The Truth about SBMM in Destiny: How it affects the community

After researching stats / testing out PVP on a new account, simply turning SBMM off isn't the answer. Far more people will be hurt by the change than we think. I'm not saying every gaming being ultra competitive is right either.... but we need to look a the greater good instead of what is best for the top players.

  • I would be fine with SBMM if it didn't mess up the connection so much that is the reason I would much rather have CBMM

  • Wait a second....if i'm correct (which i dont know actually) this skill based thing meant: you will play against players that are on the same level as you meaning, if your k/d is 1.0 you will go against players who have a k/d of 0.9 up to 1.3 (approxamitley) .......so.....WHATS THE PROBLEM!? Dont get me wrong but i like competition so i'd rather fight against equal skilled players or higher than against low level players cause 1. I dont like to annoy or irritate noobs by killing them easy (because you will receive hate messages)....2.whats the point of playing if you keep going against less skilled players? Doesn't that become like boring....? I have NO problem with this, deal with it kid the world is harsh...😂

    • I think SBMM is just something for the community to blame, like how everyone was blaming lagswitching not too long ago. People just like to copy what other people say. Just like how they use guns other people say are op, even though they're not.

      • I am not sure why they cannot just have 2 game modes, competitive and casual. In competitive you have a K/D and accumulate stats and in casual you do not. In both game modes you can receive rewards and finish quests. Offer different gear and weapons or emblems and shaders for each and be done with it.

      • Great commentary. Crucible is now bearable for me. I'm nearly 1.0 and it's been a long climb. Lag has always been an issue in pvp, so, stop whining like this is a new thing, people. smh.

      • Crucible was fun up until just before TTK was released. Now, it's simply no fun. I wonder if my opinion falls in line with the switching from connect base to skill base?

        • He actually makes decent content mostly. And he's a naturally funny personality. Unfortunately, he sometimes ruins this by going overboard a lot of the time, and crosses a fine line between cringeworthy and plain bad. Like his mtash cries video...jesus that is so false and cringey i could barely watch it. Then theres his begging vids. But when the vids are natural they are good.

        • Nice vid, plenty of good thoughts. I'm one of those 0.9-1.0 players to have improved a LOT under SBMM. I've said before, I'm in favour of SBMM, though I agree with you that separate ranked / unranked playlists is a good idea. The problem I have is that at the same time SBMM came in, the lag got way worse. I'm not qualified to opine on why that was, but from my experience it was like night and day. And I have a 1gb up / down connection with maybe 8ms latency by the time I get to the PS4. So my issue isn't with SBMM, it's with the lag that comes with it 50% of the time. If they sorted the lag (they don't have to remove it, just make it consistent so I can adjust) then I honestly think crucible would be pretty much as perfect as it's going to get in Destiny 1. Just my opinion, of course!

          • I used to be complete and utter shit at this game. Then I played against some really good players. I noticed what they were doing. I adapted and started trying the same stuff. Now, I'm sitting at a 1.26 and still rising. Playing against the best will make you learn from the best.

              My friend has a 0.64 kd and gets matched up against 2.0+ players all day when he's plays solo ... Sbmm ? He's never been above 1.0 Edit : so did you check time played also ? Because that could change everything not just kd or win loss because combats rating it the skill potion of sbmm

            • Wow. Didn't expect that. I came here to prove that SBMM is necessary to protect me from, um, you. But you already know! It isn't fun when you smack me around like a rag doll. It isn't fun when I have absolutely no clue how I died, and that happens 20 times in a game. --- I see another solution though. Have two Crucibles. One should be run by Shaxx, the other Arcite 99-40. When you click on Crucible, it should take you to a screen that asks who you want for a handler, Arcite or Shaxx. If you choose Arcite, you get CBMM. If you choose Shaxx, you get SBMM. Also, I think it would be funny to hear Arcite try to copy Shaxx. "This is Am...a...zing!"

            • We need SBMM because some decent teams will never stand a chance against the other team. Without SBMM, a below average team will be paired up with an Amazing team, and they'll get annihilated. With SBMM, the teams will be based on how good the players are, so the fight will be more balanced and both teams have equal opportunity to win.

              • They could take a page from Reach. The player gets to set his own search criteria; skill, connection, or language. Then they could even set their own mood of the game; rowdy, casual, etc. AND they could vote on maps.... It was perfect.

                • I watched as long as I could... If you want to get better at something, you play with people that are better than you, and worse than you. Coach and be coached. It takes time and effort to 'git gud' How do you expect lower tier players, who aren't near the top 5% to be able to get to the lighthouse, if the only time they play top tier players is ToO? It's a canned experience now...it's absolutely disgusting where this game is headed as far as PVP is concerned. Bungie is trying to provide a casual friendly PVP environment where casuals artificially have the same experience as a group of highly skilled players. Everybody wins (apparently) Roping in people who take the time to acquire the best weapons, gear and skillsets, and making sure they never come across those who don't, at the cost of connection quality is really, really bad. (1.0KD)

                  • Started up Destiny again after almost a week. Wanted to do the crucible weekly bounties. Had everything done, just needed 1 elimination win. 3 or 4 tries later I went offline. Wake me up when normal people start playing the game again, I'm not in the mood to play sweats game after game. Even people that use Y1 Last Word (so they drop in light, to make it harder on themselves? Seriously?)

                      • Id prefer better connections but i do like the more competitive matches no matter the out come. When teams are close in score the last few minutes is more enjoyable to me.

                      • Sounds like a lot of butt hurt people. The hard truth hurts sometimes. All it needs is a ranking system to work properly. But I agree it needs to stay. No more easy button for the top level players.
