I quit PvP and PvE Endgame... best decision ever.

TLDR:
D2 became an obsession, so I deleted all my gear and started a new account where I only play single player modes (no PvP or PvE endgame) and I have never been more happy.
So three weeks ago I finished a flawless run in trials and celebrated by deleting all my characters and their gear and abandoned my PS account. Why!?!? Because during said flawless run my young daughter asked me to play with her and I told her I couldn't because I was only three wins away from going flawless. The look on her face cut through me. To be clear, this wasn't the first time I missed family time, time with my wife, real world "public events," and etc. to play these modes. Also, I am not saying that this is a good decision for everyone. I am 40, married, and have two kids. It's a good decision for me. During the next three weeks I played a ton of single player games and found that I could save and walk away at any time. I loved it. No need to schedule with others. No laggy crucible matches. No yelling at my tv. No frustration over people that sucked. No frustration over getting my ass beat. No dealing with dramatic clanmates. I was free. Then I created a new account and came back to D2 with a new set of rules. No raids, no pvp, no fireteams, just single player modes. Something strange happened. I started enjoying the game. Once the need to collect and accomplish everything was gone I was completely liberated. I will never get a better devils, a midnight coup, a Darkest Before or any of the other weapons that only drop from these now forbidden activities. But now that I don't play those activities, who cares? I used to delete weapons without even trying them. Whether a gun was good in PvP was the sole determining factor in whether I wanted it or not. I have been running around solo, playing adventures and looting lost sectors and having a blast with blues and greens and whites. Thistle and yew is a -blam!-ing blast! Ballywho for the win! Battlescar? I dismantled that before because of its stats. I'm loving it now. Sure. I'll get bored in a few weeks, but that's fine. I'll just play something else. Walking away from PvP and PvE endgame content has been a great move for me. I actually play other games now! I was a few hundred points away from Redrix, had all the raid gear, had every -blam!-ing weapon in the game and all masterworked. But my life suffered as a result. This worked for me. i have my life back. Just thought I would share.

  • I´m 35 with a 1,5yo son and I know exactly what you mean. The difference is: Once I completely stopped caring about PvP and PvE endgame (especially because of the D2 vanilla PvP and the CoO dilemma) the whole game was uninteresting for me. Running around solo in this game with no real goal is so boring and tedious that I don´t play since december. I tried to have fun with the Warmind story...but I lost interest after maybe one hour of playing it solo. The game basically is dead for me since I stopped being addicted to "being on top of my friends". And that´s awesome because I experienced so many awesome singleplayer games (Wolfenstein2, Evil Within2, Horizon, God of War, etc.) without any tedious grind or boring braindead gunplays and still managed to not even play when my son isn´t asleep.
No raids, no pvp, no fireteams, just single player modes.
This was impossible to do in D1, it was soooo addicting. Thank God for D2. Cured me of my 'Destiny Addiction' pretty quick. Though I did enjoy the last Faction Rally a little too much.

  • I found out by playing d2 that multi player / PvP is not a game mode I enjoy any longer . I find solo games to be refreshing there's no stress and I'm actually having more fun . When I stop playing d2 and turned off my ps4 I didn't turn it back on for week I begin to find other things to do . And when I did turn my ps4 back on it was to play for fun and not because I felt I had too .

    • Sadly that is actually a lot of us. We have allowed outside influences to take us away from the important things in life. Good for you man. Hope you stick with it.

    • I had to stop playing PvP because it was getting particularly rage inducing recently.

    • What is the furthest you can go, Power Level wise, if you never play anything that is considered Endgame - 350?

        • Good for you, gaming on your own terms. This post really highlights why not being allowed to replay story missions is such a bad decision from Bungie. Yes, it is a decision. No mention of this most basic feature, of every game with a story/campaign ever, existing a year after release. It doesn't make any sense. Why does this game have to only shine in content that requires so much commitment. We have to go out of our way to get the good stuff. I am glad D2 is such a turnoff. I did have a great time at the peak of D1. It was all good fun, but had D2 been something that could continue to get me sitting down for more than 2 hours at a time, I might be getting down on myself for truly wasting time with a game.

        • Nice dude. I havent touched the game in nearly 5 months. I wish this game had a more compelling story. Dude imagine a Witcher 3 like Destiny game. That would be incredible. I had high hopes for Destiny, I still have high hopes for Destiny. But for me, in its current form the game is dead. I want a real story to go with the mmo experience, and before people say it can’t be done, yes it can. ESO and WoW both have lots of storyline and lore. ESO is fully voice acted. What do you think dude? Do you like the idea of a massive open world, with an incredible storyline, and open ending based upon player choices?

        • I very much agree to this. The "hobby" this game is moving towards again is really just an empty time sink. I was happy they were "respecting our time" when it was possible to finish up everything in a reasonable amount of time at launch, but the people who like to treat a game like a second job wanted more grind. Video game addiction is now recognized as a mental disorder by the WHO. I'm going to put on my tin foil hat here, but Bungie has been reported as hiring a behavioral psychologist and specialists in the past. I think still do and that they cater to what triggers game addiction. For no good reason, this game can be really hard to walk away from (for me, but I doubt I'm alone).

          • Doesn't seem like the best place for feedback that the dev may need to review. Also, neglecting your child to get a game mode completed because the dev made it available isn't their fault. Glad you found a method of game playing that suits your lifestyle. As said by others, you play games that fit your lifestyle.

            • I'm right there with you. I've given up raiding, and don't touch competitive PvP. I will play a little IB or do my weekly crucible milestones but that's about it. Destiny has become a very different type of game for me after D2. So far I've come back for each DLC and played for a few weeks until I exhausted the content or just got bored with it, and moved on to other games. My life is much better for it,

            • How exactly is this Destiny 2 feedback? Maybe I missed something? As for the post itself, I sincerely don't care. Making an entire post about you quitting Endgame for personal reasons that had nothing to do with Destiny 2 itself in terms of feedback or functionality is puzzling at best. So yeah, in short, I don't care. I play for Endgame. I love the Endgame. All I care about is the Endgame. Congratulations on becoming a casual.

              • Yeah man. I was the same as you. For me it was in the WoTM raid... it got to about 12pm and I have to get up at 5-6am with kids. I’d just led my team through the puzzle and got the screen before the boss. Got to the boss and we couldn’t kill him in a few runs... I just had to go. My friends got the sova infused pulse and I never did. That was the end of my raiding life. For trials it was the frustration of being matched with people from Central Asia and having 3-5seconds lag in trials (D2). We went flawless mutliple times in D1 and now I’ve stopped. Tbh I’m not even finished the Warmind DLC yet and it’s actually challenging being massively under the recommended power. It’s jsut healthier to have balance. I hit the gym now for an hour or most evenings and I am happier and healthier. I’ll hit Destiny 2 on rest days so I might barely finish the Warmind Story before the Sept DLC comes out.

                • Did the same thing, I play it casually on PC, I play Oculus rift, BO3, and many other games. Spending your time in Destiny 2 to collect something that would be taken away just to be sold in the next installment is pretty unfathomable.

                  • You've hit on a social nightmare that is only just being recognised (and apparently scaring a lot of players). The very real realisation that a lot of people are getting addicted to gaming. They go to work, do the day job and then come back to a snack and gaming. It's unhealthy both mentally and physically and is definitely leading to a lot more issues in families. I have cut down on my gaming as a result of looking at my own playing history. By doing this I started actually enjoying my free time again. I haven't gone as far as deleting my characters or anything like that and have pre-ordered Anthem and a few other games. The result has been that I have started to be a lot more objective with things and not getting caught in the hype for things. It also allowed me to get to E3, play Gambit and realise that nothing has actually changed in D2 September. The weapons slots are back to D1 but, with a huge and quite frankly ridiculous proviso (if the final explanation from Bungie's Twitter is correct). Weapons drop for a slot so you can have multiple versions of the same gun but, one is locked to your power slot and the other to your kinetic. So you will literally need two fo each weapon if you want to have dynamic slot weapon selection. The system is ALREADY broken before release (a familiar pattern sadly).

Never ever pass up time to play with your children. This is coming from a 50 yr old father of 3 whose kids are off living their own lives now. They grow fast and I'm happy that they are fine adults, but I miss them when they were kids. No video game in the world is worth that loss. Spend more time with your kids, you will have plenty of time to game once they leave the nest. Edit: I was put to a test last night. I was outside on the patio, relaxing, getting close to calling it a day, when I get a message on my phone from my 12 yr grandson asking me if I could help him do PoE on Destiny 1. I immediately jumped on and he and I cleared it out. Fun stuff!! Wait till you get to do that with your grandchildren!!! Awesome stuff!!

                          • That's what I thought all responsible parents did. You can still play end game content but only when you have the time to do it. God,Family,Job and Bills come first. Then game time. You can't have fun gaming if all those are not put first. Gaming is for relaxation and fun.
