Rank the Star Wars movies.

Do it. 1 is best, 8 is worst. 8. Attack of the Clones 7. The Force Awakens 6. The Phantom Menace 5. Rogue One 4. Return of the Jedi 3. Revenge of the Sith 2. A New Hope 1. The Empire Strikes Back The only truly bad Star Wars movie is Attack of the Clones. Terrible writing, janky editing, boring plot with no resolution. Re-watching this movie is a slog. The Force Awakens is a fun mindless popcorn movie with good performances and snappy dialogue, but it has absolutely no substance and no emotional resonance. The film is extremely derivative to the point of copying A New Hope's basic plot structure, and it's just not very engaging. We've seen it all before & it was better the first time. The Phantom Menace is not as bad as most people say it is. It's not a good movie, but it's not terrible either. It's just kind of okay. It does what it needs to do and does it with style, but it's pretty thin on substance and it misses a lot of golden opportunities story-wise. Jar Jar is pretty bad, but he grows on you upon repeat viewings. Rogue One is a good movie. It's got action, tension, character arcs, good acting, a tight (if somewhat dry) script, and an interesting story. It's not a GREAT movie... but it is GOOD. Some of you might be surprised to see Return of the Jedi at #4, but in spite of the fact that it is a well-made movie and a fitting conclusion to the original trilogy, the decision to mash up the fun atmosphere of ANH with the mature themes of TESB can create tonal dissonance at key points in the movie, especially during the climax with the infamous Ewok battle. Most of the emotional resonance relies upon the events of the previous two films & the movie does not offer much in that department on its own, apart from the excellent Luke/Vader redemption plot. The intro at Jabba's Palace feels like it belongs in a completely different movie & Harrison Ford clearly doesn't want to be there. It's very good, but not great. Revenge of the Sith is also very good, but it has an edge on Return of the Jedi in two key areas: a consistent tone & a powerful climax. Like ROTJ, the first act of the movie feels like it doesn't really belong here, but it does play a role in highlighting the transition of Anakin from good-hearted Jedi warrior to self-serving Sith slave. ROTS repeats many of the sins of the previous prequel films (wooden dialogue, out-of-place slapstick, underdeveloped villains), but the central arc of Anakin's fall to the dark side is so strong that it holds the whole thing up. They say you can never beat the original, and A New Hope comes very close to being #1. It's the first of the two truly great Star Wars movies. Encapsulating the rip-roaring adventure tone of a 1930s Flash Gordon serial, A New Hope tells a simple story, but tells it to perfection. A diverse cast of characters, each brimming with personality, brings the story to life. Well-written dialogue holds it up, and each main character (apart from Leia) experiences an arc of their own, making for a very dynamic story. The climax is the cherry on top & still goes down as the best ending of the Star Wars movies in my book. The Empire Strikes Back is not only a great film, but one of THE great films. There isn't much I can say about this thing that hasn't been said a million times before. Great acting, a tight script with the best dialogue of the series, one of the great love stories in cinema history, more character development building on what A New Hope introduced, and of course - the twist to end all twists. A true classic.
