Why am I so inconsistent in crucible?

I'm getting really frustrated. This is why.... Sometimes, I have really good matches. For instance, about an hour ago, I went 24 and 9 in a control match on bannerfall, with over 5,000 points(if your able to, check the stats. Noone was anywhere near me). To alot of you, that's probably no big deal. But if you look at my k/d, it's a hell of an accomplishment. The next match though...not so good. And I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. In the match on bannerfall, I was tearing it up with imago loop and conspiracy theory with a few supers sprinkled in. The next match, I had to keep trying different guns and I was getting destroyed, but the opposing team wasn't much different in skill than the opposing team in the bannerfall match. Can anyone give me some good crucible tips besides "Git gud scrub"? I really want to get my k/d to 1.0. I'm tired of not helping my teams. Edit: Thanks for the replies! One of my biggest problems has been running off solo in clash matches, and always capturing zones in control by myself instead of staying with the team. So, from now on, I need to make it a point not to do that. I need to stop switching weapons just because I get killed alot too. I'm not gonna get better with a gun if I don't keep practicing with it. I just need to play smarter. One question...is rumble a good mode for someone like me to practice on? It's every man for himself after all :) thanks again!

  • I suspect you are doing nothing wrong, just a victim of circumstance. BungiVision does not have Regional Dedicated Host Servers. A Bungie server selects one Console as game host, passes game control to it and then all traffic flows back and forth from this Game host to everyone else. When the game is over, the Bungie servers tabulate the stats, proclaim the winner and move on to selecting the next host. If you get picked as host, you have host advantage and you can become a nearly unkillable god in the game, as everyone lags relative to you. People with little lag that are near you will not notice this much, but people in different parts of the world may be dramatically affected by whom is host and how reliable their internet connection is. Additionally the host could do all manner of IP Exploits (i.e. lag switching, localized targeted DOS etc.) to make other peoples game a living hell and tip the odds in their favor (which is what Trials is all about). This is why your game is inconsistent, you might be host in one game, close to the host so that lag is minimal in the next, or the host in the next game may be lagging badly relative to you. As an example, a year ago or so, I played 3 matches in a row during Iron Banner with the same people in the teams. The first game I had my usual K:D of 0.9, the second game I had a K:D of 7.3 (29 kills 4 deaths) and the third game I couldn't hit the broad side of barn with a nuclear weapon and a K:D of 0.1. The first game was typical and I was reasonably close (lag wise) to the host. The second game I was probably picked as host and the people I played against were lagging all over the place and barely moving - so I killed them easily. The third game one of the people that were lagging relative to me that I beat the crap out of was picked as host, and they just beat me into the dirt. Same people in all 3 matches, but dramatically different game play because of whom was picked as host. 99% of this inconsistency would be addressed if BungiVision had Regional Dedicated Host Servers and the only lag limits would be how close you are (ping time routing wise) to the regional host server in your area. But that would involve them spending the money to have servers so your game experience is more repeatable and it becomes a game of skill, rather than lag chance. HTH..

  • The trick is to use The classic Destiny strategy and blame everyone and everything except yourself! Refuse to acknowledge gaps in your skill, never focus on them and try to improve, and most importantly never ever be gracious in defeat! Follow these tried and true methods and you'll be a legend in your own lunchtime! And -blam!- any -blam!- that says otherwise!

    • "We don't want you to win all of your games, we don't even want you to win most of your games, we want you to win closer to half your games" Either in a weekly update or a Crucible Radio episode, a dev from bungie said that verbatim. As far as I can understand, when you do better than your average, the game puts you into a higher skill bracket so that you do worse. Also when you have somewhat high stats, the game will give you opponents slightly below your skill level & teammates who are below the skill level of your opponents. The link above is what I discovered after playing a solo game in skirmish. My elo being higher than the rest of the lobby at 1400, my teammates both at 1100, & my opponents at 1300 & 1200.

    • The general state of the connections in the lobby can be a big factor. Something else I've noticed personally is that if I have a specific bounty (gun types or throwing knife kills or something) I'll focus on that to the point that I'm playing like a total idiot and trying to do that thing in every situation. Which is the fast track to the bottom of the board!

    • You and me both. One minute I'm runnin' Merciless medals left and right, the next I'm staring at nothing but the words "Guardian Down" the whole match. It sucks that winning the Crucible is RNG in itself. >_>

    • I stay consistent by having one weapon a week. It may be shaky in the first games, but the rest of the week is fine! ~TheGreatNike

    • For every game I win and go positive 2.0+ I swear I lose the next five. I still go positive usually but I think SBMM hates me.

      • i definitely recommend rumble it will be hard at first but at first My kd was similar to yours and so i played rumble for a good year then i slowly go better( just go on destinytracker, you can see my kd has been increasing every month). slowly i got into watching streamers and youtubers play competitive( this is optional as alot of ppl Dont' like doing this but is definitely helped me) this led me into doing sweats and now im a competitive player who trys to do sweats almost daily. so if u want to improve just start with rumble, if i can do it anyone can.good luck

          • Find a loadout you like playing and stick with it. You will see a gradual increase in your performance. Unfortunately you will always have matches where you get rekt.

Your not inconsistent its just the game, you have bad games and good games, depending on how well developed your style of play is compared to how well developed you opponents style of play is, you can better yourself and make it MORE consistent by simply improving your play style and playing smarter.

          • Im also a pretty inconsistent player but I feel like its not always me. If you have a bad team, you will have a much harder time. The enemies will spam the Supers and I love it when they grab double heavy. On the other hand we have SBMM. When Im really good in a few lobbies I get in a lobby with a bunch of full party tryhards and all fun is gone. Dont get me wrong I like competition but I dont wanna drown in sweat. And finally I think there are moments where Im just really concentrated and focused and sometimes I just want a fast casual Crucible match. Of course I will perform different. But sometimes Its just bad luck. You join late, BOOM Truth Rocket to the face. You respawn, Golden Gun. You respawn again you run around a corner, you Shotgun melee, for some reason your Shotgun didnt do any dmg and boom Fist of Panic. This is the Moment where I just leave to do something else, before I destroy my controller lol

          • It is always situational. The best way to go about this is to delegate another player as your "battle buddy" as soon as you start the match, unless if you decide to go solo. You might not get as many kills, but you will help out in assists and be less likely to be killed with your pal nearby. Remember, you have a team at your disposal. Whether you use them to watch your back or act as meat shields is all up to you.

          • There is a stupid system put in by bungie that makes it so you win one game, then lose the next, then win and so on. They made it like this so that bad players win matches also.

One reason is your team. It's not always the opposing team. If your team is really bad, they will die easily, which lets the opposing team gain territory more easily, and you will find yourself with enemies coming from every direction, rushing, being very aggressive, etc. When this happens it's hard to have a good match. You just have to become very passive.

            • In the same boat with you man! I have some rounds when I'm around 2.0 and 3.0 and then I drop down to .74! I do not Get the shit! And don't get me started with teams. I can't tell you how many times the round starts 4 vs 6. And the 2 people that our team is missing finally join after the game is basically over, because now the team is down by 4K...... Hate that shit bru
