Mystery: Vault of Glass 3 and why it scares me
A starfield. The stars swing slowly across the Ghost's field of view, just darkness and the blazing fury of distant suns as the Ghost tumbles through empty space. Hours of this before, with a wash of power, a huge convoy of ships drops into reality from warp. A convoy of Guardian craft, hundreds strong. Ships of all sizes and shapes can be seen, from venerable craft that have been salvaged from the Golden Age through to City designs to vessels that have yet to emerge from the Shipwright's hangars. The ships are battle-scarred. Many are barely spaceworthy. As warp drives wind down several seem to lose power and begin to drift. Some of the largest craft bear imagery familiar to frequent visitors to the tower: Dead Orbit symbols, the simple icon of the Vanguard. The New Monarchy and Future War Cult as well, though fewer examples can be seen. Others bears symbols never seen in the Tower to date. Every single ship, from the largest cruiser to the smallest personal craft, carries shards of stone, remnants of the City and the Tower. Banners too, tattered and worn from entering and leaving warp. The fleet is only visible for a few breaths, less than a minute. Then, with a massive flash of light, the fleet jumps on. The craft that have lost power are left behind, spinning and whirling away from the etheric wake of their powered fellows. The Ghost spins on, and soon enough only stars fill its field of view until the fragment ends.
These are Guardian ships. They never run (except Phobos), but here they are... here they all are. Running away from something. Each are carrying shards of the City, of the Traveler. The Last City has been destroyed and these are the last humans left. What destroyed the city? "Don't let them find you."

  • That card is very pro-Dead Orbit. It's saying they were right, and because of them we've got somewhere to escape to. Some remnants of FWC and New Monarchy are there, what was left of them after we stayed to fight and attempt to reclaim what was ours. But they lost. That's how I read that card anyway. And it's only one future, one future that we know will not come to pass, because Dead Orbit are not right. Future War Cult is our only salvation.

    • Future War Cult's Plan: Fight the everlasting battle, use everything and anything to live, or Die trying. New Monarchy's Plan: Argue over politics and Die. (Literally, what else are they doing? Besides 'claiming' to solely defend the City.) Dead Orbit's Plan: Run away, spend all resources running around, and Die from the Darkness anyway.

I guess it's a warning of what happens if we fail. But to be honest there are not that many threats left. Splicers: I give them a month. Fallen: to decimated to attack, Vex: don't seem to busy or interested right now, Hive: maybe Oryx's sisters but that's it. Cabal: may attack or cut their losses and leave (doubt it) The Darkness maybe?: It's taking its sweet time getting here and the traveler wasn't interested in sticking around the last time it showed up.

            • I think something is missing in all these conversations about which faction has the correct battle plan.
it's never NM
In all the visions that FWC has seen they always see war and they always see us loose that war at some point, so I want to know what the X factor is that has kept our timeline on the winning side. It certainly isn't the guardians because they exist in all of them, nor the Traveler. It would be pretty easy to say the player character, but I feel like that's too easy. Point is, there is something that we don't about that has spared us from that one bad day that turns the city into a crater.

            • They dont have shards pf the Traveler with them... Actually for me that's an important point. It means whatever happened, the Traveler stayed. So I would say most of humanity stayed too. But the majority of ships are from Dead Orbit and the Vanguard. I strongly believe this is the full Dead Orbit fleet, since most of the ships bear Dead Orbit insignia with some ships onnloan or goven to them by the Vanguard. The other faction ships eithet are stolen or some Guardians switched at the last second, hence their small number. Whethe ror not they are running from something or just finally setting out is not clear but I'm leaning on them running away. I think the Darkness comes, and Dead Orbit finds their opportune time to leave. Some Future War Cult followers succumb to the fear of the Darkness and see this as a chance to escape; they no longer believe we can fight it. Some New Monarchy followers do the same, no longer believing that they can make their Golden age here anymore. But this is some time in the future.

                  • Potential future seen beyond the veil by a ghost sent by the FWC through a re-made golden age device because human minds couldn't grasp the concepts they saw. Being a VoG card, my thoughts are that the ghost saw the potential future had we failed in there and the Black Garden and the Progeny successfully drew forth Time's Conflux.

It's the reason the FWC exists.
RECORD 343-CHASM-7891 Forty-seven human subjects; eleven report timelines in which the Darkness has already prevailed, thirteen report timelines in which the City has fallen. Twenty-three babbled madness. Hopeless. Trapped.
almost all futures they've seen thus far have been grim. The one constant they find in each timeline is war. And so they've been preparing for a future war ever since. To us we seem to have hope and the future is looking up. But I can almost guarantee that's what those timelines thought too...

                        • If this goes along the whole possibility of the traveler being evil, maybe this is after we find out the truth and we finally fight back against the traveler and somehow lose the city to it or our enemies. Knowing this truth we have a new motivation and find another bondoned outpost on another nearby planet or moon. This however does not lead to our downfall.

                        • Our whole thing is defying the known possible timelines. The Stranger comes from a timeline (probably that one) where humanity is in a losing war. She came back to try and find that one Guardian (us) who could hopefully change all of that. The future in that Grimoire card is only a possibility, not a guarantee.

                        • I wouldn't say running, rather seemed resigned to the same fate as the fallen, scavenging and moving on, this is either a potential reality or a reality that thats has happened and not of our own.
