Help! I have a weird problem

Heh So I'm studying at university at the age of 17; the thing is that all the people here my age usually have issue with getting ENOUGH words for the word counts (for assignments), but my problem is that I always have TOO MUCH words.... I'm always going over the max word limit by about 300-500 words (once I was 1000 words over!!) Is this normal? Well, I mean it clearly isn't but... Am I weird because of this? • First of all, you are not weird and it is perfectly normal to have more words than assignments ask. In many cases it is good to have more and than just trim it to fit specific requirements. Maybe it is a well known/studied topic, or something that you feel passionate about, I mean there are plenty of reasons. Try reading you work a few times, trim the fat leave the facts and support details. Check the outline and how you organized your written work. You could try using dictionary or thesaurus. I understand the frustration when you have to express your opinion with a limited number of words but do not worry you will get used to it and with some practice it will get easier.

    • Seeking attention isn't weird, it's just annoying. A lot of people have trouble with writing. Some go too far under, some too far order. You just need to consolidate your points and rid of the filler.

      >word limits Ahhh I don’t miss English class. The only thing I have to write now is lab reports, and the length of them is suppose to be “not too short, not too long.” So what does that mean? Well, in theory, it’s what a word limit is suppose to do. The purpose of a word limit being there is to let you know that your professor believes their assignment can be done proficiently in that length of writing, or that the assignment in particular is best answered in that length of writing. What does that mean? That means that with coherent organization, you should be able to communicate everything you need to in that span. That also means that by going under this, you are either overly compacting your articulation, or by going over you are overly expressing it. So, if I had any advice to you, check out your organization, your diction, and your sentence structure. If you have one statement to make, make it in one sentence. For god sakes don’t romanticize anything, be direct and concise. Unnecessary words that make your sentence look pretty are, in fact, ugly and distracting. Case in point I rewrite the last sentence of the previous paragraph; Unnecessary words are ugly and distracting. The “that make your sentence look pretty” is something that falls under the domain of “Unnecessary,” thus it can be removed. The fact that you’re going over by that much tells me you’re spending too much time trying to wow the audience with your articulation, and not enough time articulating.

    • Probably going on too many tangents, cut out all the weaker bits and remember that the reader is probably smarter than you when you're explaining stuff

    • I'm always the same. Maximum word counts are so low because most people struggle to write long pieces. However, for someone like you obviously that isn't the case. First of all, check with your teacher to see if [however many words] is okay, despite being over the limit. Sometimes I've been allowed an extra 200 words when the word count is about 1000 words. This may vary depending on the word count, but you get the idea. If you're not allowed any extra words, look again at your essay. Are there any sentences that are longer than they need to be? Cut out adverbs, or extra adjectives. Do you need that specific comparison? Does it need to be so detailed? Things like that. If you're still struggling, you can always just ask your teacher (or a classmate, or a family member) which sections they think you can get away with cutting. It's a good thing that you're over the limit though. Don't stop writing because you're over the limit, instead finish the essay as detailed as you can make it, then look at how detailed you need to make it, i.e. what you will cut.

        • Nah, I do the same thing when I write, you need to work on consolidating ideas and cutting out redundant or unnecessary words

          • First of all, no that's not weird. I write the same way. Second, what kind of university has classes with papers that have word limits?

            • Your possible issue could adding what I'd call "fluff". Sure elaborating on a sentence or two to a thought is nice and sometimes necessary but the vast majority of the time it would be better to just keep the paper on the central idea rather than deviating from it to a similar topic. Another possible issue could be attempting to be more descriptive when only a brief summary or description may be all that is required. TL;DR: Write what you need, not what you don't.
