So this isn't about current events specifically, more of just a fun discussion topic. It could apply to a litany of situations.
So over the past few years talk of further space exploration has been on lots of lips.
Several countries are setting eyes on more missions to the moon, we have private industry joining the space race, plans for mars, including colonies of humans. Capturing meteors that would completely wreck the global mining economy, the question of planetary defense from asteroid impact, and on into the more lofty ideas. All of these are exciting and interesting projects for the future of humanity culturally, economically, and scientifically.
So what about militarily? That's a lot of interests that could possibly conflict at some point or another. Well in 1967 what is commonly called the space treaty went into affect. Basically what it does is establish some basic legal framework for international space law. (Space lawyer future job? Lol) The big key points are:
•states party to the treaty agree to not place weapons of mass destruction in orbit of Earth, on the Moon or any other celestial body, or otherwise stationing them in outer space.
• It exclusively limits the use of the Moon and other celestial bodies to peaceful purposes and expressly prohibits their use for testing weapons of any kind, conducting military maneuvers, or establishing military bases, installations, and fortifications
• The exploration of outer space shall be done to benefit all countries and that space shall be free for exploration and use by all the States.
However, the Treaty does not prohibit the placement of conventional weapons in orbit and thus some highly destructive attack strategies such as kinetic bombardment are still potentially allowable.
Every country with a space program is part of the treaty, in fact most of the world is.
Space definitely has a lot of economic potential, and the presupposition that all activities in space are done with peace and the benefit of all in mind can do wonders for the geopolitical climate.
Tldr, a forward outlook with space at the core of the next stage of our civilization can and will do wonders for us all, provided we don't let our little bubbles we live in blind us to the possibilities off the future in favor of fighting amongst ourselves.

Space exploration is probably the most important thing for humanity right now. It's a shame we use our budget to train people to kill people and make things to kill people
-
The reality is that space travel being a viable option for interstellar colonization is so far off it may actually be the case that we invent viable teleporters for space travel faster than inventing space ships capable of taking us where we need to go. Also it would be the slow death of Earth since it'd be shipping resources off-planet instead of keeping resource usage contained to our system.

What is space? I've never been there so I'm partly convinced it's just something somebody made up.
-
And maybe humanity should just stay here and die
-
I just want aliens to push the reboot button on our civilization, preferably the Reapers.
-
Well Saturn's great moon Titan has more oil than all of Earth and then some. So I think it would be really interesting to see Earth's resources boosted by mass oil imports from Titan in the future. Just a thought.

On the topic of space have you heard Neil Degrasse Tyson's 2% theory?
-
Space. The final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship enterprise.

The future of humanity lies in the pursuit of space exploration. We are in a prison planet controlled by very selfish people, who will keep us in the loop just for the sake of control over the planet, only they get to live rich and fulfilling lives at the expense of humanity and our great potential.
-
What if we need to establish a defense system on the moon to protect us from aliens, though?

Edited by BlackMormon: 5/23/2017 9:02:05 PMPlanetary defense from asteroid strike is badly needed. But in terms of warships thats kind of silly. Any space faring race that came here with intent to kill us, well, lopsided is an understatement. It be like NATO declaring war on a preschool class.

We should be on Mars already. NASA are incompetent because they spend money on useless shit like diversity hiring/training.

Eeeeeew politics. Even future politics and economy bore me. I wanna know the science of the future! I wanna see the world when we advance. My dream job is to become an astrophysicist so I can learn how the universe works and so hopefully I can make some discovery from out in the stars that can somehow be translated into some technological advancement here on earth- better energy methods, artificial gravity, etc. Artificial gravity seems like a huge struggle to make, maybe even impossible. Which makes it all the more fun to think about! I really don't care much for politics or human rules, I want the rules of the universe and I want technology from those rules

Your mom takes up space

Space exploration allows clean energy sources to be developed without using climate change as a reason, getting more funding and appealing to more people.
-
They're called "Typhon"
-
I honestly believe our best hope for world peace, and possible unification, is through space exploration
-
I hope aliens look exactly like sonic.
-
I personally hope to see at least one planet/moon colonised before I die.

Edited by Pheint3d: 5/22/2017 3:19:33 PMAwesome thread. I gotta be honest though. A big chunk of us wouldn't be so naive to believe that there aren't, or wouldn't be hidden agendas in space. For sure if there is economical gains to be made....well...who are we kidding? All life would be affected, but all life will most definitely not benefit from that. The chance of negative courses being taken at a high percentage chance exist... Who are we kidding? This is the human race we're talking about.
