2 Year Old Thread on Microtransactions
For those new to internet forums, you can look at the date a thread was posted. This was posted May 31 2013.
I like to read. So every few months I hop on down to Bungie.net to read some odd things, like old posts, threads in old groups... and oh I dunno... the Terms of Use for the website. So I'm reading it and what do I find?
You may have the opportunity to use virtual, in-game or in-app currency ("Virtual Currency") or license a variety of virtual, in-game or in-app items ("Virtual Items") that can be used through the Bungie Mobile App or Bungie games. You may be required to pay a fee to obtain Virtual Items or Virtual Currency. You have no property interest in any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items. Any purchases of Virtual Currency or Virtual Items (whether through actual monetary transactions or accumulation through membership benefits or gameplay) are purchases of a limited, non-transferable, revocable license to use such Virtual Items or Virtual Currency within the applicable Bungie Mobile App or Bungie game. Virtual Currency and Virtual Items may not be transferred or resold for commercial gain in any manner, including, without limitation, by means of any direct sale or auction service. Virtual Currency and Virtual Items have no monetary value, and cannot be used to use products or services other than within the applicable Bungie Mobile App or Bungie game. Virtual Currency and Virtual Items cannot be refunded or exchanged for cash or any other tangible value. If you do not redeem your Virtual Currency or Virtual Items, so long as your Bungie account remains active and in good standing, you will be offered an opportunity to convert any unused Virtual Currency or Virtual Items into one or more in-game or other options determined by Bungie in its sole discretion. All Virtual Currency and Virtual Items are unconditionally forfeited if your Bungie account is terminated or suspended for any reason, in Bungie’s sole discretion, or if Bungie discontinues any Virtual Currency or Virtual Item program. Bungie has no liability for hacking or loss of your Virtual Currency or Virtual Items. Bungie has no obligation to, and will not, reimburse you for any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items lost due to your violation of these terms and conditions. Bungie reserves the right, without prior notification, to limit the order quantity on any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items and/or to refuse to provide you with any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items. Price and availability of Virtual Currency and Virtual Items are subject to change without notice.
So out of that block, what are some important things? Well let's start here:
Any purchases of Virtual Currency or Virtual Items (whether through actual monetary transactions or accumulation through membership benefits or gameplay)
Right near the beginning we find out that with Destiny's money system, we have the option to buy either Destiny Bucks or Items with Destiny Bucks acquired through our adventures or that we decided to buy on our own. I find this scary, I'll admit, because this seems dangerously close to 'pay to win' which is something no community wants in their game. If you can buy items with real money, or enough in-game currency to where you can buy in any with real money indirectly, then we're in a bit of trouble. The first solution to this that comes to mind is a dual currency system, where there is something like Gold in the game you can use to buy things. Gold would be money dropped from dead enemies and the likes. Then Destiny Bucks which are what your real-world money gets you, which can buy special items that might enhance your game but not necessarily let you always win. I'm thinking things like WoW Heirlooms and the likes, but that's just a wild guess. Bare in mind this is all speculation. It also says benefits may be acquired through 'membership benefits.' Does this mean there is some sort of subscription for something? Or perhaps being on Bnet for a certain period of time entitles users to greater rewards. That would be awesome. We know there are trading systems now as well, though that admittedly was not difficult to figure out months before today. We know Bungie hired economy designers for Destiny so it seems obvious there will be a trading system or auction house. It's just that this is further supported by the fact that the ToU say we aren't allowed to get anything tangible in exchange for giving people 'gold' or 'Destiny Bucks.'
. All Virtual Currency and Virtual Items are unconditionally forfeited if your Bungie account is terminated or suspended for any reason, in Bungie’s sole discretion, or if Bungie discontinues any Virtual Currency or Virtual Item program.
This was interesting to me. It's pretty hard to get banned on Bnext, but here it says if you ARE banned, Bungie can hurt you in-game for it. Considering we can buy currency with real money, that means getting banned could potentially have real-world effects. I mean, if you have your account linked (the ToU made it seem clear that there will be many bonuses for doing so), buy something, and get banned... that's money gone potentially. Right in the beginning of the section...
You may have the opportunity to use virtual, in-game or in-app currency ("Virtual Currency")
When I was talking about dual currency earlier, it was partially based on this but I wanted to give this part its own space. The Bungie App may have its own form of Destiny Bucks. So maybe real money is all out-of-game? It's a little confusing. I know I rambled, but I just thought it was neat and I haven't seen anybody talk about the ToU yet. So... cool. We'll be able to purchase items and or money with real world stuff. Micro-transactions. Discuss.

 • As much as I enjoy destiny, the moment they add micro transactions is the moment I quite the game and stop buying there products. I refuse to support this behavior. It wouldn't be the first game that I have stopped playing due to this ideology. I am happy with expansions and DLC. If I enjoy the prior content I will continue to buy new content packs. Once it becomes the ability to cheat the game by purchasing individual items to get ahead with out having to play the game for them I am done. Destiny is bad enough when it comes to people being elitist and declaring that you must have cretin level or weapons to participate in some groups. This will only increase that gap. As of now this does not exist but bungie needs to know if they are considering it they will loose me as a customer.
