XP Level is STILL just a gear lock, Light Level is STILL the only thing that matters?!

So it's become blatantly obvious after one week of patch 2.0 that the hype about restructuring the light level and xp level system was pure bullshit. XP is only there to get you to the level to access gear that boosts your light level to the highest possible rating. Sound familiar? That's because that's exactly what we were doing last year. This time, at least, you can grind XP to get to max level this time. But that's the ONLY change that was actually made. Light level is still 100% the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS in terms of your guardian's power. They tried to say that this wouldn't be the case, but it is. Guy's.... NOTHING fundamental has changed despite all the self-promotion and hype. What you paid for was nothing but 1) paywall for nightfall, weekly heroic, daily heroic, trials of osiris, iron banner above all else. In the guts of the thing it was simply a UI overhaul, music swap, gear swap, and weapon balancing. Yet bungievision feels so confident in these tiny nothing changes that they decide to lockout any and all players from anything new as well as EVERY ADVANCED LEVEL OF PLAY ALREADY PAID FOR IN VANILLA AND DLC... the huge throbbing paywall. TL;DR: Light level is still the grind heavy stat it always was. Nothing has really changed from vanilla or DLC destiny into TTK. You do the exact same things almost the exact same way. There was NO INNOVATION with this patch. TTK is a cheap and unethical way to lockout all players from anything related to end-game no matter how much was paid into the game beforehand.

  • Ultimately, nothing has changed. Its all just smoke and mirrors. The end result is still the same as it was before. Called it.

    • All they did was make it gradual instead of in large steps

      • This is all true, but the grind itself has changed... or developed. Anyway, with the new quest system and guaranteed rewards for certain quests, strikes, etc. It's going to be a lot easier to find better gear. I've only played about 7-9 hours of TTK so far, and I'm at 220 light. (Or somewhere close to that.) I feel it's a much more direct loot system in certain aspects of the game now. (Do this, and I'll give you this.)

        • The system they've implemented is sooooo much better than the old one. Seriously.

        • It's a gear score.... it's nothing new. It's in almost every major mmo. Atleast you can raise it in standard gameplay. In some you have to get to a certain point raid to get better gear then harder version of said raid for even better gear. Also in these raids if someone else wants the piece they can roll for it even if they just want it to trade, sell, send it to another character, ect. This way you can hit the level cap without having to do pve and chill in the banana and the linoleum tiles.

        • Hurr Durr. Your weapons and new slots contribute too. I don't know why everyone seems to have so much trouble wrapping their heads around this. It's -blam!-ing standard in every MMO and while Destiny is not MMO, it certainly stands in common ground. In WoW it's called GearScore, in FFXIV it's iLVL (Item Level). You reach max level to equip the max level gear. But then, since endgame content should not top out at the first set of gear you get at the max level, there is a system in place to provide better gear at the same level to partake in more challenging endgame content. Complain less, experience more.

          • Into the RNG rabbit hole everyone goes. You need legendaries to get to max light, you need max light to participate in end game activities, you need either amazing RNG and/or legendary marks to get to max light level. Changed my A$$. Dont get me wrong, i love the new subclasses, i love the new cinematics, i love alot of the new stuff and changes. I do not however love the fact that i have to grind epic amounts of stuff to get back to where i want to be. Vanguard class items give vanguard increase in rep, Crucible class items give crucible increase in rep, why do the FACTION ones give increase to crucible and not FACTIONS. Thats CRAP. Legendary marks - you need to get to a high light level to start earning them, dont buy it, try doing high level anything by yourself, start slow. Go to Mars and hit a VIP high value target, you will find a Minotaur or Harpy, level 40 with shields (recommended 198) try it with as close to 196 as you can get only 2 measly points below the target. It will 2 shot you. It took me my Super, my grenade, my Heavy and all my primary to beat ONE yellow bar that was 2 tiny light levels above me. Yeah good luck.

            • Very true but at least the light level now is easier to get to grips with.

            • So true. They have lied about the light level. And I can even faintly recall a Bungie developer saying light level will be no more with Taken King. 3 facts you can guarantee will piss off anybody. 1. All old gear is useless and cannot even be used as fuel for new gear. Green armor is better then my Voidfang Vestments. LMFAO. 2. You are essentially locked out of everything because even at level 40 your as about as powerful as a gerbal. Got to grind light level. Same as Year 1. Lol. 3. Just sit down and think of all the time and heartache to get your favorite weapon or armor for it to be scrapmetal in Taken King.

            • This is like every other rpg now. I might like how my shitty armor looks in skyrim or I might like to be naked but if I want to fight bossed I need to use my best armor and weapons.

            • How light is tallied is different. All new gear can be made to carry more light. The effect light has on you is similar. But how you get there is much more diversified now. It's more akin to a combination of vanilla and HoW put to together. Everything's max is 300+ right and max end game min requirement is like 280. There's wiggle room in there.
