback: here and here. These are not elegant critiques, but the point remains--there are other people noticing the changes negatively. Some context on where I'm coming from with my feedback: * I'm a 1.36 overall k/d and have put in over 1000 comp matches since launch. * I had 1705 Glory points when 1.2.3 dropped. (And yes. I did not get my free 30 points like other folks. That bug appears to be getting looked at...) * When I heard of the matchmaking changes coming in 1.2.3 I was not with the majority in praising the change--so far (and it is admittedly early) my fears have been realized and I'm getting destroyed in nearly every match. 3-12 where one of the wins was a team not showing up , and another was a 4 v 3. ___ I had a plan that was working. I needed to average a certain amount of points every week to get the Redrix, and up until these changes--it was a certainty that I would get it. Here's a screencap of the spreadsheet I built to get me there. Take note of week starting 7/17: https://imgur.com/a/CBPohkd There is a gross outlier, and the variable is 1.2.3. Even with the (much better) loss streak changes--it’s a harrowing difference. The core issue with doing this mid-season is it goes against the stated goal of the playlist, and implies something that is inherently untrue when people have been playing by different rules for two months. You cannot empirically trust that someone with a lower Glory rank is actually lower skilled than you. It was stated in the TWAB that the higher up you go in the playlist the harder your matches will become. That (of course) is true when everyone is starting from the same spot. You will get some serious chop at the start of the season, and then it will settle into you winning/losing roughly 50% of your matches. That's where you enter ladder hell, and that's where "getting better" can actually happen. Right now (mid-season) I do not know where a 1.3 k/d player is SUPPOSED to settle. I don't know how long it will take for the better players to pass me by. That feeling (of things settling and shifting) should be reserved for start of a ladder playlist season--not dead in the middle of it. I was hollowed out playing last night--dejected and trying to resign myself to looking at the calendar for support. I understand that there is a fine line between acting quickly to support the communities wishes and making changes that have some unintended (or even intended) consequences that upset the expectations of the player base. This felt unnecessary and bewilderingly punitive for players like me. I love this game, and I love the people that play it with me. I'm also highly competitive and want those games we play together to be rewarding. With these new mid-season changes--I don't have that. I do believe that will exist when Forsaken starts, but my only recourse now is to just wait and hope that this all settles before Season 3 ends so I can get some definitively competitive matches again. Thanks for listening, and thank you for making this game.

  • I'm hung up on the MIDA catalyst. With that many completions I'd imagine you got it. Do you remember about when, and maybe what rank you were, when you got it?

    • Problem with competitive is that matches are usually blowouts. Matches where players of similar skill play are a minority.

      • Agree! Mid season change is ridiculous and is akin to the blowout about people not being able to do certain content if they didn't buy coo cause it came with the base game! I bought warmind with an expectation and then they changed it midway through! Complete BS! Thanks bungie! Appreciate you making the grind absolutely impossible for part of your playerbase!
