The Matchmaking Elephant in the Room

I posted this on Reddit earlier this morning and figured it belonged here as well... Back when Vanilla Destiny launched, the debates about the lack of decent matchmaking in most of the PVE activities were frequent and heated. In fact, it was such a common complaint that Bungie eventually added it to the Weekly Heroic Strike back in early 2015. Since then... radio silence on any plans to implement or improve upon matchmaking in a game that relies so heavily on teaming up with others. When the Nightfall was nerfed and players were no longer kicked to orbit, Bungie inexplicably chose not to offer matchmaking yet again and provided no explanation. Third party apps created with no money or support from Bungie or Activation had to pick up the slack and create LFG sites that provided alternate means of teaming up that required players to leave the game and compulsively check their phones like a desperate drunk on Tinder trying to hook-up at 2am on a Saturday. The reason I bring this up once again is because of, your guessed it, The Division. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of everything the Division does. I'd still prefer blasting aliens in the face rather than shooting a man in a backpack with an AK-47 for 50 minutes until he goes down. HOWEVER, can we just talk about how seamless and perfect matchmaking is in The Division? It's available for all missions. It can be initiated via safe-house kiosks, individual player interaction in the world, the in-game map, AND at the entrance of the mission itself. The fact that you can stroll over to a neighborhood, find a mission marker hovering over the area, and receive a prompt asking if you'd like to join other players is so beautifully organic and seamless that it makes Destiny's options to team-up feel like they're from another decade. I know we're in a content drought and a lot of player frustration has shifted to the fact that we've had nothing new for the past 6 months but if there is ONE thing I'd like Bungie to learn from The Division it's that matchmaking should not only be expanded but also integrated into the living world they created. TLDR: Destiny's matchmaking is still a joke. Bungie hasn't talked openly about expanding it in over a year. The Division handles it beautifully and will hopefully encourage them to stop relying on dedicated fans to provide basic functionality that should have been in the game from the start.

  • There should be optional matchmaking for everything. What gets me is there's a strike i have to do for eris but the matchmaking is turned off on it. What genius decided that this needed to be a thing?

  • Optional matchmaking across all activities would be a welcome addition, as would proximity chat for patrol mode.

    • Yep, pisses me off, and if they don't have matchmaking for the new PvE content I probably won't bother with it. It would be a huge disappointment.

    • I couldn't agree more. When I started playing The Division I noticed that right away, even if it's a function I may not use it's still good to know that it's at least an option if none of my friends are online.

    • I have a mighty need for optional match making. I only have 1 person I can play alongside so it would help me greatly

      • In total agreement, i was a year 1 beta player, loved the game and yes it had a bad start and was not quite what people had hoped for but the matchmaking issue has killed alot of players love for destiny, due to the frustration of not getting to play end game content that we all payed for has been a big problem for a long long time. Its a real shame as i enjoyed the game but i stopped in November 2015 due to this issue. But i think its far to late for them to change now and destiny is on its way out because of bungie's stubborn stance. I think the likes of the division and upcoming games like doom will see destiny fall further and further behind. Maybe destiny 2 will address the failures of the first game but im very doubtfull.

      • I agree with everything you said. Chat is another one of Bungie's prejudice that supposedly would not work well (something about people being toxic) that works great in The Division.

I would personally suggest expanding on the Matchmaking Kiosk in the tower idea that's been brought up before. Let if offer 2 options: Quickmatch and Guardian Queue. Quickmatch would be just like it sounds, and likely used more for easier modes such as patrol, heroic strikes, crucible, etc. It would match you with others also looking for quickmatch as fast as possible. Guardian Queue, on the other hand, would put you on a visible list by other players by which they can examine your guardian's gear and etc. and manually send you an invite. That way raiders and harder activity fireteam leaders can pick and choose from the list of what classes with what gear and light lvl they would find acceptable. Even to add in a checkmark list of requirements to automatically hide ineligible players from the list so it's not so expansive would be helpful. Bungie could even make it so that leaving the tower would result in dropping you from the queue you're waiting in.

      • External lfg sites were not necessary. But I agree with most of your statements

      • Elephant in the room? That implies no one was ever talking about it and ignoring it willfully. People have been bitching about since day one.

        • Im generally a solo player with only a few people that i play online with, im also lazy and will only rarely go to an external LFG site. As such ive very rarely done a raid because i donr want to stuff around for an hour while an lfg group assembles. Would be exstatic if optional match making became standard across all activities. There was an idea earlier about a simple match where you got who you got, but i also liked the sound of the kiosk terminal where you could filter what / who your requirements needed.

        • I agree with more matchmaking across activities. Here's a post I made a while back about an idea... [https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/195873574/0/0]link[/url]

        • Honestly all activities should have MM. So those who don't care too much about other players skill levels can just jump into an activity. MM for all activities doesn't preclude your ability to look at LFG sites for better players, in fact I think in game MM would eliminate a lot of the shyt players from LFG sites

        • This is one wanting change thread I can agree with. Improved matchmaking as suggested would be welcomed, and as other posters have said, it would benefit the solo players. I also agree it would be worth the risk of getting a match that fails. Having said this, for the areas that DO currently have matchmaking, there are no unreasonable issues.

        • Last year someone suggested that a kiosk be set up in the Tower for guardians looking to do Nightfall or Raids as an additional option to what is available now. What a great idea but a wasted opportunity that Bungie has failed to implement.

        • I have never done trials but i love iron banner. I don't do raids but i do lots of heroic strikes. Just because there is no matchmaking. However I wouldn't want to force myself onto others who may be more experienced and have better weapons. Optional matchmaking though would allow scrubs like me to get in on the fun. Experienced guys who just wanted to get it done asap would never have to see me. Guys who say this could not work. Please give me one good reason.

          • This game is a broken pos we can no longer pretend that it isn't I've played it for months convince my friend to buy it me him have played every week for a long time and let's face it will always be broken on one way or another they won't ever make it even or equal for players you are paying for a game that they own and they will continue to make it segregated and painstaking to equal playing fields

i understand the raid and trials not having MM, the nightfall however is idiotic. it's a glorified strike now bungie seems unable to provide optional matchmaking so if it has to be all or naught...the nightfall should be added but not the rest
