With the Dark Below just a day away I've been thinking about it a good amount. So supposedly the team Eris went into the Hellmouth with long ago was thought to have all been killed, and she managed to barely make it out alive herself.
To her knowledge her entire team died.
The thought came to mind that perhaps she was wrong and someone survived, afterall we don't know who was on her team...
Is it possible Xur was a member of her team and had survived and simply made it out before Eris did? Perhaps The Nine orchestrated the original mission, working to prevent the Hive from becoming a force they couldn't handle, and things went south. Xur survived and made it out, with who knows what kind of knowledge....or power.
The Nine are wise, powerful, and secretive. Perhaps Xur found out more than he should have, and at risk of him sharing what he knew The Nine instead took control of his mind, using him no longer as a warrior but as a merchant, their puppet, their eyes wherever they wish to see...
Whenever Xur is in the tower, his speech is very limited. He makes clear that he doesn't control the vessel he's in, he can feel himself decaying, and he appears wherever The Nine wish. Other than that, it's like he's trapped inside of his mind while his body moves against his will, everything he does and says being under their supervision and control.
Further supporting this theory is the appearance of Xur himself. Eris lost her vision and bleeds from her eyes from the horrors she witnessed on her mission and covers herself with a veil and dark armor. Xur clearly has been deformed as well, so badly that his face is consumed by tentacles with glowing orbs for eyes, shrouded in darkness, much like Eris', hiding his figure underneath tattered, mangled robes....
What if Xur was once a powerful warlock trained by the Nine like Eris was, and whatever he witnessed on their mission not only nearly killed him, but corrupted him so badly that The Darkness forever became a part of him, and to stop the news of what happened from spreading and to contain Xur himself, not knowing what's kind of powers that level of corruption could have done to him, The Nine directly took control of him and concealed his identity in fear of all of them being hunted down if anyone were to find out what they'd done and what horrors they sent their warriors into...
Just something to think about.

I really hope that your profile name is a reference to rangers apprentice

There are theories that Toland the Shattered is Xur

Read her grim card and the new grim cards. Lists her whole fireteam.

Xur is kabr
-
If Xur was in Eris's fireteam, he would come riding on a rocket launcher with the Cryptarch's face on the front. Xur fires a Cryptarch at Crota, OHKO-ing him and causing millions of exotic engrams to pour out everywhere. Xur then uses his tentacle faces to bring all exotics in the game, even the house of wolves exotics and brings them all together to form Xurtron. Xur fires a Cryptarch face at Eris's fireteam and causes them to wipe. "Knowledge is power, guardian" the Cryptarch speaks as the skull forms on Eris's screen Eris went to orbit and left her fireteam to be smashed by Cryptarch rocket launchers for all eternity.
-
Xur is too strung out on drugs to be a guardian lol
-
Off the top of my head eris' fire team consisted of: Eris Toland the shattered Vell tarlowe Omar Eriana-3
-
If u read the grimor cards it tells u who was in erisis fire team toland was and a few others who arnt worth a mention
-
Xur probably threw Sunbreakers and Voidfangs as his weapon of choice.
-
He's an entity that is manifested through a certain pattern in the planets, or something along those lines. Which is the reason he only shows in the tower at specific times. He isn't, and never was, a guardian.

Edited by Meatonyourbuns: 12/13/2014 3:13:12 AMXur is a servant of the nine who rule in the outer plabets. He is a human who was caught by the darkness and wholly corrupted. He is no guardian, in fact he is about as far from guardian as you can get.
-
I had a thought. I think Young Ahkmahara and Saint 14 and The Third Man were part of Eris's team.
-
Nerf?
-
They should really make a story line about xur
-
Xur is probably like yoda but was never a guardian but something stronger this is why he got good shit
-
I like how you typed this entire thing out and never bothered to read the myriad of Xur dialogue bits that conflict entirely with this theory. He was part of something, a member of a group of people that went really awry. "The pull of the outer worlds is so faint here, the sun is so heavy." "The Awoken did not make a choice...but we did." "I am only an Agent, the Nine rule beyond the Jovians." (i.e. beyond Saturn and Jupiter) "Some of this bodies ancestors where born on this world but we were greatly changed to live in the outer worlds." "We saw the colony fail, not knowing what we saw." If anything, Xur was probably a remnant of a group of colonists trying to settle past the asteroid belt, possibly on one of the Jovian planets' moons. Also, gauging by the item descriptions and Grimoire cards, Eris's original fireteam that fell consisted of: Eris Morn Vell Tarlowe Eriana-3 Sai Mota Toland The Shattered Omar Agah ...soo, yeah. There's all of that.

Also , parts of the sacrificial urn mini quest line involve meeting with xur
-
Na xur is just a d**k. Nothing more
-
There's another theory that Xur is kabr
-
If Xur was in the fireteam then the whole team should have lived. Xur could open his pockets the throw Ghorns at the team then it would be a walk in the park. He also have tons of heavy ammo packs so unlimited ammo.
-
Its like they tried to not have a story line. So many opportunities to come up with something cool smh man
-
"These two NPC's are both kinda creepy so they must have know each other"
-
If Xur was in you fire team he would be randomly appearing in different areas and always bring the wrong gear needed lol
-
It's just sad that the lack of background content has players creating their own on the forums. Don't get me wrong, I like this game but none of us can argue that this game has sufficient story content. Characters are so shallow that we all are forced to create our own theories to give them depth. Hopefully Bungie gives future story missions and characters a little more thought.
