Are "Exception" exotics dead?

Some exotics in Destiny are exotic because they make themselves exceptions by defying convention. Things like No Land Beyond and Universal Remote that primary exotic ability is being able to he equipped as primaries. In Destiny 2 because of the change to the weapon loadout these type of exotics seem pointless. In Destiny 2 your Kinetic weapon and your Energy weapon can be the same class. You can even carry two Sidearms (which seems really weird to me). Since any weapon that can be kinetic can also be energy there is no point in an exception as it's already they rule. That just leaves power weapons. However power weapons are meant to be significantly stronger weapons controlled by limited ammo to use them. Having a "normal" gun in your power slot seems unnecessary and having a power weapon in your "normal" slots means it would have to be totally neutered in order to maintain the relevance of power weapons. So does that mean exotics that get to go in the wrong weapon slot have been completely fazed out of relevance? Or do you think they'll stick around?
