Last City location theory

(After some comments, my theory seems 50/50, you will understand if you read it) Greetings fellow lore people! A question that probably has plagued us all at one point: Where in the name of Saladin IS the city? I can remember that in the ol' D1 days a prominent guess was that it is located in the Andes mountains in South America (don't have evidence for this). I however want to present a different theory based on the first missions of Destiny 2. The last city is somewhere in the alps. So we all know that after Ghaul kicks us of his ship in Homecoming we flee the city by foot. We seem to walk quite some time (I think the time is mentioned in the mission, feel free to correct me). Our Guardian walks through what seems to be some mountainy places which flatten out the more we progress until Hawthorne finds us and brings us to the Farm in the EDZ. I think that the place she finds us is the the EDZ or in the outskirts of it, considering Hawthorne seems to patrol in the areas around the Farm ( this seems to be up for debate. To validate my theory, this needs to be true) Now to the theory: The farm and the part of the EDZ that we play in seems to be located in the Black Forest area of southern Germany. This is my own conclusion, trust me I'm german. But it could be Austria or Switzerland too, though it's more unlikely. Through the visible surroundings of the city we can conclude that we are in the middle of a huge mountain range. So, if we end up in southern Germany by a long foot walk through rough terrain and a short flight that combined seems to take some days, we have to look at the nearest big mountain range. This would be the alps. They are big enough to house the mountains we see around the city. It would be more obvious if we could recognize some famous mountains, but that is too much to ask. If this seems like a somewhat obvious conclusion, I apologize, but I really think you don't have to be clairvoyant to theorize what I just did. Feel free to leave your thoughts on my suggestion. If you have a better answer, tell me! I want to know the truth! -IceApfel

  • hear me out but when you watch the cutscene of the traveler awakening it shows the coast of Africa on the bottom right-hand side which could mean that it's in Denmark that's probably wrong but it's a possibility.

  • I think some of the words painted on the walls or buildings in the area near the shard have Germanic wording on them. However, some lore to do with the Chaperone and Amanda Holliday throws a spanner in the works. It says that Amanda’s mother, the owner of the shotgun that the Chaperone is based off, died trying to cross the Panama Ravine. Given that Amanda is white, it would most likely point to a North American heritage. This could either back up the previous notion that the last city is located in southern America, or can tell us it’s in North America. It is possible that Amanda’s family had moved south prior to the collapse, or even after it. It could be said that the last city is in North America, and that the cosmodrome is in the most easterly parts of Russia. However, the writing in the tower, showing what section your in, is in English, Portuguese and Chinese (I think), suggesting another place of origin. However, that would mean that the player guardian had walked over the sea, and across 3 continents in about a weeks time, if in North America, and cross two, if in the middle of mainland Asia. In conclusion, none of the facts we have actually add up and we’ll have to accept that the last city simply just exists somewhere on earth, where it’s seemingly easy to get to Europe via walking while extremely hurt in the span of a week. Side note, the Chaperone’s lore states that Nora Holliday, Amanda’s mother, was given the original Chaperone by a Guardian, presumably a Titan judging by the way they’re described, at age 10. The ‘knight’ then walks off into the desert after burying the remains of his dead Ghost. My only guess for the location of this? Mojave Desert. Okay I’m done XD

It's not in Europe. You can hear a random chatter between NPCs, one says: "I've heard there's a shard of the Traveller in Europe. How did it get there?". You wouldn't say like that or be surprised by that fact, if you're in Europe too. Also, if you watch the vanilla D2 campaign ending ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yDESisqoVk ) you will see a shot from space, with Earth and Moon visible, and you can guess where the sun is. Based on that, the Traveller should be above 65° N. These are the very north territories of North America, Europe (Scandinavia) and Russia. I think it's possible devs do not define the Last City location and just place it whereever they want to make a better picture.

  • Back in D1, my friends and I thought there was a massive lake that curved around the City behind the Traveler. Since Old Russia was all we could visit, we decided it by the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan. But that’s just an assumption.

It could be in Northern Canada near the Yukon or in Alaska USA because those regions are very close to Russia. The Last City might even be located in British Columbia

      • in one of the adventures in the edz where your securing supplies hawthorne has a line where she says "dropped everything and flew across the ocean to help" so its probably on the western hemisphere, i think its somewhere near the rocky mountains, im guessing either British Columbia or Washington

So far we have 2 main borders to judge where the city is: The possible locations of the EDZ and the Cosmodrome, the Last City at the very least should be somewhere between these two locations. The language used in the EDZ is German, this is taken from the translations (Salzwerk = Salt Factory/Plant) and a passing comment from Master Rahool:
"You wouldn't happen to speak pre-golden age german would you?"
This at least puts the EDZ in the vicinity of the primary German speaking countries, such as Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (as mentioned in the main post). All of which are connected via the Alps. The Cosmodrome gets a little bit tricky since there isn't much to go by except for the primary language used within the walls (Russian), the place of inspiration (the Aral Sea) and the locations laid out in the Grimoire cards, detailing 'raids' and logs taken near the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea. This puts the Cosmodrome to the North, West, or East of the Caspian Sea, in either modern day Russia or Kazakhstan, respectively. With these two borders in mind, it is entirely possible, if not certain, for the Last City to be located within Europe. It's just a matter of narrowing it down. Edit: I retract my statement about the location of the Last City, the locations of the Cosmodrome and the EDZ is all that I have found evidence for, saying the Last City is between these two locations skips over the use of ships that can take Guardians anywhere. • It’s in Russia. Or near the Russian Border. In Destiny 1, twilight gap is in Russia if I am correct and the city is viewable from the twilight gap. Also there was a mission either w/ Khovostov or Gjallahorn where we went to a crucible map that was in Cosmodrome and the Traveler could be seen.

              • Doesn't make any sense because Hawthorne flew across the ocean to help us The last city is on south america most likely, although the snowy mountains that are close to the tower might say otherwise. It's either really deep in south america, or somewhere in Canada.

                    • It's somewhere in the Americas. When Hawthorne found us she said she flew across the ocean as fast as she could. We know the farm is in the EDZ so by that reasoning we can assume where in either north or south America

                      • Two things I'd like to point out: 1. In a grimoird card for D1 it says that after the battle of Six Fronts, Radegast led a host of guardians and "pushed back the fallen to the Caspian Sea". So the city has to be somewhere relatively near the Caspian sea. 2. Has anyone looked at the signs in the EDZ and figured out what language they are? If we figure that out we can get a general idea of the area the EDZ is in.

                            • They're not the Alps. Hawthorne tells us that we are going a long way from where she found us. The other predominant theory was that the Last City was in Nepal.

                            • Hawthorne says in campaign that she "flew across the ocean" from EDZ to get to last city to help evacuate. Its mission where u secure the supplies she had to leave behind when cabal attacked city. If that helps.

                              • Because we hop in a ship to go to the farm, its possible for the city to be anywhere. The best evidence I ever saw was a cinematic bungie added during late D1 around Age of Triumphs. It showed a shot of earth with a series of lines of light shooting up from a spot in northern India in the Himalayas, which the D1 tower scenery really matched well. I would agree, the D2 opening doesn't seem to fit that. But people said the same thing in D1 trying to pin the City by the cosmodrome, and now the EDZ. That said, as i mentioned, we have to take a ship to get to the EDZ/cosmodrome so it could really be anywhere.
