Perks of having more than one character?

I'm a level 26 Warlock, and to summarize what I'm about to say I'll ask this: Is having only one character a practical or even possible way to get to level cap efficiently? I play Destiny. A lot. But all of my friends have more than one character on destiny, since they find it easier to do the Nightfall once on each character per week and transfer all the strange coins to their main account. Sure, this is a great idea. But why else should I spend time getting another character to 20 to possibly be let down and not even find a legendary until week 3 of having that character? What other benefits does it actually have besides randomized loot drops and strange coins? They keep telling me that I should do it, and honestly I'm on the verge of it. I just want to know if it's worth the time.

 • The raid is the main reason most people do it. You're not guaranteed to get your gear, but you have twice the chance of getting it when running it with 2 chars vs 1, or of course 3 times the chance when running with 3 vs 1. I personally made two warlocks (my main class) to try and get raid gear quicker and then one titan (wanted a titan over a huntard)
