The Sunless Cell, a Short Story

The foolish Hunter plunged into the murky depths of darkness below, shotgun in hand. There was an audible splash as he hit the floor, a wet feeling all the way up to his ankles in this wretched pit. This dark hell reeked of rotting corpses and the stench of iron, and when our Guardian here dipped his hand into the liquid he had fell into, he came back up with a strange fluid, crimson mixed with some kind of black-green. He quickly wiped his hand on his armour, and held his shotty tight, keeping to the walls, until his shoulder hit something rather... squelchy. Our man, rather trigger-happily, backed away and shot at whatever he had nudged, the Blast showing for a brief second a series of entrails nailed to the walls of the cavern, in some strange order. Be it a simple bloody display or some Hive ritual, he was having none of it. As he backed away, he wondered what kind of depraved, disgusting monster could do this, but little did he know that he'd soon find out, backing into the very demon itself. He scrambled forwards, surprised, falling into the pool of assorted blood, but managing by a stroke of luck to turn around and blast the mystery creature behind him. As the pellets flew, the beast could be seen for a split second as the shot broke its helmet apart. It was a large Knight, but... horrifically malformed, head looking more like an Ogre's, bones of long-dead warriors worn with a sickening pride, covered in the ashes of extinguished light. It raised a large, chitinous battle axe and brought it down in a violent slam, sending the Hunter flying. Being the agile little bugger he was, he recovered mid-air. Raising his hand skywards, he felt for the light, and ripped a burning heat from the starry sky, moulding into a mighty flaming Handcannon. As he landed, he fired all three of his shots at where he last saw the abomination, but saw no impact. He cursed aloud, having wasted his entire super, not noticing in his minor fit of rage the swirling of dust around him. That was his fatal mistake. He looked up far too late, only seeing the head of the axe slamming into his helmet, piercing through and caving in his skull, his Ghost appearing. It was too late for our foolish Hunter, however, for the darkness in this Sunless Cell was far too great for even the brightest of lights, and the beast, this "Darkblade", it simply crushed the Ghost in its hand, ending the unfortunate Hunter forever.
