Skill based matchmaking is fine. People exaggerate the amount of lag. They just want to blame someone other than themselves for their poor gameplay. I guarantee that the same people will still be crying foul if they change to CBMM. They won't know what to do once they start playing people that are much better than they are. Is there lag? Yes, occasionally. Is it game breaking? Rarely.

  • Based on every game I've played since the most recent changes were dropped, the SBMM algorithm is completely and utterly broken. While lag might not be "game breaking", it is significant contributor to frustration and the end result of match ups.. Explain the number of times I've hammered a charging guardian with consistent headshots only to be instakilled by their melee while their health bar doesn't budge? Magic bullets? Or the huge number of times a guardian will teleport and end up with a shotty kill? There have even been a few times where repeated melees and shottys on a stationary guardian have had absolutely no effect. The effect on the gameplay and results is enormous. I don't mind playing better players. But I do mind playing against top ranked players and impossible lag effects. The concept of PVP should be to match players within a skill range to maximise player enjoyment, engagement, and challenge. Impossible matchups achieve exactly the opposite. SBMM needs a complete rework. It should NEVER match players / fireteams at different ends of the spectrum, or if it does they should have a new match mode called SlaughterHouse. CBMM needs to be improved, but it's difficult to know exactly how much can be done here based on the vagaries of the internet and the likelihood that there are players out there deliberately manipulating lag effects.

Fair enough. Ultimately, the control "test" MM settings were unsuccessful. The same amount of lag, but a larger gap in player skill within each game. I'm not complaining, but it just seems more frustrating for the masses. I don't get it. The average player will suffer the more with CBMM.

  • Agreed pure CBMM would not work either. It's a tough problem to solve, and unfortunately recent changes seem to have made the situation worse for many players rather than better.

  • Yeah. They should filter players by connection, and then filter them by skill. The matchmaking times could become excessive though. It's going to piss some people off no matter what.

MM times are fairly bad right now, worse since recent changes. I see a lot of players dropping out due to wait time in MM. Perhaps an option might be to allow players to register for a MM game asynchronously, then have the game pull the players together when MM has completed in the background. At least that way players could do lightweight activities such as Patrol or gear management etc whilst waiting for a matchmade game to commence. This might be something like the way dynamic fireteam invitations happen. I guess for now we need to soldier on (and accept the lag and being cannon fodder for those super good players :)
