It is quite obvious how devastating the Cabal raid on the Last City is. Mostly likely enormous loss of civilian life and property damage not to mention possible destruction of key research and manufacturing facilities. Don't want any insurrectionists having access to weapon foundries.
Something that I am surprised to not see mentioned however is the idea of how this sudden loss of Light when the Traveler was caged impacted any active Guardians in the wilds of Earth and beyond.
Destiny 2 takes place a year after the events in the Plaguelands from the Rise of Iron dlc, so there were no known raids or strikes going on but it is not impossible to think that there were still Guardians actively patrolling regions and participating in small-scale skirmishes. Crucible is also a fairly active event with live weapons.
Can you imagine how many Guardians were legitimately killed just from being incapacitated at the wrong moment? It's not really made clear but going by the in-universe lore there are not that many actual Guardians, only a few thousand. I'm sure that number took a major hit with the events of Destiny 2.
