What if choosing a race actually mattered?

First of all, I am sorry for any spelling mistakes, english is not my primary language! And this is my first post so be gentle! Thanks! So I wanted to start a topic about something that actually bothered me since Day One of Destiny. As I created my new character, there I was in a huge dilemma between which race I should pick. I was comparing their looks and stuff, thought the Awoken looked a bit too much fabulous but could still be looking badass with some customisation, so I thought: why not! But then I asked myself, what is the point of picking up Awoken instead of Human and Exo...? What's the difference? Besides looking Fab or like a robot? Sadly, the answer was: None. Little comparaison here, there I was, staring at my screen, realizing I had the choice between 3 Iphones with differents colors, instead of an Iphone, android and blackberry. Why didn't Bungie thought about this? Every race should have multiple perks unique to their race! Otherwise there is no point at all! Most other RPG with distincts races do this! It's common sense that an alien race should have an advantage or a disadvantage over another race! I want a reason for making a Hunter Awoken instead of a Hunter Human! for example: Awoken could have a 5%+ increased accuracy with sniper rifles or 15% increased reload speed on Handguns. But receive more 10% more damage from melee due to their fragile fabulous bodies. Exo start off with an initial +50 strenght and have a buff that can enhance their armor by 50% for 15 seconds (3 mins cooldown). Picking up a defender Exo Titan would actually make sense now. etc... I think you get the point! Otherwise, I don't get why they aren't all Humans since all of them start from the exact same pile of bones. It would actually make more sense that way that we all start from Earth rather than having my character act all surprised when it's time to meet the Awoken when's he's actually one of them! Each race should start off at different planets with differents "Race outposts" and the Tower is this big place where everyone join up. I love this game but it could be just so much more. Do you have any other suggestions about how the races could be different one from another besides just the looks? Any perks ideas? Thanks for reading! EDIT #1: Oh and any thoughts on raid/vanguard/crucible/ironbanner additionnals perks depending on how much piece of the set you have on? That would allow some nice depth to the game I think. EDIT#2: Thank you guys for the many answers! I'm actually surprised and glad this topic got that much attention! I just keep hoping that Bungie will follow the footsteps of GREAT RPGs such as WoW/Elders Scrolls/Dragon Age etc and learn from them.

  • I wouldn't want different perks for each race because racial abilities become a pain in the ass to properly balance (look at WoW and how people still bitch over certain racials being OP for raiding or PvP). What I would want, though, is for the story to be somewhat different based on your race, starting from where you begin in the game up through the very end, I want a different story for each race.

    • In the pre-activision destiny, each race had a different start zone and such, then they came in and we all got the exo entrance area.

      • Great idea but sadly it would only add to the whole master race elitism. Or you'd get posts like, hm crota must have ghorn and all exos or similar. There are enough racists out there without making it an in game thing too.

      • Racial abilities would be cool but the pvp crowd would complain more than they already do. Even in world of warcraft pvp I really hate some of the racial and passive abilities some races have.

      • But then if I want to be a human, but the way I play contradicts the perks, I may be very unhappy. Bungie said very early on that your race was a purely, personal preference, and it would not affect your gameplay.

      • Then people would bitch about how Exos dominate the Crucible or how nobody takes Awoken into Crota's End, etc. etc.

It should be: Awoken: +2 agility, +%10 grenade damage Human: +2 recovery, +%10 weapon damage Exo: +2 toughness, +%10 melee damage

What if choosing races mattered? It was supposed to. This may go a bit off topic, FYI Back during development Bungie noted that choosing your race would have more significance than just being a pretty face. However, that was not the case - things were cut from the game and ideas were scrapped due to tensions between content that would be carried into the final product, repurposed (Osiris was supposed to be a faction, but was repurposed into an upcoming crucible event) or scrapped altogether. A while back, somebody on Reddit posted a recommendation to have a Bungie employee do an AMA, discussing various topics such as playspaces cut from development and the obvious lack of content, primarily a story. Shortly after, somebody claiming to be an employee replied, discussing tension between the higher-ups at Activision, the lack of content and cut playspaces. He had this to say about cut faction content, races, and the general introduction into the game. All of the Last City factions had their storylines and dialogue cut, the Guardian's initial introduction to the Tower and the Last City was cut, and ALL the origins were homogenized down to the one originally used for Exo characters. This does go to show that, at some time in development, the races you chose did determine the way the game started out for your Guardian. Destiny originally had seperate introductions for the Humans and the Awoken, but in the end they were scrapped, and the Exo's introduction was used for everybody in the final release. This is also why, compared to the rest of the game, the opening mission was much more cinematic than the rest of the game (Dregs crawling though the walls, your Ghost activating the power grid as sparks fall and shanks rise from the blackness of the pit below you, and Vandals jumping from tunnels and vents in the ceiling VASTLY contrast to enemies walking out conveniantly placed doors at just the right time. Go back and find the E3 2013 gameplay reveal of Destiny, and you'll find that it is very much the same from that gameplay session to the final release (excluding the fact that the boss encountered near the end of the session was moved to the final fight in Mission 2, Restoration) On the topic of various other things, unrelated to the races, unique introductions, storylines and missions unique to factions (not to mention that there were more than just three factions, with what would have been the addition of Seven Seraphs and Osiris), and a much different introduction to the tower, and the game as a whole. On the matter of various weapon buffs or armor perks, none were ever mentioned, but it wouldn't be too far fetched of an assumption to say that it may have been a concept at some point in time.

      • Uhhh...It already matters. The dancing style varies greatly between the races. Now I'm sure someone will cry out in a shrill prepubescent voice "dancing doesn't matter!" To that, I ask: If dancing is not a crucial part of the game, why does it take up valuable controller space, which could be used to cycle through inventory, or use synths? Game, set and match.

        • Dude there's a huge difference between them all. The Exo, Awoken, and Human all have different dance moves. Pretty important perk when choosing a race

        • There are countless RPG's that have race/gender bonuses for characters. The Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, and Diablo just to name a few. It wouldn't hurt Bungie to rip a page or two from these franchises. Their wild popularity is proof enough that little details like race/gender bonuses can go a long way to having a good RPG.

            • I think they should each get some type of ability boost. 3 abilities, 3 races, so something like Exo: armor boost Awoken: recovery boost Human: agility boost Honestly, I made my characters based off this tree because I thought it was more fitting so my exo is a titan, my awoken is a warlock, and my hunter is a human. Would be cool to stack or interchange the boosts if there was any.

            • Definitely a good idea that race should actually make a difference...but I was thinking more along the lines of just differences in stats. There are 3 races, and 3 stat values. Perhaps just have each one associated with an inherent +10-20 stat base value. The simpler the better...KISS principle.

            • That would add some interesting twists to the game play, Especially if your race also changed the pros and cons of game play within each separate Class and subclass.

            • Instead of saying this why not say something important like: why can we not re-assign the buttons on our D-pad to do something different e.g. Pressing right button can be changed to use a heavy synth

              • I like it. I am all for more customization of our characters. Heck, I have wondered why they never let us even name our characters. There's a lot of missed opportunities with this game that I, realizing it's a pipe dream, hope they add in at a later date. As a side note, for English not being your native language, good job! I know a lot of English as a first language people that don't write as coherently as you do.

                • It could be something simple like the race affects the base stats like the class does. It wouldn't be significant and could easily be displayed during character creation. So little, but could really open up some playstyle options.

I am with you 100%. Whether a set of perks/disadvantages like you suggest, or even just some unique armor (even class armor) - even same stats but different appearance. I can not help but feel that more was intended than we got, but there are a few notable differences - beyond the dance moves and waves (Exo salute wave is flat-out the most awesome). First, and perhaps not really evidence that suggests more was planned: some of the lines delivered by tower NPC's changes based on both your class, and race. The Vanguard mentors all make a variety of class based comments (Cayde-6 will ask my Titan: "Get tired of talking to the Blue Wall over there?" or Ikora will say: "How can I help you, Titan?"). Race wise, I have had Banshee-44 greet my Exo by saying: "You look just like someone in my old unit, same markings..." and someone (I forget if the Cryptarch or Tess Everiss) commented: "It is nice to see a fellow Awoken fighting on the front lines." I am certain there are more little bits like that, but again, they may be simple treats not indicative of any greater plan. However, the fact that there are six voice actors for player characters (one for each race/gender combo) makes me think that more was intended than what is presented. It could be another simple treat, but to have six different actors record dialogue is pretty intense if they had no intention of making something more of the race distinctions. I have no idea if there is any merit to the rumours that there were initially going to be a different "intro area" for each race, and we got a slightly reworked version of one of them, but I would love to someday see some sort of "flashback" level showcasing exactly that. Not sure how that would work without ret-conning the intro level as it stands, unless we got some sort of new race specific mission that explores that races history somehow... I guess we just have to wait and see... and hope.
