Two Souls: Chapter Two :: The First Return

I woke on earth. The European dead zone. Cities made of glass and steel were reduced to ash and vine. My ghost woke me. "What are you?" It was the first thing I could ask. "They call us ghosts." That's when the memories hit. Three flashes. Faint voices. Then I was back. "So, you are an embodiment of someone's soul on the physical plane." I was abrupt. Spontaneous. That is not like me. "Yes?" The ghost responded. "All I know is that I'm your ghost. So your soul." "If your my ghost, then what does that make me?" I look at my hands to find the answer for myself and the flashes return again. Right then, the ghosts light crackles and dies as the frame fell to the ground, with it I can feel my head going light and I begin to fall. Suddenly, the ghost shoots back up with its light even brighter that before and I am able to catch myself before I fall to the ground "What the hell just happened?!" I exclaimed. "I don't know? Huh" my ghost continues as if nothing had happened. I sat dumbfounded in the grimy puddle of water my limp body was found in. My ghost urges me to get up and move as he begins to explain what the Traveller is, how it came, what it did, and of course, how humanity fell. "you still haven't answers my question." I brushed of the shock quite well. "What am I?" The ghost had no answer no one did. Because we weren't guardians yet. We were just dead things with gifts. That's the way I saw it at least. My ghost informed me about villages in old Russia that may have answers. It is there that I found out about the warlords. And the "iron wolves" Over the next few decades I searched for as much knowledge as I could and did my best to survive. I am no victim however, surviving with the "travelers gift" as it was so called, proved to be quite simple. I learned about warlords taking over small towns and claiming territory for themselves. I loved seeing the spark in people's eye when the spoke of the Iron lords. I wasn't much for either side. Don't get me wrong, I had my beliefs. Humanity should have been looking to unite with our protection. I quite liked the stories of the Iron Wolves. But I was never an activist. I never specifically sought out any thing. So I wandered for years and years. Protecting towns to gather some glimmer and scavenging what I could for supplies. Armor for me, recourses for the nearby towns. Water, food, shelter. The first one I met was Felwinter. I climbed his mountain (didn't know it was his at the time) for entertainment and began talking to my ghost. He was a strange one. He came up to me an spoke. "Who might you be?" He was oddly calm. I was alarmed as I didn't hear him coming. He must have glided here. Damn floofers. "I'm not looking for any trouble" this is how I usually dealt with others with the gift that I had run into. I never met a warlord however. "Do you know who I am?" He was genuinely intrigued Slightly confused I responded frankly "not in the slightest" "I am Felwinter, a warlord. This is my peak." "I'll be leaving then. No need for any fighting. " I was abrupt and awkward I began to beckon my ghost. That's when he shot my leg "AAH WHY?!" I moved swiftly. I summoned A low magenta glow and it washed over my body, carrying my figure back wards. I raced down the mountain with my supplies but I saw it coming. A piercing tendril of void light shot straight through my metal bucket head. I died and my ghost brought me back at the foot of the mountain. I pushed off my back leg onto him, then with all my force I pushed off of his chest and flew upward. I pulled my forged sniper off my back in one swift motion and took aim as I fell. I took three precise shots. He was staggered and when he got his balance my bullets shoved its way into his left leg and ribs. (If he had any). With that I escaped in the cover of a smokey explosion. I hated killing guardians. I had done it before. I could tell from the beginning that I was horribly out matched. The strangest part was.... This man shot me out of curiosity, not to kill me or even hurt me. I found an abandoned car to sleep in for the night.
