The Truth about SBMM in Destiny: How it affects the community

After researching stats / testing out PVP on a new account, simply turning SBMM off isn't the answer. Far more people will be hurt by the change than we think. I'm not saying every gaming being ultra competitive is right either.... but we need to look a the greater good instead of what is best for the top players.

  • It honestly ruins the fun, look at all the people complaining. How much people improve or do better, it still makes people want to sell their discs and move over to overwatch(which you can actually mess around on and have fun on).

    • I'd rather get slaughtered by better players than get melted in a split second by some lagging red bar player who is based about 1000 miles from me.Local matchmaking is what's needed but I would settle for connection based.

When did Destiny become competitive? Until I see an actual "tournament" with this game.... It'll always be considered a game for casuals. And for you basement dwellers who believe otherwise.... Don't hyperventilate by responding to me because I could care less what you have to say.

Idgaf about them, im sick of lagged out games bro. Not only that they are artificially making it so everyone's kd approaches 1 with a 50/50 win loss ratio They've come right out and said it Also, given all the shady stupid shit they do and from my own personal experiences I would not be surprised if their backdoor adjustments went as far as lowering damage thresholds and damage output because I've been in lobbys where you can not get a kill and the opposing team is destroying you even though last game they got stomped on, or half the team was previously on your team and was horribile, but suddenly they're gods when they're against you? Or 1 day an ar or pulse does work but the next day it's totally impotent That's a little tinfoil hat'ish, but i really feel that way sometimes, like they're pulling strings behind the scenes sometimes A p2p network should be totally connection based imo

    • Wow, I'm actually surprised that you made this video. You missed the main reason most players have an issue with SBMM. If I pay $50+ for a video game, I expect it to function properly. Most online games experience lag at some point in time but the developers of those games are not directly introducing connectivity issues. By forcing SBMM, Bungie is negatively impacting the online experience for a large portion of their player base. If you don't have the proper networking infrastructure to support SBMM, don't force it.... Also, since you mentioned lower skilled players that are having a good time, what about the lower skilled players who quit because they can no longer play with their friends/relatives?

      • This video is nothing but propaganda. 10 minute video, and he didnt mention lag? Ridiculous, esp for a top tier player. I am an average player, all I want is the enemy to be on the left... when my radar says his on the left. I want my radar to light red when I can see an enemy in front of me. I dont want the guy in front of me, shooting me in the back.

        • SBMM is trash. When a game that already has shit hit detection trumps skill based matchmaking over connection, it makes the experience that much worse. It needs to be connection based, what it is now isn't working and hasn't been working for a while.

            • Ranked playlist • Social playlist -> Problem solved. We don't need to look at any greater good. This is a game, and should be enjoyable for EVERYBODY, not just the "weaker"; "average", or "top" players. You're 100% right by saying: "There's not one solution that can cater to all players."; Perhaps multiple solutions then? Hence ranked and social playlists. "But then the K/D's and statistics will be unreliable!" Bungie has never cared for the top ranking players, or veterans of the game; they've proven that multiple times already. They cater to the casual, and the casual does not care for statistics. SBMM has destroyed the fun of crucible for the majority; has twisted the meta into a corner snipe face-off; and has made it impossible for many people to play competitively aside their(higher-skilled) friends. No excuse is valid for this failed attempt at a better matchmaking system.

              • Answer is still the same. -blam!- SBMM and change it what it was in good old days and add ranked playlist. Problem solved. Simple and easy. EVERY PvP game needs a social and a ranked playlist. How bungie cant understand it after being so succesfull with Halo is just amazing. Retards. They all went full retard with Destiny.

                • The problem with SBMM is it doesn't work on a P2P platform, where it effectively reduces lag. If we were on dedicated servers then that would be a better discussion and we can talk coding is too/less restrictive. The game is flawed from a design perspective. Destiny was first advertised as a PVE game with PVP being an "other activity" from the original marketing. I honestly don't think they envisioned that PVP would be as successful and popular as it is now. You need to cater to all markets and I get that, but how do you do it in its current state of design that is fair to all skill levels? Simple answer you can't. Even with ranked playlists you are still going to get a ranked player or team that is in another country. It is going to happen and when it does you can throw SBMM and CBMM out the window. LBMM is all that you have. And he who lags last usually wins.

                  • Once again, easy solution. Two options. Ranked Unranked Ranked = SBMM unranked = CBMM Just look at counter strikes success with this. Obvious and easy fix.

Is the greater good keeping the crucible in a state where nearly every match is an inconsistent lag fest ? I understand that some people don't have lag issues, and some people state they didn't have them during year one, but there are some of us who have experienced lag due to poor matchmaking since day one in the majority of the matches we play. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying every match has been unplayable, i'm saying the connection is consistently inconsistent. Bungie has stated that they've always had SBMM in the game which doesn't surprise me one bit since the same problems have occured since day one, getting matched with players that aren't even on the same continent, and lagging players becoming borderline invincible. Often enough even the players who have a "80% full green bar" sponge some of your bullets. The bullet sponging has more to do with how the game deals with the situations where there is a lot of latency, but if the matchmaking did a better job in minimizing the lag this wouldn't be such a big problem. During the time Destiny has been out i have lived in two different cities and used three different service providers to connect to the internet, the first two were high speed cable lines, and at the moment i'm on fiber optic. The console has always been wired, and has always been either directly connected to a modem or in a DMZ. All three service providers gave me a good connection to the internet, no packet loss, low jitter, and low pings when testing to different servers in the region. SBMM needs to be removed, not revised back to year one, but removed entirely. The game needs regional, connection based matchmaking so that it could function properly.

I do not understand your argument while it does make sense on paper think about it like this when 2 players shoot each other at the same time connection will determine who wins that gunfight not skill specially on a game without dedicated servers, you cannot flank to outsmart your opponents because the radar will always tell you where they are and the game is not balanced enough for skill to be involved. One player will have an advantage over another player due the how good or bad the connection is to the lobby. Players like you who run netduma will rarely run into laggy players because you can control who gets to connect to you but what about the rest of us? I have asked a buddy of mine who uses netduma to turn off the filter and guess what, it connects us to players with our skill level...........from across the ocean!!!!!!! And due to latency the matches are laggy and unplayable so where does skill come into play if i cannot dmg red bars or if other players see me 1-2 secs before i see them due to lag? Defending sbmm while running a netduma? Gtfo lol

                    • The biggest obstacle to enjoying playing Crucible isn't the skill gap, it's the quality of connection. Lag ruins everything, including KD, so it becomes an inaccurate gauge of the type of person who is playing. With a solid connection against similarly levelled players I (and I imagine most others) can satisfy my sense of accomplishment, win or lose. There are extremes of course: lobbies full of under-levelled or inexperienced players, which skews the result, similarly on a Saturday night with ToO cancelled, trying to play skirmish against top level players and getting thrashed; but that's ok. That is a consistent base. With a laggy connection (far more common) I have no answer to the teleporting, indestructible, player who regardless of skill, cannot be beaten and goes 43-0.

                    • Is this guy for real? "We want to be able to jump and play a randomly generated lobby. We might stomp, we might get stomped" Uhhh.....that's what we all have been saying on the matter. Then goes on to talk about a competitive playlist. Trials of Osiris is Fri-Tue. ToO- SBMM (based on wins) Crucible- CBMM.

                    • I agree in some ways however as a lower tier player myself I would rather not have sbmm. I enjoy playing crucible with my friends who are much better players than me. This usually means I am matched against players who are much better than me. Getting stomped one game after another really isn't much fun. It basically means that I don't play crucible with my friends. Which means I rarely play crucible. When I play on my own I am matched against players with a similar k/d and I quite often have a positive k/d ratio. But you know what. I actually want to play with my friends, against good connections with random opponents. I don't want to have to give up playing with my friends just because bungie wants to make every match a try hard match.

This guy is dying to be noticed with all his videos. He wishes he was Krafty or hovey but honestly he's just annoying. His stream and videos are garbage. He's boring too and he's not even funny even tho he tries so desperately to be. The simple fact he has to let everyone know who he is in his screen name says it all. Attention seeking kid with no real life friends.

                      • Hey, ShillTashed, You didn't address the lag once in your video. SBMM breaks the dwindling player base into even smaller chunks, causing latency as we have to go further to find opponents. Nor did you mention the awful things that happen when a skilled player plays with unskilled friends. The most skilled players ELO is taken into consideration so the unslilled friends get crushed. You only looked at the issue from the perspective of someone who only solo drops 100% of the time. Sorry mtashed. You need to open your eyes. Your research is flawed. Maybe this is why you have 0 likes on this forums post. #rekt
