Please read. "Lost Sectors" missed oppourtunity

Bungie had a bunch of missed opportunities with D2. First, I'd like to point out lost sectors. Well, I guess I can't really call them lost sectors since their marked on my map, it appears they're not really lost. Rather than having 5-25 "lost" sectors per map, depending on planet and size, each planet should have had 4-6 LOST sectors. These lost sectors should have been very well hidden, almost to the point where some you just have to happen upon. These lost sectors would grant, by RNG, the possibility of gear. Let me talk about the gear quick. Since each planet has an enemy race that is more prevalent, each planet would have a full set of gear for each class (Titan, Warlock, and Hunter). The pieces of the gear sets would only be obtainable from the chests at the end of the the lost sectors, based off RNG. Sometimes you'd get tokens, but there is a chance for the race specific loot. So this would give credibility as to why there's a swarm of enemies guarding a chest. I mean, let's be honest, I don't think the enemy would be guarding chests of tokens which have absolutely no worth to them. I mean, unless the fallen are gonna go hit up Devrim for a shiny piece of green gear. But, I doubt it. Now, since the amount of lost sectors have been reduced by about 50-70%, we can add some substance to these sectors. Give them story, why are they there? How did they form? Give them mechanics to get to the end of the lost sector. When they were first introduced, they were made to sound like they were gonna be some great feat. But, the truth was discovered in the first week of D2. Run past all the adds then pump the the yellow bar full of power ammo. What should have been epic adventures ended up being patrols inside caves with no story or reason for why we're raiding them. Now back to the design, like I said, give them mechanics, multiple areas of the sectors, maybe keys we need to discover to unlocks doors to even proceed further. Make the boss an actual boss, it doesn't need to be anything crazy but it should make the fight feel fun, not like a chore for a mediocre reward. And finally, each enemy race should have a race specific weapon which would be obtainable through a separate quest. This quest would be obtainable from these chests by way of RNG. By way of doing Lost Sectors this way, would have added a lot more replay-ability. Btw, I thought of this idea in about 10 minutes, your move Bungie. P.S. Thought of this after typing everything. Each planet should have a planet specific shader which would also drop from the lost sector chests. TL:DR Lost sectors were a fail. Should have been like mini strikes. Should have enemy race specific gear sets for each class and one weapon per enemy race, obtainable by the chests in the lost sectors. I have a lot more ideas for other things I think they could have implemented very well but they came out feeling rushed. Next up, I will be writing my opinion on how the Flashpoints should have been set up. Edit: Yes, I know proper writing format was thrown to the wolves here. I'm a full time college student and sometimes it nice to break away from the "this is how you have to do it" style. Think of yourself as my professor, you're looking at my brainstorming 😘

Missed opportunity is the phrase that perfectly encapsulates D1 and so far D2 as a whole.

  • Thanks for posting the feedback. We've enjoyed reading all of the communities ideas on how they would like to see things change in the future. Lost Sectors, in particular, has stoked the creativity of the community to come up with interesting ideas.

    • The name "lost sector" implies mystery or the recovery of something. I would have liked to see a supplementary reward that was related to the lore in some way, or hinted at a larger overarching quest. Maybe looting every lost sector on the map could have triggered a hidden cutscenes, or unlocked a hidden quest that would yield high level, zone specific loot when completed. Right now, lost sectors lose their thrill after you've done a couple, and they lose their utility once you reach a certain power threshold. Maybe in the future Bungie can attempt to make lost sectors live up to the hype.

Agree. I also posted about this before that they really are pointless additions and they missed a huge opportunity with LS. Lost Sectors: -Should have been hard to find like Halo Skulls. -Should only be a solo activity with different difficulties available. Like replaying story missions in D1. -Should be very rare specific enemy or planet gear not just re-paints of current gear (like faction garbage) and each LS should have different gear with at least 2-3 variants of each. It would be awesome when you happen to find a wicked piece of gear in a well hidden cave on a planet! One step further could be that the LS is only open during random times, so it would make it even more rare to have the gear. -Should be a long quest like solo dungeons or Maelstrom Arena in Elder Scrolls Online or a mini raid with multiple bosses inside and each one gets more difficult. Award a cache for each boss defeat and a final award for event completion. They could actually learn a lot from ESO! Imagine if Destiny was a true open world like ESO? -Should be a new enemy that has a small presence on each planet and at each LS we discover more about them and their plans. Maybe setup future DLC or D3?
Well, I guess I can't really call them lost sectors since their marked on my map
LOL true. But I would like a custom waypoint marker. Because although one can see the Lost Sector symbol on the map which shows it's location relative to ones current position it still takes time to find it, or anything else at times. For example, 'I need to travel northeast some distance, search, travel some more, search again and eventually find it. Not terribly difficult but a little time consuming. It would be a nice 'quality of life improvement' if one could place a marker anywhere they wanted which would then display a bearing to that point regardless of ones current position. Note: The current green arrow indicating ones position isn't precise enough, nor can it be placed where one wants to go. In D2 it's not as though one is trying to navigate in a sandstorm* where the only known direction is up but Guardians should have better tech than simply 'It's kind of that way, a little ways'. *After the GPS battery died from the heat, The spare has a hole in it and you're left with the map and compass you didn't bring to save space and weight (yeah, that's stupid).

          • Lost Sectors, Regional Chests, and Cayde's Loot Chests should have all been off the map, imo. To me if the reward is presented to me with little effort on my part, doing all this stuff feels largely redundant. I'm having a great time playing with all my friends for sure. These are just the simple things that could've been that much better, for me, by simply keeping them off the map. Size of the Sectors don't bother me so much, but maybe a little bit of lore and a trinket to turn in to someone of importance that would open a conversation with a little bit more lore. Then by the time you finish all the Sectors you had to find while exploring a nice piece of loot in return.

          • They might as well just leave them on the map. It is impossible to hide anything well in a game like this. Just look at the "hidden" chests in the D1 raids. One person finds the lost sector, and then everyone in the community knows where it is. I think a better idea than hiding them is to make another step to get into them, like getting some form of key you can only get at certain times or by doing an event etc.

            • I like the idea of having a race specific weapon quest drop from a lost sector chest - no guarantee, just the possibility. Would add at least a little of that "white whale" chase that seems so lacking in D2

            • The only thing I really think the game needs is an indicator on the map for your fireteam members. We have a map finally, and it shows us where we are, but not even the faintest indicator of where our fireteam members are. What the hell. Lol

              • I think it would be pretty cool if finding lost sectors required some type of buff that could be picked up from a public event or something. A buff that would reveal an entrance to a Lost Sector.

                  • I agree with this. After playing for a while I'm noticing how awesome the worlds are, yet there is not nearly enough of a reason to be on each planet. The story only quickly touches on each area. Then you go back for a few public events each week. Which honestly is already getting old. Hopefully they add more end game content to the planets later.

                  • I was thinking lost sectors should either A. Scale to your light level or B. Have 2 options. You have your easy to find lost sectors, kinda out in the open, boss is easy to kill with minimal loot. Then you have your hidden sectors. The ones where you need to squint really hard to spot a tiny hole in the ceiling of a cabal ship, and inside is a massive boss thats super difficult to kill, possible modifiers and yields great rewards. That way you have your easy to find, shoot and loot sectors for casuals just chilling on patrol, and an incentive for the more adventurous people to go out and search every corner of these beautifully designed worlds.

                  • Yea they could of only had 2 unmarked lost sectors a week per planet, with their own modifiers, like mini nightfalls. Then at reset change locations. Like you said they already have 15 to 20 lost sectors on EDZ and Nessus and maybe 10 on titan and io. This would of prolonged the replay ability along with your loot idea.

                    • Agreed. I feel lost sectors are a missed opportunity. From the prerelease hype, I expected them to be harder to find (not an icon on my map) and definitely fuller, more challenging, and worthwhile. I don't think the planet specific loot would work in principle because weapons with power types to handle any enemy are literally handed to you everywhere, but using lost sectors to add to the planet's narrative would be cool. Just look at the post- raid area
where racks of emperor robots hang in wait.
A sly narrative bombshell.
