Why is d1 lore better than d2 lore

I think everyone agrees that d1’s lore was better than D2’s. I just want to here peoples reasoning as to why. For me it’s because it lacks emotional depth. D2 lore doesn’t make me feel anything. Please no trolling and please be civil.

    • Probably because of the amount there is in D1 (grimoire-wise). Plus, almost every grimoire card is super in-depth.

      • D1 appealed at least to a minimum to teens. D2 was made for Luke smiths 4 year old nieces to understand. Next dlc boss is big bird confirmed.

        • The current writers can't seem to connect to D1, as it stands continuity is broken af and the comics are horrible. I honestly think they ran out of Staten's work, well most likely after the next dlc. There would be something more if they knew what the darkness was, they also -blam!-ed every npc in CoO( the greatest warlock is useless, blind fanboy, Saint-14 is -blam!-ing dead ). The folk your lore left a bad taste in the lore community too, hopefully what Barret said in a follow up tweet is what it is but who knows. Tabs and scans would've been a good addition not a replacement, we need a -blam!-ing codec ffs. Exo Stranger sure as -blam!- doesn't seem like it's played out, Mara Sov isn't just cosplay( rule 34 anyone ), and wtf is Argos exactly?

          • I have a theory that Bungie had to use most, if not all, of their lore writings that were allowed to them in D1. That left them pretty much nothing for D2 and they had to come up with it all in a few months.

            • When Joe Staten left Bungie and the reboot started the story was cut up and then cobbled together by a team of developers, ie not by experienced writers. The rest of the writing team that had worked on the story until then (with Joe) were put onto writing the lore and grimoire cards. Kinda explains why the story was a mess but the lore was very good.

            • Main reason : D1 lore was linked to things like guns, armore, places, collectibles (fragments, chests, dead ghosts, activities, etc.. AND ->>>> IT WAS TRACKED !!!! We even had a info and some progression tracking in the App. Grimoire score and tracking of items was a really great part of D1 and it is all LOST in the D2 vacuum of stupidness and bad decisions... How often did you go hunting for things with friends or help each other find/get things. The Grimoire notice on the bottom of the screen in D1 was a nice progression tracking feature !!!!!!! Checking progression on finding dead ghosts, fragments, chests, etc... even though we had to use non Bungie sites for it as a nice part of the game. This I thought WOULD have been a KEY area for Bungie to pull in and make better in D2. Instead they 100% blew the hell out of it and destroyed this part of the game !!! Now we scan stuff and that has no value. Great, who cares, next... No reason to explore, collect, read, learn, help each other, .... No sense of validation, completion, progression. Seasonal ranking of resets are stupid Not having numerical vendor tracking that persists forever is stupid And about 100 more things that killed it in D2 due to bad decisions! It is just sad for the community!

            • D1’s lore was written by people that understand their fans were teens during Halo, and have since become adults. Despite having a T rating, Destiny’s story was written with an adult understanding (before it was gutted, then subsequently ripped to shreds then reglued into the game). D2 is written explicitly for tweens and early teens, especially since they’re more susceptible to lootboxes.

            • D2 lore is just kinda pointless. D1, while we had to leave the game to do it (something that never bothered me), had deep stories that told stories, legends, histories, and theories. We heard conversations, saw from the enemies' perspectives, and got to make theories based on all the complexities within. Destiny 2 lore consists of a story, a mini story in form of DLC, side missions that almost always have no lore payoff, and random scanables which are usually worthless tidbits of info.

              1. Lack of a ‘lore place’: in d1 we had the grimoire (with the only downside you could not access it in game) where one could go and read more. Lore was accessible via internet/app without having to be in game 2. As a result, lack of connection with the lore: going back to a specific scannable for the sake of listening to it again has Lower priority than playing the game 3. Lack of depth: we miss the 3-4 ‘lore/folklores’ intertwined complicated lines developed in grimoire in detail (thorn/last word story; Oryx motivations and hive religions, Clovis bray,...)Now we have Ghaul, orphan, raised to be a successful warrior by a power craving fallen cabal and used to overthrow the emperor. That’s about it. Most of cabal lore is in the book of the limited edition, not even sure it’s in game. 4. Lack of depth 2: curse of Osiris: or how to take one of the biggest story to unfold, a hero mysterious on a quest to save us from the vex, to find out he is an old slightly senile misinformed guardian (oh wait, is the idea he’s been so busy with vex stuff he’s lost part of his mind and is confused? If that’s the case it’s poorly written and developed. And if it’s not the case it’s horribly written and developed) who somehow made it alive through all these years 5. Plotholes (or maybe just what seems to due to the lack of lore encyclopedia place) - the reef: any mention of it? What happened? Destroyed by Ghaul ?( 1 line suggests so, having one mission with us finding out about it wouldn’t have hurt. It could have been linked to a Telesto quest) - the queen and her brother never mentioned - the exo stranger: we meet Osiris, who travelled through time and don’t f... ask him about a mysterious transmitting non guardian exo who gave us a weapon with trace of time interference?!? - savathun: we fight savathun linked hive and nobody seems much worried about a new hive queen lurking around. 6. Short sighted lore: relates to all points above: lore treats mostly only of ‘story line related facts or rumors’, no preparations on future story line. Best example is: dlc Warmind: has any lore point in d2 so far hinted at warmind lore arc? I don’t think so ( but again, hard to tell with no encyclopedia). Thinking of it, I am not even sure warminds have been mentioned at all. Edit: on point 6, it has been pointed out that one adventure hints to a warmind on io. Makes things a bit better. TLDR: hard to relate to lore if hard to get a proper overview and immerse oneself in it, especially if some aspect seems poor or neglected

              • D1 was still borrowing chunks from the original writer, D2 is their actual writers working from scratch, and it sucked ASS.

                They didn’t want to pay the old writers what they deserved. The writer of the books of Sorrow is a award winning sci-fi author. The new bitch writing the comics was basically fired from her last job for mediocre work.

                  D1 is like an epic poem (about as long to read probly too). Destiny ptoo is like somebody made Saturday morning cartoons about the holocaust.

                • The new writer has aimed everything at kids and since she is s failed comic book writer she is trying to force her lack of comic writing skill of us through comics which are poorly written. Also she couldn't be bothered to read the lore in order to keep her comics in line with the current d1 lore so she made all the grimoire folklore

                  • Because D1 has lore while D2 has story, and each has what the other lacks. This couldve been easily fixed by adding the grimoire into the game and keeping dead ghosts and grimoire cards, but Bungie tend to be “fix the sink, break the microwave” people.

                  • Oh and to add on to my last reply... We have no real way to know what we don’t have... Tracking/Progression thing again... Remember vending machines that made you want to fill in the blank and complete your collection and lore items. Lore must be linked to item/activity/collectibles that are “tracked and accumulated” that gives us gradians knowledge and abilities in game. And the Speaker, the lying wiener pretending to be the voice of the Traveler, is dead... And.. I therefore can’t exchange my currencies... :)
