I came across this comment on a video about Horizon Zero Dawn.
I personally find it stupid that some people can't get over themselves when it comes to playing as the opposite sex in video games.
In this example it appears the person doesn't like the idea of just a female protagonist. I can't help but question why the genitals of a character really matter? Shouldn't we be focused on the personality of the character and what they stand for as opposed to what is between their legs?
What annoys me is that the original commenter is calling people feminists without putting up an argument when being called out on it...
Anyway, thoughts?

I find it hard to identify with any scifi/fantasy characters.

Edited by Kankunation: 2/27/2017 4:20:35 AMWhat you see in that example, op, is the perfect example of an overrepresented demographic with an inferiority complex. They see one thing that isn't catered specifically to them, and so suddenly that game must be working towards some agenda to undermine him (typically the reason that the term sjw is thrown around in far more scenarios than it actually applies to). It's funny, yet sad that people can be that insecure about their own self that they have to avoid everything that doesn't remind them of themselves. As for me, I can play either a male or female character, and I swap quite often between them. Usually I'll pick my character's sex based on what role I want to play with them. A good example being skyrim, I picked males usually for the brutal melee characters, and picked females for assassin's and mages.
-
Someday there will be a game with a tranny protagonist. Only you won't find out till the end of the game lol.
-
No because I don't play identity politics but what I find annoying is when hack writers insert their sjw agenda into the game.
-
Honestly, my ability to identify with the main character relies more on the quality of the plot than it does their gender.
-
Genitals matter. Regardless of what that ladyboy convinced you of while you were drunk in Thailand.
seriously though I don't really care in video games
-
I mainly play with Male characters but female characters sometimes. They seem easier to play with. I identify with any character if they have character.
-
No, but I play as male when I can because I usually pretend it's me I'm playing as
-
I always pick a female character even though im a guy. The reason I do it is because some games code are so stupid that female characters tend to have a smaller hit box and the second is because females just look better then guys lol
-
Did these idiots never play tomb raider?
-
It shouldn't matter to anyone, because it doesn't matter. The same emotional resonance still carries no matter if it's a girl or guy. The only time that would matter if it was about a girl being pregnant or something like that, because guys wouldn't be able to relate to that etc. But, in Horizon's case, it's just about a person who explores and is trying to save her community. That person just happens to be a girl. So what?
-
Nope not at all, the human experience is universal so long as the story/game is good nothing else matters.
-
I mean, if I have a choice, I'll play as male. But if I dont, I'm fine with female.
-
Then why should people care if it's a female protagonist, and what about the people who don't like male protagonists
-
Not at all. I focus more on the story and gameplay than I do the main character model. Though I do pick male if given the choice, overall it doesn't matter.
-
I ask these ppl what they see: Create a character? Or Recreate yourself in the game?
-
No. As long as a games story is engaging and it's characters are well written then I have no problem identifying as a female character despite being a guy. Then again, I'm a storyline gamer who loves a good 3rd person narrative story. Some gamers prefer 1st person narratives and like to role play that they are the characters in these games ( case in point, Destiny or Dark Souls ). So I understand why this could be an issue for certain guys ( especially if the female game protagonist is written in such a way that her femininity is repeatedly shoved down the gamers throat ).

"We know it's fun to play as the chick every once in a while"

I don't give a flying fuhuuhhuuuuuuuk. I care if they're a likeable protagonist that I can root for, not if they have tits or a dick.

Edited by ISOL4TE: 2/25/2017 6:02:55 AMI enjoy playing as male characters, as a male myself, and I won't lie it does help me sort of identify with them more, *****but**** (before we burn me at the stake) it's not the end all be all deciding factor for relatability to me. For example, I can't relate at all to Duke Nukem cuz he's a giant tool. Meanwhile, I have an easy time relating to Impa (Zelda's guardian; particularly in the OoT game). If given a choice, I'd rather pick the male gender to play as for that slight impact it has to me on relatability, but if I'm forced to be a female character, it's not a problem at all for me. In other forms though, relatability can change a lot for me if gender is a huge part of the game. For example, if I'm forced to play as a female and have to deal with, say, some maternal dilemma she's having, or a fight with a boyfriend, or something of that sort, or just issues of femininity then I won't relate obviously. Whereas if the game is on a stage where I'm a guy character, about to head out to the bar with my guy friends, to talk about guy things (*coughCatherinecough*) then I can relate to that WAY more strongly.

I find it hard to relate to characters that aren't the Senate.
-
Unless the story focuses on their gender or things they can do with their gender, then it does not matter to me. I connect with the personalities. The person, not the genitals.
-
I sexually identify as a bell pepper and it offends me when protagonists are not my gender.
-
I agree, but I do still love me a good solid character customization screen. Nothing like spending the better half of six hours repeatedly tweaking settings until you have your ideal soulmate, until you restart and pick a default character, maybe with a beard though.

I don't feel as connected to the world and it just throws me off, especially for 3rd person games.
