At first i thought ships would be there for a reason. But they really arent. they just look cool. I thinkthere should be a mission similar to Long Night of Solace from halo reach, where you fly around in your ship and fight fallen or hive ships or something. maybe even as a part of a raid. And if you have legendary or are ships, then your weapons are better and stronger. The whole idea of ships is underlooked and has so much more potential.
