For those with "OP" internet

Hi everyone, I'm looking to compare notes with some of you guys that actually have good internet. Here is my issue. I have a cable connection from a well-known ISP. Let's just say the name of my ISP rhymes with Cumcast. I have insane upload and download speeds that have been fantastic for over a decade. I have never, ever had the lag issues I see in Destiny. I know about p2p and why it's BS and has been since about 1994. My issue is this: WHEN I RED BAR! Like wtf? I don't experience lag in other games, I stream movies on multiple devices, I download large files and all kinds of crap. I never have problems anywhere but Destiny. I've had technicians come to my residence numerous times, replaced my ISP provided hardware with my own, and so on. If you can think of a problem, I've probably thought of it and addressed it twice at least. I even turn off ALL devices on my connection and sometimes have a red bar. I'm not throttled it seems and it's almost as if my good connection HURTS me in Destiny. So I'm wondering, how many of you have BEAST connections only to still be a f'n red bar warrior at times? I'd like to hear from some others with knowledge and experience in gaming and internet similar to my own. TL;DR Do you have an awesome internet connection and still become an occasional red bar in Destiny? Thanks for reading!!😎 EDIT: I am well versed in port forwarding and other far more advanced networking concepts. I was CISCO certified for two years, but it was about 8 years ago. Yes, I forgot how to subnet and have almost forgotten everything about the OSI 7 Layer model. Suffice it to say, I know what I'm doing with simple residential/mass market routers, switches, and modems.

This is me. I'm using xfinity and paying for the 150 mega package and the tests come back decent, but the lag spikes are unbearable. I'm only moderately savvy with networking however. Can I lock down a certain IP address and use only that? I use a patch cable and never use the wifi for gaming.

If you were truly cisco certified at any point in time you would not have made this post.

        • Since you have good internet, you're probably made host and in return you get to carry all the people with slow internet. Really hope Destiny 2 gets rid of p2p.

I have the same. Xfinity. Great connecting speed, but still will go red or yellow bar from time to time. It's gotta be on Bungie's end 'cause I have it connected through Ethernet and everything. And I've read many other stories from those in the forums with the best connections who all still go red bar in the game every once in a while. With the shitty p2p servers in this game, having a good connection speed doesn't seem to make much of a difference other than lagging a little less often.

        • It isn't your connection. It is all the connections between you and your host that matters.

        • A buddy of mine just upgraded from ATT back to cox internet and he still has connection issues at times. My connection is a solid 50 mb amd sometimes I red bar too. The thing is, I know enough people that experience connection issues while playing destiny but only destiny. It doesn't matter if their connection is weak or strong. They only have issues from destiny.

        • It's definitely not your fault. It happens to everyone. My internet is amazing but once in a while I red bar for absolutely no reason. You're not doing anything wrong on your side, the red bar is purely on Bungies side

It's not your internet at fault , it's a result of SBMM and peer to peer networking , and latency derived from the amount of HOPS it takes to reach the p2p host. Say you are connecting with folks from all around the world in match , you will be dealing with slow/maxed out backbone network routers, undersea cables , players who's Isp maybe be throttling traffic. It's like bringing your Porsche into a race where everyone's driving skodas, and the pace car is a winabaygo. The red bar is the ping time to a crappy host in a jungle camp somewhere

            • I have a 1gb connection and I get a 7-8 ping when I ping Seattle, but I live in Alaska. I only get lag when I play with or against people from other countries. I think the reason you don't get lag on other games is because most not-so-populated games don't try and implement something like SBMM; something that should only exist on well populated games.

                • It is nothing to do with your connection. The times you are red-bar are times when you are not the host, and the host has a crappy connection to you. When I find myself in this position I leave the lobby and start again. Sometimes I'll get 5 or 6 games in before red-bars start, and then they multiply.

                • Pretty sure it's not your isp...we have slime warner and clock 200 mbps down on our laptops. Costs a few bucks but it's worth it. Take a look at some of the articles on the web regarding PS4 Ethernet speeds. Looks like the best we'll see is 42 mbps down even under the best conditions, could be a lot better but Sony throttles it down for "network stability". Add P2P networking to the mix and everybody is going to lag from time to time. One thing I haven't seen mentioned on the forums; isn't gameplay on Sony's servers, not Bungie's?

                    • Here's what to do: Buy a Netduma router, set geo-filter to about 50 miles radius and a ping assist of 50ms. Although manipulating network is against Bungie ToS, in the past they've promoted streamers that actively claim to use and are sponsored by Netduma, so a ban is unlikely.

Console do have speed cap right? So basically you don't really need crazy up/download speed! 20-30 should be more than enough! You should be fine, as long as you are wired and not sharing your network while you play.
