We are products of poor game design...

Small notion. Just like society is morphed into a product of culture change, so is a player base the product of a developer’s game design. . Example: The conversation over at Epic and around 50v 50 currently is that they are seeing behavioral changes in their player base as a whole. On a mass level. In this mode, they see more team oriented mindsets (sharing). Key point the mind is changing on larger scale. Now the focus of this post isn’t Fortnite or Epic but on behavioral patterns within a player base a whole. . The main point is this, if a game’s core design is positive at the front end, it will reinforce good behavior on the back end within the player base as a whole. Happiness or *eudaimonia*. . Cycle this back to Destiny and Destiny 2. What have we seen in her history? The player base has been littered with poor behavioral patterns, toxicity, and an elitst mentality. It is running rampant within the Destiny construct/universe. This is not the player base’s fault. The player base as a whole is a product of either, poor game design in relation to a game’s core identity structures; or great game design, in relation to identity structures. . Also in today’s games that are considered “live” and constantly updated, it is highly important to keep your game design cohesive within an identity construct OR foundation. Boundaries. . Laying boundries not only for your game but also for the player base will reign in poor player behaviors on a larger scale. This isn’t something I just realized either, just because >Fortnite. It’s something I discuss often enough irl and with others situationally here and on Reddit. Fortnite’s circumstances just happened to be in perfect timing to explain this to more than one person at a time. . Basically in layman’s terms if Bungie fixes the game in the right areas (priorities), at the right time (strategies), in the right manner in relation to a LIVING AND BREATHING player base (feedback), simultaneously joined with a clear identity (Destiny), the game or IP could recover EVENTUALLY because we are products of our environments. Positivity breeds positivity. Negativity breeds negativity. This is the case since we were born, so why would this change for people in a virtual environment?

  • You’re right on the money. However, that requires a monumental shift in Bungie’s company and corporate culture. That requires Bungie to change how they communicate with us. That requires Bungie to value ideas and innovations over nepotism and favoritism. They have to change from vague and cryptic to clear and upfront. They have to change from thinking they live in a bubble where they’re right all the time to humbling themselves to accepting there may be good ideas amongst their community. Once the mindset changes, then the game can change to where people want to play. Then that’ll change the community itself.
