A question about ghosts...

Another post reminded me of a question... are there a finite amount of Ghosts? Or is The Traveler automatically making new ones? Cuz if finite, seems like a big weakness our enemies don't exploit... Unrelated question, but is Ether kinda like the Fallen's form of Light? Because if so, that provides interesting context towards the idea that The Traveler is still experimenting with ways to get uplifting a race "right". Edit: Little context for the Ether question... some people's snap response (which is just as legit as any response, really, not calling people dumb) is to assume Ether is their air, they need it to breathe. However, different amounts of Ether equate different strength. A Dreg is alotted much less than a Captain, whom is alotted much less than an Archon. This implies that Ether=Power in much the same way Guardians grow stronger the more Light they have. Over time, we've learned that light, itself, is a quantifiable... thing. We also know that The Traveler visited these other races. So its not simply a question based upon the explosion of light present when you pull a headshot we all observe. I genuinely believe that its possible the Traveler's gift of Light to the Fallen may have been in the form of this Ether. Of course, this opens up more questions about a Servitor's role for me, as well... is a Servitor actually the Fallen form of our Ghost?

  • Thoughtful post. I think you might be on to something. Haven't read it but I've seen others make reference to Cabal-related grimoire cards indicating they believe that disrupting ghost resurrection (by destroying ghosts, presumably) is the only way to counter the otherwise completely asymmetric Guardian threat. A finite number of ghosts would be disastrous should they find a way to destroy them, it seems. I tend to think they are finite, released at the Travelers "death" like a million spiderings, all stretching their flight webs in the air at once and setting off for parts unknown on their long search. Not sure how the guardians can "die" while their ghost survives, though. Seems they should be intrinsically linked, right?

    • The ghosts are the finite number of ghosts from the traveler, but they're also our ghosts. All the guardians are reanimated dead people which plays heavy context in the lore leaving the question more in the realms of if we are the good guy or not. The reason this isn't taken as a chance by the enemies is because the guardians are like spec ops operatives, stronger and more skilled than them. Plus guardians don't die unless you kill their ghost first, so, guardian numbers stay constant. Answer is that they can't, while guardian forces may be stretched out between the vex, fallen, cabal and hive, it only takes 6 to destroy a vex god, a hive god, it only takes 3 to infiltrate the higher command echelons and take out commanders. The guardians aren't spread thin because of their impact. The other reason is that the enemy forces are split, this is a 5 way war for all participants. Each side has their own reasons: Hive (and taken) wants to destroy the traveler Vex wants to perfect the solar system Cabal is inspect the solar system for later invasion Fallen is after the traveler by any means As for ether, ether is essential for fallen to survive and the fallen are after the traveler because it ruined their civilisation in the Whirlwind. The fallen believe if they can steal the traveler (the great machine) back, they can relive their glory days with ether flowing free again. Ether acts like both oxygen and nutrition, the more an eliksni gets the stronger he gets. The Whirlwind was like being an athlete on a proper balanced nutritious diet being cast out the airlock, to the fallen that's accurate. So to answer the questions in a teal deer fashion: Yes, there are limited ghosts No, the enemies can't take advantage of this Yes, the ether is the fallen life force Yes, the ether is the fallen strength.

      • Ghosts are limited, yes. It takes a long time to find the right guardian, to find that spark which the Ghost will find, and bond with. As for your other questions, I believe that all fallen still retain the smallest, the barest traces of light from before the Whirlwind. If you remember in the OG Sepiks strike, Zavala comments that with Sepiks dead, the Fallen cannot come back. Their souls will going screaming back to hell, as he says. This imply that the Prime Servitors can in-fact, keep the Fallen coming back. Until they are destroyed themselves. In actual game-play mechanics, when one headshots a Fallen, a gout of white energy spews out. This could be one of two things: 1. The Ether that they had within their bodies. 2. Light. We know that two of the actual races are not true beings of 'Darkness', so to speak. The Cabal are merely scouting out our Solar System, to prepare for a bigger invasion fleet. This is likely going to happen very soon, due to the fact that the Cabal do not have any more high ranking soldiers in the Sol System. Then we have the Fallen. We know that the Traveler visited them before us, and we know that the Fallen had time to build a culture that spanned many stars. (This comes from an item description, described by Variks. 'Eliksni once ruled many stars. Now, we fight for one that is not our own.) They are fighting to try and survive...and to regain favor of the Traveler, what they call, 'The Great Machine'. Perhaps so they too, can be bathed in light?

        • Regarding your edit, Ether would be like oxygen. Imagine if the oxygen level on earth was twice as dense, we would be dealing with spiders the size of dogs, and dogs the size of lions

            • In Destiny 2 the Cabal attack and have learned through surveillance and research is how to disable our ghost. Throughout the story campaign and up into the Raid you will have no abilities, no super no fancy jumps and no way to rez. In fact the only way to not wipe when you die is to play with another person who can apply a special silver bandaid to you that you can conveniently buy from Tess for the low price of 1000 silver each.

            • Well you know how the bottom of the traveler is all black and broken? I believe that's where the ghosts broke off to find the guardians, that they are actually part of the traveler, I mean the first one is white after all

              • During the prehistoric age, there was more oxygen in the air, and so the animals were bigger. More ether means the Fallen get bigger. It's even in some Variks grimoire card, it mentions Variks wearing a rebreather that administers ether so he can breath. It is their oxygen.

Well In the more it states that the traveler was originally the fallens God that they worshipped and the guardians in a basic took it so maybe that was their form of motes of light as you said I kinda agree with you ya know a kinda "off" form or fallen type of the travelers light so to speak?

              •
Another post reminded me of a question... are there a finite amount of Ghosts? Or is The Traveler automatically making new ones? Cuz if finite, seems like a big weakness our enemies don't exploit... Ghosts are finite, yes. But, the only races able to efficiently destroy Ghosts are Hive and Vex. And they do exploit that opportunity. Unrelated question, but is Ether kinda like the Fallen's form of Light? Because if so, that provides interesting context towards the idea that The Traveler is still experimenting with ways to get uplifting a race "right". Ether is...never mind. Edit: Little context for the Ether question... some people's snap response (which is just as legit as any response, really, not calling people dumb) is to assume Ether is their air, they need it to breathe. I genuinely believe that its possible the Traveler's gift of Light to the Fallen may have been in the form of this Ether. Ether isn't a Fallen form of light, it's a thick, air-like substance the Fallen use to breathe. More Ether does equal more power. By the way, an Archon's size is supposed to be thie size for a healthy Fallen. Meaning the reduction of Ether has a huge impact on their health. When you see the Ether leave their bodies, it's probably because shooting their heads off opens their weird, Fallen trachea, releasing the Ether inside them. Of course, this opens up more questions about a Servitor's role for me, as well... is a Servitor actually the Fallen form of our Ghost? It's a Fallen version of a robotic, mobile, weaponized tree, basically.
Ether is directly tied to their strength BUT it is more a necessity than an empowerment. Ether is quite like oxygen to them. One of Skolas' grimoire cards talks about the young Eliksni choking without ether. The ether is rationed very carefully because of their limited supply. That's why Servitors and Primes are worshipped. Because they convert matter into Ether. Ether is given out in allotments, Captains and Archons/Kells having the greatest portion, therefore they thrive and grow big and their arms grow back more powerful. Edit: this is also probably why the Devil Splicers gain so much influence and power. The splicing of SIVA made it so they no longer require the limited ether to survive. In the Grimoire Aksis even says to cast off ether as their lifesource and turn to SIVA for their strength.

                • About ether, they need it to survive, but if they don't have it, they will grow weak until the point they die. If they have a lot of ether, than they will grow strong and rise in ranks. So comparing it to food or air is a good comparison, unless you want to compare it to protein. The fallen used to have the traveler and even had their own collapse. The traveler is spherical(SPHERICAL!!) therefore they like to worship perfect spheres. Besides the role of gods, I heard somewhere that they control the flow of ether. The kell is the political leader, the archon is a military leader, and a servitor is a show of muscle, and it controls the flow of ether

                        • I just assumed Ether was a vital component of Eliksni physiology, some sort of evolutionary thing. Maybe abundant in their system, but being so far from home, they've had to ration it, and resort to synthetic sources. I dunno, just what I thought.

                        • I'm under the impression that once the Traveler left during the whirlwind that the Fallen went withdrawal, similar to how an addict would. However since they had no source of light to help curb this they created synthetic light in the form of ether. As of right now it is not know wether the traveler creates new ghosts or not. It's possible that it did at one point but got too weak to after having its light drained by hive rituals and blocked by the black garden. It's also possible that now that those are no longer problems that the traveler may create new ghosts.

                        • Another good thing to mention about the ghosts is that there are probably many more ghosts out there than there are gaurdians, because if you remember from caydes stash mission, our ghosts said that it took a REALLY long time to find us. This leads me to believe that there are many other ghosts that haven't found their gaurdians yet. So even if our enies could exploit the limited number of ghosts, our numbers would still be increasing for a while as ghosts find their gaurdians
