Into the Hellmouth, Part 39: Omnigul's Birth

Hello, everyone, here's Part 39 of Into the Hellmouth! Sorry to keep you waiting, but I was in no-Internet-land for the past few days! In any case, as usual, if you like it, give it a bump, and I'll get more out soon. Here's Part 38 if you missed it, and if you're looking for a different chapter, here's the Master Post! Stay classy, Guardians! The Eyes waited in the summoning caverns. Their companions began to arrive a few moments later. First came the Hand. He was a knight, whose sword had been sharpened by millennia of combat. He had been among the first to serve Crota, and had even lead an assault on the war moon of Savathûn. Then came the Heart. A wizard, whose cunning was rivaled by none. Her legacy was not one of offspring sired, but of foes slain and worlds destroyed and enemies betrayed. They Eyes acknowledged their presence. “We welcome you,” they said in unison. “Why have you summoned us?” asked the Hand. “You indicated it was a matter of utmost urgency.” “Some time ago, six of the Traveler’s servants entered the Throne World,” said an Eye. “Of those, Five remain. They are in the process of crossing the bridge to the throne of our master.” The Heart hissed. “And what is your opinion on the situation?” she asked. “Can we not defeat them?” “Verok is dead,” said the second Eye. “Killed by these servants. To deal with them, we must hasten our plans.” “What do you mean?” rasped the Hand. “Omnigul,” said the first Eye. “We must ready the Will to expunge these servants before they kill our master.” The Hand snorted. “We had not yet planned to raise the Will,” he said. “Nor should we need to.” “If we rush the process, she will experience much pain,” agreed the wizard. “The transition to wizard takes years under ideal circumstances. To rush the changes may prove fatal.” “We had not thought you sentimental,” snarled the second Eye. “Not sentimental, only practical,” the Heart replied. “What we create could easily become an abomination.” “A risk we must take,” said the first Eye. “Bring forth the thrall, Heart. If you wish to see Crota’s will done, then you will birth Omnigul. Now.” The Heart snarled, but conceded. She vanished around a corner for a moment, and then returned, leading a thrall. “Here it is,” she said. She petted the thrall on it’s bare scalp. “Strange to think that you should be the one to lead us. Strange to think that we should need you.” They lead the thrall to a ritual platform, flanked by several other wizards. The Heart took her place at the head, and then nodded to the Eyes and the Hand, who stepped back. The Heart closed her eyes, and began to chant. Soon, the other wizards joined her, and sang a spell. A spell of changing, a spell of power. A spell of knowing, a spell of life and not-life, and death and not-death. The thrall began to screech as it’s frame was reformed, eyes sprouting in it’s skull, claws shortening, body growing. Change. The change that all thrall sought - the change from weak, screeching Hivespawn to acolyte. Its worm would grow, yes. It would feed it on the power of the enemies, until it one-day grew to command the power of the Darkness in the form of a wizard or knight - it knew not which. However, the change did not end there. It’s body began to lengthen further, the sexless form gradually taking on the guise of a wizard. The thrall began to screech with pain, body lengthening, bone cracking and healing. All it knew was pain. Pain, pain, pain, more pain than it had ever known, more pain that it ever would know. The screams of Omnigul echoed through the caverns of Crota’s throne world. * * * The screams seemed to die down for a moment, and the Guardians began to advance on the doorway, when Eriana stopped them. “Wait,” she said. “Before we go, we should make a map.” “Why?” Sai asked. “Because when we’re done here, I want to be able to find my way back out,” she replied. “Ghost?” Her ghost created a holographic map on the ground before them. “I’ve been keeping track of our location, and scanning key landmarks along the way,” it said proudly. “This is as accurate a map as I could get. “Okay, so this is where we are now,” Eriana said, pointing to the far end of the hologram. “And this is where we started.” She pointed to the beginning of the map. “The Stills,” Toland said. The group looked up at him. The old warlock shrugged. “It seems as appropriate a name as any,” he said. “Nothing but death there. Nothing but, cold, still, death.” Eriana nodded uneasily. “Okay,” she said. They went about naming the rest of the map, when the screams began to once again increase in volume. Eris shuddered. “Those screams,” Omar grimaced. “And I was just starting to tune them out,” he said. Toland nodded. “It has been told that with these screams another spawn is awakened, birthed in the name of the god it holds,” he said. Sai blinked. “Crota,” she said. “I am afraid so,” Toland said. “They call this one Omnigul, mother of the spawn. “How do you—?” Sai began, and then waved her hand. “I'd rather not know.” Toland turned in the direction of the screams. “Commands, echoed through the dark, fetid caverns—orders carried out with grinding stone and squeaking claw, skittering thrall and blade against bone.” Omar threw his hands up, and sighed. “Well, now he's on a roll.” Eriana pounded the ground with frustration. “I hear them, even when I don’t,” she growled. “I will tear this Omnigul's throat out.” Toland smiled. “If you were to do so, our work here would be done. Without a Will to raise its army and herald its ascendance, there is no Crota to fear, at least here and now.” Eris nodded “Then we follow the screams,” she said. And without another word, she and Toland walked towards the doors. And, after a moment’s hesitation, the other Guardians followed.
