Anyone interested in the history and potential lore behind the For Honor Factions?

[Note: The comments here are filing up with talks about historical Knights, Vikings & Samurai. Feel free to skip my game theory and dive right in.] I'll be discussing the types of armor used by the three factions in the game versus what was used historically and how the setting of For Honor may have caused the disparity between them. The History of For Honor begins with a great cataclysm that shook the known world plunging it into chaos.  After this event our three factions began warring over what little resources remained.  In the opening cinematic water was the focus.  Broadening our scope, setting aside food and shelter for the moment, there could have been another precious resource being fought over. One essential to waging war. Iron Ore We're told that the Knights managed to drive both the Samurai and the Vikings from Ashfield but just how were they able to defeat two perfectly capable armies?  What if it was because Ashfeld was rich in easily accessible Iron Ore?  This could potentially explain why the Vikings and Samurai invade Ashfield in the first place as well as why only the Knights seem to be wearing metal armor. Historically Vikings were known to go into battle wearing chainmail shirts, pants and hoods.  They did wear animal hide to keep warm but also a Champion might be awarded a wolf or bear pelt which they viewed as totem spirits.  Vikings believed the animal spirit would protect them and give them strength in combat.  It makes a sort of sense.  Your enemy's weapon is stoped or gets caught in the hide and that animal's skin did end up saving your own after all. No Samurai ever wore wooden armor.  Wooden armor in Japan during the early "Samurai Era" is not a myth however.  It existed, but Samurai never used it.  In the beginning they did have armor that wasn't made of metal.  I believe it was made of leather and silk cords but my knowledge is limited here. With little good ore to make both steel weapons and steel armor, the Vikings and Samurai may have been forced to focus on only making enough steel weapons to arm thier forces.  And with superior protection it's definitely feasible that a legion of well armored Knights could fend off both armies and drive them out. But there's another nuance that is observable through gameplay and reinforced by the campaign.  Even a Knights Armor is pierced by steel blades.  This is because in a game you need health, damage and such of corse.  In the story though a dagger punches clean through the front plate of a Knight.  If the armor was made of steel that would be impossible.  But if it were made of much softer iron and the blade was hardened steel then maybe it could be possible to peirce it.   This supports iron being a limited resource but also suggests that maybe the cataclysm had destroyed thier history as well.  Much like how today we can only speculate on how Greek Fire was made, maybe our Factions had to start civilization over and rediscover thier smithing techniques when everything got wiped out. All of this is just me geeking out about historical warfare and stuff. Still, here are some more possible talking points if anyone's interested. >Kensi is the only Samurai in the game >Orochi is a ninja >Historically Kights and Samurai were equal in terms of speed, protection, skill and mobility >Vikings favored the Axe not only for its ferocity in battle but because it was a multipurpose tool

      • Forgive me from the start here, as I'm not too well learned in Viking history. But didn't they have the best sword (the one Warlord wields in game)? Or is that for a select few Vikings?

          • Mythbusters says otherwise. Knights were far better equipped with armor and weapons. A katana bent when striking a knights blade. Vikings were a at least a match but would get notches after each hit. Historically, this would've been an ass beating. Vikings would be the only ones with a chance

The most interesting and crazy thing about the lore of this game its specifically designed to distract you from the fact that in 1998 the Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell in a Cell and plummeted 16ft through an announcers’ table.

Trivia and Lore of Old Another interesting bit of battle lore for the Norsemen of the Viking Age is that they heavily enjoyed fighting in wedge formations, and would use them to reach optimal ranges for spears, axes, and even their own hands, whilst those rich or lucky few that could lay hands on a sword worth having would usually run on their flanks. Norsemen at the time viewed swords as being valuable tools used to protect oneself, ones family, and ones keep, and would often name them and go to extreme lengths to care for and maintain them. Not to say they valued the axe, spear, and shield any less, but swords were in their own little class due to their extreme high cost at the time (in the North). Vikings were also not as hostile and ruthless as some might believe, as they were just as prominent in trade as they were in raiding, sometimes even more so. They also held to some codes of respect, and were highly respectful of women for the time period we are speaking of, but your mileage varied between groups. For example, with Trade Vs. Raid, visible shields on a Viking ship would usually indicate they meant to trade (if you could see them before they made land), and the opposite would be a raiding party. Some of them (Raiders), but not all, also made a habit of asking firmly for what they planned to pillage provided they were ashore already, or they sent a man ahead, etc, and would generally not cause too much of a ruckus if they were appeased without resistance, if, and I say IF they were one of the more respectable groups. They'd also roll their ships overland to another body of water if the need called for it, so that they could get the drop on whoever they had a problem with, and I believe another group was later on inspired by this and used it to some success. Bersærkers are a tale for another time, but they were feared even among their own kin in their time for great reason, and to be one in the late Viking Age (Not sure if that actually happened in the Late Viking Age or just after, but I'm somewhat sure it was around that time.) would be considered outlawry.

Vikings, those of high order and those who would most often act as champions carried a one handed sword which were, for their time, considered the most well crafted blade in the world. That being said, around the time these three groups would have all been capable of meeting the samurai were masters of the bow and the katana came much later. Knights plate armor didn't see use till after the hayday of vikings, as matter of fact knights in Europe were actually descended from vikings which settled in France and later went to war with and defeated the Normans. There are quite a few good videos on YouTube about this subject.

                        • I heard somewhere that the word "Shugoki" is derived from Japanese words for "guardian" and "demon". It makes sense, considering they are stated to have the strength of a demon. The demon influence is also clear when you look at the mask the Shugoki wear. The other thing I want to discuss is Japanese armor in general. The armor was mainly comprised of lacquered iron and leather plates that were connected by silk or chain strips that ran through rivets in the "scales" of plating. Chainmail was also sometimes used underneath for extra protection. Though not nearly as iron-clad as say, a Warden or Lawbringer, the Samurai armor was both lightweight and durable and allowed for a multitude of battlefield maneuvers, ranging from sword fighting to archery to horseback combat.
