The fact that you had to level up in between missions perfectly demonstrates how lacking and pathetic the campaign was.

Such an awful story. After 3 years of experience and time to write a script with an enjoyable and unique story, we got this rubbish. I could go on for hours about why this campaign is factually mediocre at its utmost best, but there is one thing that annoys me in particular. There are two points within the campaign that you have to just level up with world activities and stuff before you can progress through the story. This is actually a good explanation for why strikes were so lazy and weren't integrated into the campaign as well, because frankly Bungie didn't care. Rather than give us a campaign which was good enough and long enough to let the player have an enjoyable journey to level 20, they opted to make it far too short. Then, to fill in the gaps, they just level-locked missions so that you would take more time to finish the campaign, drawing away from the fact that the story is so ruddy short. It also means that the player would be lv20 or so by the time the campaign finished, because what's the point in making more missions when you've done the bare minimum?

 • Sounds like you did not do the Adventures. Adventures are extensions to the story that are option to skip. If you do them during the story your gear will scale and you’ll be leveled at the correct amount per zone. Additionally if you did the double XP bonus you can skip adventures and play through the story at the correct level as well.
