Destiny: Legend Untold, Chpt 11 Pt 6

Chapter Eleven: One Small Step for William, a Giant Tumble for Drew Part Six "Should we do anything about those Hive and Fallen?" I asked. "Yes!" Drew exclaimed quietly. "Nah, they'll tear each other apart on their own," Sierra responded, smacking Drew in the back of the head. We moved a bit further away from the building before summoning our Sparrows and driving down the main path that went through the area, heading away from where we had entered. The path curved in a downwards moving loop that was lined along the sides by cliffs of rock. "So won't the Fallen just mess with the beacons? What's the point if they'll just ruin the work we've done?" I inquired as we drove. "They won't mess with the beacons," John answered, "I don't really know why, but it's probably because they realize that we'll replace them anyway and it's dangerous to get close to them since Guardians will be stopping by. Also, not much point in messing with a small little device that just tells Guardians who someone wants to have killed next." "Because we'll kill them anyway and we have other ways of getting messages like that," I added. "Precisely," John agreed. As the conversation ended, we came upon a giant slab of rock that the path curved around, but we drove up the flat incline of the slab until we reached the top. Bellow us, the path curved past the rock into a giant bowl-shaped area, encircled with jagged rock faces. Directly across from us, at the opposite side of the circle, lay another massive slab of rock that functioned as a ramp leading out of the area. Far in the distance behind that ramp, a fissure in the Moon's surface could be seen, sheets of rock pushed up until they broke apart and pointed like jagged teeth towards the sky. A billowing cloud of green and brown gas rose from the depths of the Moon to escape through the massive opening. But bellow us, in the center of the bowl-shaped area, lay a giant pit plunging deep down into the Moon that proved to be more intimidating than the thought of what could punch a hole through the Moon's surface. The entire pit was lined with Hive structures; a spiraling staircase of layer after layer of Hive-infested halls and caverns. The hole fell into the darkness, its bottom hidden from view, and trails of green and black fire writhed out of the shadows, somehow not illuminating anything around them. An entrance down into the Hive structuring that lines the pit lay to our right, Acolytes could be seen prowling in front of it. "The Hellmouth," Sally's voice shook with fear. "This is one of the entrances into the Hive's tunnel systems that go through the Moon's interior, and it is where Crota resides," John told us, also seeming a little shaky. "I've seen mention of Crota amongst our documents on the Hive. Who is he?" I asked. "He's the leader of the Hive on the Moon, and responsible for the deaths of thousands of Guardians during the Great Disaster, when we tried to take back the Moon," John answered. "Well, I'm not going down that hole anytime soon," Sierra mumbled. "Yeah, seems like a bad idea," I agreed, admittedly a little compelled to go down and see what knowledge could be obtained down there. "Let's get placing those beacons," Sierra ordered, than began looking for the fastest way down from our perch. To our left the slab met the wall of rocks and a trail of small boulders allowed for one to work their way downward against stone barrier, so we decided to go down that way rather than take the time to go back down and around. We walked up to the edge and Sierra hopped down to one of the closest rocks, landing gracefully on its flat surface. She then jumped down to another boulder and took a long leap off of it after landing. Falling down along the boulder path, she jumped a second time in the air to get further away from the jagged rocks, then a third time as she approached the ground to slow her decent and land safely. After taking a few steps back from the Pike of rocks, she looked up to Drew and I expectingly. "Well, I'm not going to go that fast," I told Drew, "I'd crack my skull open doing that with my current ability to jump." So I jumped into a boulder further down and began working my way down with small steps and hops. Drew shook his head condescendingly as he watched. "This is how it's done, slowpoke!" Drew called, then leaped down onto the mound of rocks and began bounding down in large jumps. As he reached a rock several feet to my side and a couple feet in front of me, his foot slipped on an uneven rock and he flew forward. The Exo hit the first rock face first and continued to bounce down rock by rock in a mess of flailing limbs and cries of pain. He tumbled to the bottom and stopped at Sierra's feet, unmoving. But after a moment his limbs began realigning and he pushed himself up. As he did so, I reached the bottom and walked past him, patting his shoulder. "Slow and steady wins the race," I chuckled. "Shows what you know," Drew laughed, "I reached the bottom first." We moved on from the wall of rocks and followed our waypoints downhill to a half-buried building. Rush marked the ground right next to the now useless doorway and I slammed the beacon down, making sure it was secure. The next waypoint pointed up a slope close to the entrance into the Hive's giant pit. We climbed onto our Sparrows once again and turned to our right, putting the pit to our left and skirting around its edge. Reaching the slope, we cruised uphill slowly in case there were enemies waiting. At the crest of the hill we could easily see the entrance into the Hive's lair lining the interior of the pit, and at our side a bowl was dug out into the hill and a few small Hive walls and a small spire were placed at the bottom of it. Nothing stirred down by the spire, but a couple of caves opened up into the small area. Sierra said she'd take care of this beacon and went up next to a couple large rocks at the edge of the indention in the ground, planting the beacon right next to them. "I think that's some sort of small shrine," Rush suggested as I gave the spire one last glance. "Well hopefully someone will kill whatever monster that shrine is for soon," Sierra responded, "Come on, we're on the last beacon. Let's get this over with." Our Sparrows carried us around the pit's edge again, but this time that dark hole was on our right. We passed the stone slab we had climbed down from and went around towards the giant rock ramp that led out of the other end of the area, passing a few clusters of Fallen and Hive on the way. But those groups were too far away to bother us and didn't seem to try putting up a chase. The Hive and Fallen didn't even seem to want to fight each other even though they were so close together; they seemed to be waiting for the other to make a move. As we went around, a gap could be seen in the rock wall lining the bowl, and through the sliver I saw part of an old human station. We passed the giant slab of stone that formed the ramp, along with yet another half-buried human structure, before coming upon a large boulder that our waypoints marked. All three of us climbed off of our Sparrows. "Please let me do it, please PLEASE," Drew begged. "Go ahead," I chuckled. "If you break that beacon, explaining to the Vanguard why we needed another one will be the least of your problems," Sierra warned jokingly. "Don't worry, I'm careful," Drew assured us, earning an eye roll from Sierra. "Mission accomplished!" Drew shouted, then plunged the beacon into the ground. "Really? You had to say that?" Sierra criticized. "Wanted to try it out," Drew shrugged. "Ghosts, get the ships," Sierra sighed. "Aye aye, captain," John responded. Soon we were hurtling through space back towards Earth and the City. Drew kept talking to us and Sierra naturally kept fussing at him, so neither of them noticed when Rush cut me out of the channel. "Okay, tell me about this dream," my Ghost ordered. ____________________________________ Link to Chpt 11 Pt 5:https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/219174892/0/0 Link to Chpt 11 Pt 7:https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/219175511/0/0 Link to ToC:https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/212710816/0/0
