You haven't considered sub-chains, e.g. what happens when someone replies to post #6 after post #8 in the chronological order. Remember each post can have multiple children.

Each sub-chain would also be sorted chronologically, so if post 11 and post 14 were replies to post 6, it would display post 11 above post 14. Or is there a bigger problem than that which I'm not considering?

No, that's fine. I was just wondering. There's basically two ways to handle it. How you've suggested there, or you increase the levels of nesting beyond two, so you can have genuine trees, rather than relying on the mouseover arrow indicator to see what was replied to what. What you've suggested is basically after you reach the nesting limit you just make it a flat, chronological view, which is a nice compromise imo.

It may work if once the replies are listed chronologically, sub-replies are converted to quotes.

Even that isn't entirely necessary, though. The system described in the OP would be a big step in the right direction.
