There's a specific flaw in your question. Basically it doesn't take into account that not all "game hours" are created equal. Running a new quest on the Dreadnaught, seeing new areas for the first time, exploring hidden chambers...that's premium game time. But being given a quest that asks me to kill 3 VIP targets in all 5 locations, doing the same patrols I've always done...that's something Bungie should almost be paying me to do, because it has no entertainment value. You do it because you have to. I figure I spent about 5 hours doing the new quests on the Dreadnaught, and each of those was worth a couple of bucks to me. But most everything else has been taking me back to the same spots, just like Bungie always does. This value I would probably measure in pennies. Hope that makes sense.

  • Yes. But this isn't the only game like that. As a matter of fact most MMORPG's and RPG's have repetitive quest lines and such. Believe it or not Skyrim is a great example. To get further and get better gear you had to do the same shit over and over. Perhaps under a different storyline. But overall same mechanics. But that's why Skyrim is purely an RPG. Destiny is an FPS. I would most closely compare it to Borderlands. Yet the game received a ton of hate for being so repetitive and "not fun" because you do some of the same things again. I'm really not sure what everyone expected from an FPS. I can't think of a single game that within its very first year offered enough content to last 500+ hours if legitimate NEW content where there was no repetitiveness involved in any way shape or form.

  • I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you there. I've been playing Elder Scrolls Online for a month. From level one to level 50, and then on to VL 1 I was constantly questing for great new loot and crafting supplies to make my own. And I NEVER had to go back to areas I'd already done, except to turn in crafting writs. The game has an excellent sense of forward progression. As far as Skyrim getting you to "do the same shit over and over", that's simply not true. All of Bethesda's games gradually take you to new regions, new ruins, new dungeons. Sure, you're traveling across the overall map, but 90% of the time you were going to a new specific location, from small caves to large buildings. The environment always changed, even if you were fetching some of the same types of things. And that's what made it a better experience. Destiny's biggest problem is that Bungie did not create enough game world to give people a sense of continued discovery. In Skyrim or ESO, or any of the big MMOs, you have plenty do explore. You see, it's not that I mind collecting Spirit Bloom; it's that I mind having to do it in a place I've visited a hundred times. Think about how painfully small and empty most of the Destiny world is. It's beautiful, but feels static. The Dreadnaught, so far, has been encouraging as far as the future. If Bungie can convince Activision to just let them provide a bigger playground, this could be a great franchise. But it still, even to this day, feels unfinished, like it's constantly in recovery mode from Staten's departure.

  • Here's the basis for the problem. Everyone expected Skyrim and got an FPS. Now they're buttmad because they got RPG element game that's mainly an FPS. When what they really wanted was an RPG with FPS elements. Last I checked Brink wasn't a huge success...

  • I loved Brink! I agree though, about the expectations. I do put a lot of the blame at the feet of Activision's marketing team. Millions of people expected an epic like Mass Effect because they hinted as much. BTW...full disclosure, I actually do enjoy Destiny quite a bit, especially the PvP. It's an excellent shooter. And at least they're being more generous with the nice gear in TTK.

  • TTK has been an excellent change in pace thus far. I really like what they've done and it offers such a new expereince. I pray each DLC following is the same.

  • I still have a ways to go, but the thing I'm most curious about is how quickly a sense of repetition will set in. That's always been what forced me to take long breaks from the game. So far they seem to have put more variety into it, but I could really do without missions like "kill 3 VIP targets on all the planets".
