Are (exotic) engrams truly RNG?

I know I'm not the only person who has experienced the pain and woe of receiving duplicates of the same exotics from engrams over and over again. If the system was truly RNG then each exotic chest piece or helmet, etc. that is eligible to come from engrams would have the same % chance of rolling. With the amount of people complaining about duplicates and reading some of the circumstances under which they received them I'm starting to believe there may be other variables in play. The most common condition in which people seem to receive duplicates of exotic items is when they decrypt several of them in rapid succession. Based on this I am curious to know if time is somehow factored in. If there is more to the loot system than RNGsus I really think that the community should have the right to know. What do you guys think? What's your experience with engrams and does it seem random to you?

  • This is a wild theory but I think the items you get from ToC delivered engrams are the same ones in Xur's stock rotation. So if the armory here says an item might be supplied by Xur then you might also get it from a ToC engram. Otherwise it's not available. After that it's just RNG and that means that there's every chance of duplicates.

My experience is that I've never received any duplicate exotics so far. But then again, I also didn't exploit Draksis farming and haven't bought more than 2 engrams from Xur.

    • Up until the last 2 days every exotic engram I decrypted had been a duplicate. But, the last 4 were all new. Picked up the supercell, suros, last word, and gravitron.

    • There are some exotics you can't get from engrams, such as red death, bad juju or boot and heavy weapon engrams

I'm sick of RNG. All three of my toon are 5 or less light points away from being 310, yet almost every single exotic drop gives me a 290 weapon or armor, useless. Better then that, everything I get from the raid is less then what I have, which is useless again. I've played this game for well over 2000 hours. I love Destiny, I was truly happy with the game. For the first time I'm ready to quit. This is bullshit! If your over 300 light you have a chance of getting a 310 exotic. 3% of the time RNG favors me for an exotic that's 310. 0% or the time it favors me for raid gear that is a higher light than what I currently have. I've gotten 9 fusions rifles and 8 scouts NOTHING else! That is not good enough for all the time and effort I put into this game. You guys were supposed to fix this crap! This is the first time I have ever bitched on a forum and it will be the last. Peace

I know that I'm pretty fcking tired of being given 290 versions of year 1 shit that I never used and will never use. Ffs. Oh and multiples in a row of that shit for the matter. I know I'm whining, I don't care. I've been farming exotics all day, and have just been shit on when decrypting. It makes me salty af that I see people with supercell, and here I am getting hawkmoon and tlw (which I couldn't care less about). -blam!- off with all the year 1 shit. Lower the -blam!-ing rate or something. It's bullshit. I didn't pay for ttk to use the same fcking shit I used in year 1. Edit: oh I forgot! I did get sealed ahamkaras grasp earlier. Oh yeah, I forgot, I BOUGHT THAT SHIT LAST WEEKEND FROM XUR. What happened to giving us shit we don't already have huh? Oh and 3 chest engrams in a row (all alpha lupi), what were the odds of that if this is all random? Fcking waste of my time. Very frustrating.

      • It wouldn't be truly random if it was designed to give you a different exotic every time, if anything duplicates as more of an indicator a true RNG system.

I can't complain because I've gotten more exotics in two weeks then I had most of year one. but...I've also gotten more duplicates than I ever did year one. No Back Up Plans absolutely love me right now. x3 for the last three gauntlet engrams. Just take the good with the bad.

          • In no way does "truly RNG" mean the same drop % for every item. This is basic statistics. I'm talking about 5th grade "this bag contains 5 Red widgets and 7 blue widgets. What are the odds you will draw a blue widget?" The draw can still be random even if the item chances are weighted. Besides all that, you seem to also be under the assumption that random means you get a different item each time. That's absolutely not true. Statistics apply to large numbers. Getting several duplicates is not at all indicative of a weighted RNG system. In fact, if every engram you decrypted was a new item, that would be pretty strong evidence that it isn't random, since patterns of duplicates are expected in a random system.

          • If the system was truly random, I would like to know the odds of the following. A player obtains four exotic engrams on different days and times. All four engrams are special weapon. All four turn into Invective on different days and times. With all of the other similar reports, I find it hard to believe the system isn't broken right now.

            • Grab a die. Roll it. Notice that you get duplicates. Realize that duplicates are a natural consequence of stochastic processes.
