Exotics are....well, not soo exotic anymore?

Exotics are supposed to be some of the best weapons in the game. That is the reasoning why you can only have exotic equipped at a time. Usually exotics will have a exotic perk (unique) that makes it special but since they are "exotic", the other stats are lowered. In almost every y2 "exotic", the "exotic" perk is sooo bad or weak that most legendary counterparts outclass them or are preferred. (cause bungie doesn't want guardians to feel powerful, hence the continuous yearlong NERFS all year) Hereafter sniper rifle- not recommended for end game content as "exotic" perk procs after rapid kills, which would have to be low level enemies. Even then the perk isn't that useful Zen meteor- same concept as hereafter, rapid kills shoots a laser beam. You can't really use it for bosses, and who uses a sniper to kill low level enemies? Again...the perk is worth the exotic slot, or at least for me isn't beneficial at all. Ace of spades hand cannon- precision kills move one round into the chamber. It has firefly but soo do a lot of legendary hand cannons that don't take up a exotic slot. The "exotic" perk isn't worth the slot....again, my opinion I only named a few but I didn't have this concern in y1. Almost all exotics were great except 1 or 2. Y2 is the opposite, all exotics suck except one or 2. (When I say y2 exotics, I'm not talking about carried over y1 exotics) Can we agree bungie needs to do a better job designing exotics?! Awesome exotics in y1 is what gave this game a a lot of replay value. I used to run strikes and raids over and over for a "chance" of a exotic to drop. If this is how exotics will be from now on, I'm really disappointed in their direction. They were once the most sought after weapons and now they are some of the worst weapons. (Don't get me started on how bad perks and how boring and weak weapons got in y2, totally new discussion) Cozmo, If you see this, pass to the devs (Jon weisneski) that we want to feel powerful, we want exotics that feel as the title states "exotic". We want better perks, this game is supposed to be fun. The negatives outweigh the positives in these weapons, what fun is that? The weapons feel sooo weak compared to y1, what fun is that? The perks are soo situational and when they do proc aren't worth what they give for the few seconds they last, what fun is that? Edit#1- ok, the exotic swords are wrecking machines. Telesto is also solid, zhalo just because it's the only elemental primary. Edit#2- It would be great if all primary exotics would have a elemental burn. That would make the exotic slot worth it a lot more! (AchillesESTBeast came up with burns on all primary exotics idea in a reply and I thought that's a great idea! let our voices be heard to the devs!!! thanks man!) Waiting on Cozmo to tell me he is going to pass it to the developers....

  • The exotics were never meant to be "the strongest weapons in the game". There was in year 1 but a couple weapons that poked above the rest. In a game where bungie tries to keep the PvP relevant and NOT turn this into another Borderlands, they wanted a semblance of balance. Hereafter's exotic perk is the blinding effect. Perfection is on Stillpiercer as well. The Blinding effect though, does need a buff. Either actual damage connected with the ability, decrease the time it requires for the effect to happen, AND in addition to either or both of those make the shot guarenteed to blind. Hereafter is more useful than Patients and Time. Patients and Time's exotic perk was nigh useless. You had to be hard scoped for a long time, and people could still see you. Ace of Spades? it might be meh, but it's at least a solid weapon. Having Rifle Barrel and a naturally high base range actually makes it one of the few GOOD Hand Cannons in the game that you do not need a "god roll" for because it's static. It's great against mobs because you do not have to reload as often and it's got Firefly. How is this worse than Hardlight? It's also a better PvE weapon than say Hawkmoon because of that. Or lets look at First Curse. For PvE at least it is currently the most reliable Hand Cannon in the game. Which one of the highest base ranges, THE best reserve for a hand cannon in the game, what is effectively double Range Finder, Triple Tap, and automatically gets bullets back on first precision kill of a mag? Almost NONE of the drawbacks of Hand Cannons currently are holding this thing back. The only reason it's not that great in PvP is because it's archtype in PvP has always been subpar, that's not the guns fault. Your also greatly underselling Zhalo. Zhalo is good not just because it's elemental. Multikills grant free bullets and super energy. Chain-lightning actually procs decently often, increasing it's overall damage dealt and destroys mobs (which makes it very easy for it to get multi-kills). This thing is a monster in PvE, and would still be even if they removed the element. Sleeper Simulant hits retarded hard. And is an excellent boss killing weapon to use at near sniper distances. It's exotic perk is supposed to be a tossaway because of how much damage it can deal. No Time to Explain is the best primary weapon to use against Bosses short of Touch of Malice. You can infinitely drill into a boss or any high tier enemy without having to stop to reload, and is just natively strong when either or both small arms and/or juggler is on. Tlaloc is disputed in the community as to whether or not it's overpowered in PvP. == Y1 had dud exotics too. And not just "1 or 2". Hardlight ring a bell? it's been buffed multiple times and it's still subpar. Monte Carlo was also the same. It's exotic perk wasn't that usefull save for making some bounties easier, which is inconsequential. Dreg's Promis? it was trash in Y1, and it's buffed Y2 counter part is also trash. Super Good Advice? Now it's a decent gun, but back in Y1 it was garbage. Patients and Time was never that an astounding weapon. Dragon's Breath before it's change was just not that good, and even now it's only got niche uses. 4th Horseman was a rollercoasted, from suck, to amazing in PvE, back to suck in Y2. Midas was merely a solid weapon, but nothing all that special. It didn't get used at all until everything around it was nerfed and it itself was buffed to have the intrinsic High Caliber rounds. It was the "Ace of Spades" of Y1, for PvE at least, functional, but not impressive. Lord of Wolves was meh, On paper pretty damn good but was and still is in a way outclassed by the High impact/range shotguns. Badjuju needed a couple buffs before it became good. People are too hung up on the romantic memory of Ice Breaker and Gjallerhorn to remember the fact we had to have MORE THAN ONE PATCH DEDICATED TO BUFFING DOZENS OF EXOTICS AT ONCE because they were not that strong. Do a portion of existing exotics need some blanket buffs? Yes, yes they do. But don't run around saying that Y1 was better, Y1 merely had a couple outliers that Bungie learned not to do again (exotics with blanket higher DPS than other guns, like Gjallerhorn and Thorn). It was just as bad, if not worse. Many of the Y2 bland exotics are far more functional than the Y1 dud exotics before their numerous buffs, hell some Y1 exotics STILL need buffs. At least off the top of my head, I can't think of a Y2 exotic weapon that is as bad as Super Good Advice (was) and Dreg's promise (is). Those Y1 weapons were/are downright unusable. Y2, the worst of the Exotics, like Fabian Stratagy or Boolean Gemini, are just subpar at worst. Not unsusable. TL;DR. Again, I do agree that Exotics overall need some buffs. But please don't go spreading the false statement that Y1 had such great exotics. It was a mess that was all over the board and had propotionally more potatoes than we got with the Taken King that only stopped being such crummy weapons after numerous buffs, and even then still remain kind of lousy.

    • My humble opinion: An exotic is a decent to upper tier weapon with an added build perk. Regen health, more super, recharge melee, etc. While not all effect the character itself all seem to be designed to build around. I personally find my legendary weapons seem better stat and performance wise. They just don't add anything more than a weapon to the slot.

As was said they aren't the end all be all. They're exotic in look and function quite literally. Since no one seems to get their functional purpose. They specialise in game play styles, and help spike them. I find it funny that people complain that legendaries do better without explaining at what. They clearly aren't understanding an exotics specialised nature. It's like laughing at the healer for not doing any damage. The community is honestly pretty dumb about things. This is one of the bigger misunderstandings.

      • I don't think so man. Sleeper is as exotic as it gets. Black Spindle is a dps machine, Dragon's Breath has a gigantic napalm aoe, Hardlight is a laser light show, Suros has a sweet spinup perk, Hereafter is the best sounding sniper in the game, Jade Rabbit never has to be reloaded if you use it right, the list goes on. It's not about being op or ridiculous anymore. Exotics now are supposed to have a unique look, feel and sound and sometimes put out some serious damage. I like the way it's heading in regards to variety. Gone are the days of having Gally in the heavy for six months straight. I welcome it.

      • It seems they're afraid they'll be too OP and will prevent the use of any other guns. Sadly, yes, this makes most exotics garbage

        • I prefer to think of exotics as being the bridge between crappy legendary rolls and god rolls. Not every roll you get is gonna be 100% dependable but if you have the appropriate exotic, it will fit the role you need just fine. Some are built strictly for PvE, others for PvP, and still some are in between not excelling at either. I love most of the exotic primaries and heavies. They're so fun. But they're also gimmicky. Once you learn them, they can be easily countered. Such is the purpose of exotics to be gimmicky. Hopefully this may change with Year 3. I'd like to see more exotics in the fray. But I think at the truly competitive level, you need god roll legendaries. Exotics never change, but legendary perks do.

              • Exotics are "exotic" in appearance, sound, and mostly function. They arent supposed to be the answer to every question. Instead, they are supposed to stand apart, to be different. Every exotic is just that, unique, as there is no legendary equivalent.

For year one gjallahorn and thorn felt exotic, Ice breaker looked, sounded, and when used felt exotic. The winner has to be Vex Mythoclast. That was everything an exotic should be.

I also had every exotic in the first week.....and before you say that if I feel that way I shouldn't buy them, I will be at a big disadvantage through light level, or any exotic that is good I won't have. It's a shame they're returning in Rise of Iron.

                      • What should be done is that exotic weapons should be removed from PvP entirely (or create a few sets of PvP specific exotics). If exotic weapons are made to be PvE only, they could start getting buffs that improve their overall usefulness in PvE activities rather than being made to be fair in PvP. Also, Zhalo is an absolute beast. It has amazing crowd control and it shreds through enemies once you learn how to handle it. Not only that, it works like a baby Bad-Juju helping your super charge faster!
