Raid Matchmaking: THE DEBATE

All Raids should have matchmaking

Old Raids should have matchmaking

Today I pose a question to you! How do you feel about raid matchmaking? Are we fine how we are now? Or would it be a great improvement? LETS DEBATE: Pro Matchmaking Adding matchmaking to the raids will allow for more players to participate in them. No longer will you be forced to use an LFG site or recruitment threads if you don't have any friends online. Just launch the activity and Walla you are in a full fire team! While some would argue that some people would get matched with lower light levels or just players who don't know what to do, this offers for players to teach others each encounter. This would add to the social aspect of the raids even more! And hey, if you still wanted to go on LFG, you can! Nobody is stopping you. If you think the new raids would be too hard, that's okay. We could have matchmaking for VoG and CE but not Kings Fall, because those raids are much lower light level. That way newer players can run through those old raids for the first time much more easily, or old players can do the same just for fun. Problem Solved Con Matchmaking Matchmaking for raids is a terrible idea! This would lead to more frustration than ever. People with very low light levels, inexperienced players, people instantly leaving, players with no mic, these are the players you will be getting matched up with, and the list just goes on and on. Adding a matchmaking system is a waste of Bungies time. With half the player base on LFG and the other half raid matchmaking, wait times will be longer than ever. And when you finally do get a match, people could purposefully troll or go AFK with no one to kick them. How do you expect checkpoints to work? If I have Golgoroth cp , will I only get matched with people at Golgoroth? If so, wait times will be even longer. If not, I might lose my checkpoint and miss out on the Golgoroth loot I still needed to get. Getting through a strike with Randoms is hard enough, doing a raid with Randoms would be near impossible. So what do you think? Should raid matchmaking be a thing or not? What other topics are worthy of a Debate? EDIT: Wow, glad to see everyone voicing there opinions in the comments. This post has gotten more love than I expected. Fun to read these comments.

  • It's a double edged sword for me. Matchmaking would stop the need to constantly use lfg sites which would save hassle. However... anyone who has ever used lfg sites for raids know that after 1-2 wipes you will always get the impatient players just leave. This will happen more so with matchmaking. If they added the same options as they have in their recruitment section it could work. (i.e. select experience level, check Point, light level etc). You don't want to be trying to finish hard mode and have a 280 noob jump in at oryx playing in the ogre pools.

Can debate it all you like, Bungie stated in one of their recent interviews that raids are focused on you bringing together a team to work through it and that matchmaking wouldn't be implemented. From interview
When you guys first started developing raids for the first time, philosophically were there things that set a raid apart from the rest of the content in Destiny that you’re like ‘Okay this is what makes something a raid as opposed to a strike?’ Absolutely, there was a mandate that we had the ability to break the rules. No matchmaking is a huge thing. We can design with the assumption that you're playing with people who you are invested with. Even if they’re not your friends, you've put some amount of investment in being able to play with them and they’re not this resource to you. The fact that we can account for you having voice communication is big.
• Really VoG is the only raid where randos can't do it micless because they haven't done it before.

  • If people want matchmaking that won't work, fine; give it to them. Just don't bitch when the 3rd group you try with in a row all don't have mics and expect to be carried.

  • Negative. Unless they implemented a system where you join people who have about the same amount of completions of that raid as you.

  • I am not a supporter but a thing to make it better is if you set it so only people above a specific light level can join and only players who have a completion (can be put to more than 1 completion) Another setting could be headsets only. So basically a ton of options or else all downside things can happen.

  • It's called find a team on the forums. I don't want a bunch of dweebs with no mic making the raid take 12 hours

Matchmaking defeats the purpose of being social and finding a team that best fits the raid your doing. And don't hit me with that bullshit saying "Well, you shouldn't have to go on an app or website to play the game! -Idiot Casual" Then why the hell are you playing a team based game maily involving intense amounts of communication? The whole point of an MMO is to be social with the community. Finding a raid team is actually quiet fun! Edit: believe it or not, the majority of the Destiny/raid population of the game don't know what the -blam!- they are doing... Not do they have mics.

    • No because you would get people who have no idea how to do the raid

    • I do raids very rarely...because I don't have a normal raid group (unless you count my kids and I raiding the cereal aisle). Even then, I don't want matchmaking for raids. The cons outweigh the pros. With the changes to the recruitment forums Bungie made it easier to look for a group, plus the third party sites that people use. On top of this with RoI we're getting some in game clan love (finally) so you can see who is online, making it easier to group with people you (may or may not) know.

    • Selected ‘other’. Really don't care if it's introduced or not. Might give it a try if it is but it really isn’t hard to find a team on the forum here. Matchmaking might boost the numbers in the Vault and Crota raids though which is a positive.

    • Add matchmaking. There's no harm in adding it. If you are THAT afraid of the matchmaking, stick to the ways of LFG. Worked for me for 2 years. If you "don't have the time," to go on another site and look for others, then matchmaking it is. But don't expect experienced players. Expect noobs who will be learning, and trolls who will be trolling. But give it a month or two, and everyone will know how to do it. It's just the trolls that will be the problem.

    • IG LFG. Just another screen for the menu, where people can post fireteam needs and such. Then offsite lfg won't be necessary. Problem solved, no matchmaking for raids it's a pain enough trying to find people to do them who are willing to listen.

    • The mic issue should be non existent with roi being new gen only. All xbox and ps4 come with a mic so no excuse there. Yes to matchmaking. If you don't want to dont. Its that simple. Everyone is making this an issue when really it isn't. All parts of destiny should have the matchmaking option.

    • I honestly feel that those who don't want match making are saying so for selfish reasons. Matchmaking is never a requirement. It is an option. Why would people really try and stop an option, that they themselves may not need to use? So others who don't have a regular 6 man fire team can't get into the raid? To force people to use external sites to find groups? Sounds like people just trying to make the game less accessible to others for no reason at all. If match making was added, I would hardly use it. Maybe to fill an empty spot occasionally?

      • They should make custom matches available to those who want to run their own teams and make matchmaking for those who don't.

      • IF. IF IF IF. If it's optional. Then by all means, open yourselves up to the hell of no mic, uncoordinated, rage quitting, not knowing any of the mechanics, matchmaking. Just, you've been warned, it probably won't be a good time.

      • In the end I think raid matchmaking would turn more players new to raids off of raiding than help them. Imagine your first raid experience is match making with three people who have no mic or no understanding of the raid. How long would you or anyone stick around after being stuck on one phase of a raid for an hour or two. How many wipes because of someone wanting to use a rocket launcher and fusion rifle on golgoroth would you stick around for. I've picked up people on LFG with no mic before AND taught them the raid but that was my choice to do so and with the rest of the raid team being solid. People should be allowed to choose whether or not they want to take on inexperienced players, those under geared or with no mics. They shouldn't have it forced on them. As for the complaint that people don't have the time to go to LFG and find players.... is a weak excuse considering. As long as you're HONEST on LFG about your experience and capabilities you'll find a group. As long as you're not obnoxious you shouldn't have problems keeping a group. The easiest way to solve those problems is to be the host. You have the ability to kick people who are being douches, can pull in others that may need help, etc. 15 minutes (gross exaggeration on time) to find an LFG group is nothing compared to the hours you could potentially spend in a match made raid. If it's optional... to each their own. If this becomes a thing, just don't choose matchmaking then come to the forums and complain about how you can't complete a raid because of the people you get paired up with and talk about how it's "too hard" and start flooding the forums with "nerf the raid" posts like everyone likes to do with everything else in this game.

      • Go on LFG now. Post that you are taking anyone through kings fall. They don't need a mic. No experience. No light level requirements. Try and get the raid done without communicating with any of them. That's what a matchmade raid would be like. Try that, come back and tell everyone if you think it was a good idea. This topic got posted a few days ago and promised to pay someone $100.00 via PayPal if they were able to get this done within 12 hours of the post without kicking anyone. Without anyone leaving. Nobody took me up on it. Plenty of other people also offered to put more money down insisting it was impossible. And as for 'what harm could it do in making it optional'. Matchmade raids would have a near 100% failure rate. The forums would be filled with people screaming to make the raid easier, require no communication and team work. Bungie would end up making the raids easier to accommodate the Matchmade raids and we would just end up with strikes.

        • I typically look in LFG for raid groups, it's hit and miss. Sometimes you end up with terrible players who, or scumbags who boot you after one mistake, but at least on normal you can do ok. If random groups can get through most of the raid and communicate, might as well have in game matchmaking since so many are looking for teams or players. One issue is the possible lack of fire team leader, meaning one player could grief you and there would be no way to kick them, on the other hand, you could always invite the others to a new session. I see no reason why they couldn't add a separate option for matchmaking on normal, or have a built in system where you could mark the fire team as looking for player, and others could be added if they selected the option. That way you'd still have a leader, you could get a player to fill out a team, without losing the ability to close the fire team later if you want to invite a friend. This is sorely needed, as so few more players even attempt the raids, when they are some of the best content, with some of the best loot. There is no reason to think that adding this feature would dumb down the raids, players would learn firsthand the disadvantages of playing with randoms, and recognize when certain sections required more coordination. And once they see some of the content, I think they would be motivated to form their own groups for more serious attempts, but this gives you the option to get your feet wet, and find people to play with.

          • Guess I've been fortunate enough not to have to raid with random's. Honestly think it will be a bad idea ,most of the reasons are posted below by others, but if it's optional I could really care less. My one fear is the fact that they don't make it optional like the heroic strikes, which absolutely should've been optional.

          • All raid should have it. Even lfg site wont guarantee anything. I dont have any trouble matchmaking with other players playing incursion on division. If light level gap is the problem then make the matchmaking system smarter or add features to set requiremens, etc. Having to go to other site to find people is ridicilous for me this activity should stay within the game.
