The Duel-ality of For Honor

For Honor is polarizing to say the least.  On one hand it's about squaring off in a historical setting as either a Knight, Viking or Samurai against other players in intense duels where reading and predicting your opponent's next move is paramount to success or failure.  Life or Death. On the other hand you can spam, throw or double team your way to a swift, cheap, decisive victory.  And this duality permeates throughout every aspect of the title. Let's Start with the part that least affects gameplay, character designs.  Using the Vikings as an example the Warlord is the most historically accurate Hero of the bunch.  Or he would be if he were wearing a Hauberk (chainmail).  However our Raider friend seems to have taken the Conan the Barbarian approach to protecting his vital areas.  MORE MUSCLE.  Then there's things like the supposed Samurai wearing wooden armor. Oh the elitists must be typing and streaming furiously about that one.  I honestly don't care because I like the visual material distinction they've created between the warring factions.  This conflict of realism extends into the move sets as well.  The Warden performs a "murder stroke" as an execution, grabbing his sword by its blade and burying the cross guard in some poor guys neck.  But that pool cue execution by the Valkyrie is ridiculous.  Eyeball, left socket.  LoL Next up is gear.  There's a steady progression here with 4 or so armor options and 3 weapon parts with stat boosts that allow you to create a build of sorts.  You can unlock legendary gear, upgrade it, or change it's cosmetic look to something you prefer while retaining the desired stats.  Very nice.  But RNG end match drops, RNG loot crates and Microtransactions means you either pray to RNGsus or deal with year 1 Cryptarch antics.  However gear only matters in some of the game modes available. In Duel and Brawl gear stats are turned off.  Playing this way you really get the thrill of facing off against another player with nothing but your wits and twitch skills to keep you alive.  It can be very, very intense with the outcome balancing on the tip of a blade where one wrong move can lead to a sudden and bloody demise.  Or you can enter one of the more chaotic modes where you will be... >Thrown off a cliff >One shot by a projectile >Find yourself in 1v2 & 1v3 situations >Get hit by a spammy teammate leaving you wide open to that Heavy Attack you would have easily parried but now you're dead ... always fun.  Actually these modes really are a lot of fun if you can find at least 2 other m8s to roll with.  And even though I think this title has a lot of hit and miss qualities the amount of options available to you tips the scale from "pretty good, but flawed" over to "pretty damn good, still flawed".  A Subtle but significant difference IMO. I won't get into the "Who's Best, Knights, Vikings or Samurai?" argument... Yah I Will.  KNIGHTS FOR LIFE FOOLS. Eh hem... sorry But there are a lot of options available to the player.  If you don't like certain modes or mechanics you have several other choices available.  So yah, some good, some bad but overall a very enjoyable experience.
