Improving Destiny: Part Three - Weapon Upgrade and Customization

I understand this is not a popular topic with Bungie, but I still putting it out there. Weapon Customization Bungie has already shown that they are able to manipulate the weapon upgrade nodes to gain a desired effect. The first example of that was the exotic shard, followed by the Murmur and Husk of the Pit and to a lesser extent the re-forging of Iron Banner weapons. Before I present my ideas I want to leverage two quotes from the Bungie Weekly Update 10/17/2014 discussing why they nerfed several weapons, including the Vex Mythoclast. “There should be no single answer for how to win in Destiny.” “Balance is not about everyone being equal, but rather that not everybody is doing the exact same thing. If everyone is doing the same exact thing, something is not balanced. Everybody is trying to pursue the same unbalanced thing.” Yet nothing has changed… many players still lean on a select few weapons. The most recent example of this was Crota’s End, where Ice Breaker and Gjallarhorn are weapons of choice. I read on the forum that some raid teams shunned players because they did not have a Gjallarhorn (I believe this crisis stemmed from a misinterpretation of why Invigorate chose it, see Bungie Weekly Update 12/11/14 for details) So, how can a degree of balance be attained? The answer is weapons customization. Imagine for a moment being able to add an element to your favorite primary and change one (1) of the main attributes of your primary, special or heavy weapon. Let’s use the MIDA Multi-Tool as an example (it’s a multi-tool after all). What if you could replace the hair trigger with full auto and add solar damage? Suddenly you have a custom Vision of Confluence with third-eye. How about this scenario? Let’s say you had a nice new 331 Lord High Fixer drop from the Nightfall with Rangefinder and Mulligan. What if you could replace Mulligan with Firefly or Outlaw then add Arc. Boom! Custom Fatebringer… Finally, what if an original Vision of Confluence or Fatebringer was required for our examples? Implementation What if breaking down a raid specific weapon and some exotics yielded more than just generic weapon parts, energies or exotic shard. What if dismantling a Fatebringer yielded Ascendant energies plus Firefly or Outlaw weapon part. Then, as with the example above, you take your Lord High Fixer and your Firefly weapon part to Banshee-44 (You know him right? the Gunsmith in the tower. Yes, that is his name.). He resets the attribute you specify then attach the Firefly part and the consumable element part that you just purchased from Xur, for 7 Strange Coins, all for a total of 150 Vanguard marks (tax included). Has your mind been blown? Key Benefits 1. Add interesting dynamic that would create a degree of balance between exotic and legendary weapons. 2. Versatile arsenal. Imagine having a Black Hammer and a LDR 5001 with similar perks. 3. Custom upgraded weapons to replace your old raid favorites by using their parts. 4. Space saver. You wouldn’t have to keep multiple copies of the same elemental primary. a. You could have a set number of primaries on which you change the element. 5. Helps keep routine activities and Raids relevant. a. More uses for Vanguard marks and strange coins. b. Incentive to run VoG and CE to obtain weapons for parts and materials. c. Energies would be more useful to veteran players as they would be more inclined to customize and upgrade their less impress weapon drops. Restrictions As this proposal is to promote versatility in your arsenal without becoming game breaking, some key restrictions come to mind. 1. Certain unique exotics should be static, such as Icebreaker, Vex Mythoclast, etc. a. It would diminish the value of this proposal if players could have an Icebreaker that did all three elemental damage. 2. Exotic weapons can only accept parts from other Exotics and of the same “class.” a. Ex. If you wanted to add tracking to Dragon’s Breath that part would have to come from Truth or Gjallarhorn. b. Full auto could be taken from Bad Juju and added MIDA but not Plan C, etc. 3. Dismantling a custom weapon does not yield any parts or materials and only the elemental damage part can be changed. 4. Elemental parts are consumable, as in the sense that they cannot be obtained from dismantling a weapon to continue the demand for strange coins, thus keeping the Weekly Hero relevant. I’ve pretty much covered the basics… Please leave your feedback and bump/like if you appreciate the idea(s). Look forward to my next entry… Until then thanks for reading.

This game is most consistently and fairly criticized for lack of content. Most all players agree, there need to be more options/customizations/paths to the top tier. That said, whether there needs to be multiple raid weapon and armor sets or say the two existing raids + HoW all drop top tier gear so guardians can mix and match for the looks and perks they really want is maybe for another discussion. Either way, something's got to drastically change for HoW (I won't be holding my breath) for players to continue playing thru to what September for the so-called comet expansion. My suggestion would be that HoW does not increase the level cap, but also introduces a hard-er L32 VOG that drops 331/36 raid items. In addition, all the tower vendors offer upgrade path to current tower legendary stats for all items (exactly like Xur does for exotics, except using ascendants and commendations) this would give a use for the vendors, and all the commendations and materials stacking in my vault. As a third path, after full raid completion you get one more special commendation that allows either exchange of a raid item or a straight upgrade of a non-raid legendary to top-tier raid stats. These suggestions seem Like they would be so easy to implement as the mechanic is already there (Xur upgrading). And it would give most all of us a reason to keep playing all summer and make our guardians truly unique, then when the comet expansion happens the level cap gets raised and we can all work thru again and close to either upgrade some or all old stuff or mix and match with new stuff. I want to expand a little further on the idea of upgrade to legendary of any item. Using the Khostov as an example, it would work like this: you take your Khostov to the gunsmith with a commendation and some glimmer, he upgrades it to uncommon (green) then to get to rare (blue) turn it in again to him with a commendation, glimmer and say some spinmetal. Then to go to legendary, take it to the vanguard or crucible weapon vendor along with a commendation, glimmer, spinmetals, and ascendant materials and you get a tower-comparable stats legendary Khostov with and RNG roll for perks. Say you don't like your perks, take it to the speaker with a mote of light, and you can get a re-roll on the perks. Now armor would be slightly different since tower armor caps at 33 light and the top raid items are 36 light. Say you want the original game Hunter helm at raid legendary, you would have to turn it in all the same to get to tower-Legendary, but now to get to raid legendary, turn it in one more time with a 36 light raid helm and there you have a 36 light unique helm. Say you want the warlock VoG 30 light raid helm to 36 light, all it would need is one turn in along with a CE 36 light helm.

    • This is a really great idea. Running strikes and raids and such multiple times means even if you've gotten the same drops they can still be truly useful rather than simply sharded, which is of more limited use.

    • Your example of mida multi tool mixed with vision for full auto and fire damage contradict your restriction of exotics only being able to give other exotics their perks. You could fix this by saying that exotics can be changed by exotics and raid gear because raid gear is on par with exotics. I would also like to see this with armor for certain perks.

      • Bump. Great idea. This would make the grinding that I'm so regretting much more worth it if I could have different perks or customize my weapons.

            • Would definitely need a bigger vault. I feel that this would make exotics less exotic by having these really awesome legendaries though.

              • Agreed, Along with match making for raid at least, and work work should count for something for example the more kills you get in PVE the better of a chance for engrams, also why the -blam!- do bosses not drop engrams? whoever vetoed against u are one of the reasons this game has so many problems

while a cool idea I believe you've mistaken destiny for an rpg. unfortunately I don't think this is something that could be realistically expected in destiny. while it could happen in destiny 2, I'd trade all the weapon customization in the world for some real story with some real characters. I think letting the gunsmith upgrade and reroll legendary guns and armor a la iron banner would be more realistic and just fine for our purposes given how easy mores are to come by.

                • Solid, but the only problem is that raid and exotic weapons need to remain unique. As OP as a full-auto MIDA might be, it defeats the exotic nature: it becomes a normal scout rifle without optic upgrades.
