The Echo Saga || "Errands" #4 || Nightmare

ERRANDS About 30 minutes later,  Echo and Caesar were walking through the rock field, when they suddenly noticed an enormous Cabal Cruiser coming down from the dark sky. It appeared that Vex Minotaurs from the Prohibition had taken over the bridge, and were planning to crash it into the planet surface. "This is the craziest night I've ever experienced", Caesar sighed. "And I've had some mad ones, thanks to Mr. Suicide here!" Echo was about to say something, but then he finally reached the summit of the hill, and the battle that was happening on the other side was now visible for the two. Vex and Cabal units were fighting over an apocalyptic battlefield, projectiles from Slap Rifles and slugs from the Cabal weapons flying everywhere. It was clear that the Cabal were losing, as more and more Cabal Legionaries started to fall, whilst for every destroyed Vex unit two new ones were warped in. In the back, a large base could be seen, burning in the night. "Firebase Chora", Caesar unnecesarily said. "We're lucky, it's mostly intact" "Heh, 'mostly'. At the moment, I'm more concerned with getting past that battle over there. It seems pretty impossible to get through that crossfire" Caesar started scanning several parts of the battlefield. "You should probably descend first, and try to hide in the outskirts of the battle" Echo zig-zagged down the hill, ran to a burning Interceptor and hid behind it. He was heavy breathing now, as a result of the tiring descent. "Okay... What do we do now? How do I get through this hell?" Caesar materialized next to him and started talking. Echo couldn't understand his incomprehensable orders, because of the ongoing battle about a hundred meters further. He gestured his hand upwards, to make Caesar talk louder. Luckily, Caesar understood what Echo meant, and almost started shouting. "You'll need to follow my -BOOM- exact orders! I'll show you the way -KABOOM- on your HUD! Just watch yourself out there!" Despite the the loud explosions, Echo could understand what Caesar was saying. A small path appeared on his HUD, and after checking his sides, he sprinted towards his next cover, a smoking Harvester. Echo then fell on his stomach and crawled towards the next point, marked on his HUD, which was an exploded Goliath Tank, stuck in the sand. As he was crawling, the crossfire continued over his head. It was hard for him to find his way through the wreckage and It didn't help either that the only light on the battlefield came from the countless explosions and projectiles. Finally, after what felt like a century, he reached the Goliath Tank and got underneath it. Echo let out a relieved sigh and Caesar appeared about a meter from Echo. "I've got bad news", Caesar reported. "There are no reliable pieces of cover left. You'll have to cross at least 100 meters before you'll get to the main entrance of Firebase Chora. I'm sorry, Echo. I'll try to find something" And gone was Caesar. Frustrated, Echo punched the ground, but quickly came to his senses and started to look around for a solution. Then he saw a line of Phalanx Legionaries forming a shield wall, in a desperate effort to keep their base safe. Surprisingly, they succeeded and slowly started pushing towards the Vex, followed by heavier units like Colossi, who were harassing the enemy with their gatling-like Heavy Slug Rifles. He got an idea and summoned Caesar. As soon as the Ghost appeared, Echo started explaining his plan. "You see that shield wall over there? I'm pretty confident that they'll be able to push past this point. I'll be able to pass the Colossi if I stay in the shadows, their vision isn't that good" They both observed the Phalanxes, slowly marching forward, while a heavy Cabal war drum could be heard, echoing over the battlefield. Hunderds of Slap Rifle projectiles got reflected by the heavy Cabal shields. "How are their shields not broken yet? Those guys are near invincible!", Caesar wondered. As they had to wait until the line passed, Echo started lecturing. "Unless you get behind them. The Phalanx Shields are made of multiple layers of heavy steel and are famous for their sturdiness, but special troops need to be trained to wield them, as they are very heavy. Furthermore-" Echo got interrupted by an especially big explosion and sand rained down on both. Meanwhile, the Cabal line, followed by the deafening war drum, kept advancing at a steady pace and were getting closer to Echo's position. After a few minutes, the Cabal passed the Goliath Tank where Echo was hidden. "Hurry", Caesar whispered. "You won't get another chance!" Echo chuckled. "Do you really think you have to tell that to me?" As a Colossus launched a rocket barrage towards the Vex, Echo slipped out from under the tank and sprinted towards the (relatively speaking) safety of Firebase Chora. After what felt like an eternity, he finally arrived at the entrance, but instead of entering the base via the main gate, he started climbing the wall. It didn't take too long for the well-trained Guardian to reach the top of the wall, and after he had unholstered his weapon, he silently advanced, into the dark night.
