D:LU Ch16 Pt2, Reunion

Chapter Sixteen: Reunion Part Two How do we break 'em?" Drew punched his palm. "Destroy the juice box, and you destroy the Vex," I answered, "Any more questions?" Drew and Trixie raised their hands. "Yes, Trixie?" I sighed. "What are we doing here illyWay?" Trixie asked, giggling a little at my pig Latin name. "IllyWay…" Drew pondered, "Illy…Way…oh! 'Willy' with 'ay'! Hah, I'm twolingual!" "Bilingual," I corrected, wishing I didn't understand the pathetic and fake old language. "No, two languages Will, I can't understand a word of what shop owners say when they want me to buy stuff," Drew lectured. "You can't understand a word of what anyone says," Sierra growled. "We're here to scout," I decided to change the subject by answering Trixie's question, "We don't know what's going on in this area, except that their are both Vex and Fallen, and I need to take a look at the Vex Citadel." "Oolcay," Drew responded, then winked at Trixie. "What was your question, Drew?" I ignored his surprisingly successful attempt at pig Latin. "Oh, right," Drew pondered for a moment, trying to recall his question, "How do Exos eat?" Trixie perked up and looked to me, clearly wanting to know the answer as well. "How is that even relevant to-?" Veronica began questioning him. "Just answer," Sierra interrupted, "It'll be over quicker that way." "Okay," I groaned, "We don't know how Exos eat, because no one understands how Exos were built anymore. We just know that you can eat and have the sensory equipment to taste." "Sweet," Drew nodded. "Anyway, we'll be going down that path to the left," I pointed to the trail that stretched through this rocky area and past the transmat zone, "That's the direction the Citadel is in, and it's also the direction I did not go on my first trip, so we're going in blind aside from the approximated geological locations, like the Citadel and the Cinders. After scouting those areas, we can see about investigating the remains of the Ishtar Collective or other areas in the Ishtar Sink if anyone is interested." "So its true that the Collective still stands?" Veronica asked, reminding me that she was a Warlock and actually did have interests in knowledge. "Yes," I confirmed, "Well, at least mostly. As would be expected, there's damage, nonoperational systems, and Fallen looting, but there seems to be a promising amount of research to be done once Venus is truly clear for patrol. And that's why the Vanguard sent us here rather than anyone else: we need to recover more knowledge on the Vex before we can determine it's safe to send Guardians again, and I'm one of the only two people who's been here recently." "Two?" Crag asked, surprising all of us by calling attention to his presence. "Yes, two. Guardian was here last time I was, and I believe he's actually here now, although he has a huge head start," I explained. "Guardian?" Veronica scoffed, "You mean that stiff that everyone's been gawking about? The one that never talks but reopened our beachhead on the Moon?" "Yes," Sierra grumbled, "Everyone has collectively decided that his name is Guardian." "He's here?" Crag dragged us back on subject. "He's off down the path to the right," I nodded towards the other end of the trail, "He's been all over that end getting Golden Age and Guardian info on the Vex. We're exploring the only areas in the old patrol zone he hasn't been to." "He's doing this for the Vanguard, too?" Veronica checked. "Well…no. He's looking for a Vex Gate Lord for the Awoken, but his Ghost always shares all the information they find with the Vanguard, so it's beneficial to everyone." "Gate Lord?" Drew and Trixie repeated in sync, clearly interested. "I have no idea what it is," I confessed. "And what exactly did the Awoken ask you to get?" Veronica inquired. "Yeah," Sierra put her hands on her hips, "What do they want?" I looked back and forth between the two of them for a moment before deciding they should know, "A Vex from the Citadel and a Winter Captain, both alive." "How the hell are you going to pull that off?!" Sierra exclaimed. Veronica was clearly thinking the same thing, while Drew and Trixie seemed lost, probably at the thought of not killing my targets. Crag was unreadable. "I'll think of something, for now we need to stick to finding out what exactly we'll be up against," I replied. "Let's go before I decide I want to shoot one of the buffoons," Sierra ordered. "Agreed," Crag hefted his sniper rifle to make it clear he was also ready to shoot. "Oh, looks like Crabby is back," Trixie giggled and poked Crag's chest, earning her an angry grunt. "This is gonna be a long day," Sierra muttered. • • • The Cinders that spread through the Ishtar Sink quickly overtook everything down our path. The walls of stone hadn't dropped away like they had on the way to the Collective, but instead actually created the entire layout of this area, enclosing spaces to move around in within their walls and hiding vast networks of tunnels. Cracks ran through the rocky ground and walls, some opening wide enough to expose blue ore and release gas from the depths of the planet. For a volcanic field possibly gearing up to erupt, it sure seemed peaceful. At least it wasn't like all the volcanoes you could see in the distance, pumping out poisonous air and searing rivers of the melted blue ore. The most intriguing part of the landscape was the massive Vex structure that peaked out from above the cliff faces from some distance away, its top touching the clouds. I could only assume that was the Citadel. Rush had hooked the others up to the Sparrow link system, but we weren't on them long before we saw movement and dismounted. Now we were prone at the top of an outcropping of rocks in the Ember Caves that we had cleared just moments before. The Ember Caves were a section of the Cinders known for exactly what their name suggests: cave systems. Drew had just finished dragging the Vandal bodies out of sight and joined us on the ridge. It wasn't the most encouraging view, but it gave me some confidence that my task could be done. Fallen were crawling all over the place, hanging around the caves and standing in posts around all the strategic points that allowed approach to the underground network. There was a slope leading up to a short cliff that the Fallen had built a large platform spanning across, giving them a bird's eye view over the area. Vandals with Wire Rifles lined the ridge, and the crew that patrolled the rest of this area was fairly large. Vandals, Dregs, and Shanks alike made up the force and were watched over by a Captain that stood atop the high platform. "Well, at least we know the Ember Caves are Winter territory now," Veronica sighed. "We can move on," I nodded, "We'll want to get the Captain after the Vex, and lying low for now would be better to keep the Fallen unaware." "They know there are Guardians back on Venus anyway," Veronica pointed out, then gestured towards Drew and Trixie, "And the kids want to play." "Oh I love games!" Trixie squealed quietly. "I wanna play with those punching bags over there," Drew chuckled at his own joke. "Alright, but if they commit serious reinforcements we're leaving, we can't risk that right now," I surrendered. _____________________________ Link to Pt1: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/230677045/0/0 Link to Pt3: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/230677560/0/0 Link to ToC: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/212710816/0/0
