The Rose Wilts: Thorn and Last Word (pt3)

___________________________________________ _________________Part 3____________________ “You have no hope Shin. Give in.” said Xyor as it swayed back and forth several feet in the air. Beneath it were two Knights with swords and six acolytes. Shin kept his Last Word trained on the wizard while he measured the odds, surveying the chamber in which they stood. Close, he thought, but I can take them. The knights advanced towards him slowly as the acolytes fanned about him. “What do you want from me?” Shin asked as he backed slowly away, biding his time. It spoke with Jaren’s voice. It was the voice of the man who had taught him to fight, and to fend for himself. The man who had shown him a better path when there had been none that he could see. The man who had told him where he might find the Light, and become the beacon of hope Jaren had once been. But that man was gone. “I want your Light. Crota hungers. He must feed if he is to wake.” It smiled a smile that made Shin’s lip curl in disgust. “Okay, well see here. I’ve gotten kind of attached to this Light stuff. Plus,” Shin punctuated his statement with a tilt of his head and a flourish of his piece, “the Light is just a loan. So, I can’t really help you there.” The wizards smile melted at his words, returning its face to a somewhat normal level of grotesqueness. “Very well then,” it said. Its hands began to glow with a strange blue light, and simultaneously the Knight’s swords erupted into green flames. But Shin was prepared. Shin held his off-hand up, open in a gesture of concession. “On second thought,” he said as he began to slowly lower his gun to the ground, “I think I can just give you the Light”. Xyor cocked his head sideways, and the glow began to subside. “Good. You saw wisdom in the end human. We will make your end swift.” Xyor motioned to the Knight nearest Shin. It began to move slowly and carefully towards him. Shin took a deep breath, reached into his center, and let the Light come forth. The light that exploded from him stunned all in the chamber, except Xyor, who covered his eyes and retreated behind a pillar. Shin brought his off-hand down priming the hammer on Last Word. In nearly the same instant, he fired the Light into the face of the Knight nearest him. With the inhuman speed granted him by the Light he dispatched the other Knight in the same manner. He recalled the remains of his Light into himself, and dealt with the acolytes with regular bullets. Still stunned from his Light, they put up about as much resistance as… well as much as flesh versus steel. Shin reloaded as he strafed the pillar that he’d seen Xyor hide behind, but Xyor was not there. Hearing a noise behind him, Shin jumped aside as several blasts of lightning struck the spot he’d been standing in a moment before. He turned to face Xyor, his legs crouched and ready to spring to either side. He noticed that there was no red aura surrounding Xyor. Shin smiled. Smoky tendrils of Darkness gathered in the room and all that Shin could see were Xyor’s eyes, glittering green with rage and hatred. “You were once a man I loved, and then a man I hated. Now you are a monster. Each time you died and remade yourself into something worse.” Shin shook his head sadly in the inky Darkness. “I guess the third death will be the charm.” “What I was is meaningless. I am within the unity of the Hive now. Are those your last words?” it asked. “Yours, not mine,” Shin said as he simultaneously pulled his remaining Light into Last Word, and sprang to the side. He fired his shot straight into the left eye of Xyor, splattering more hive ichor onto the floor. Shin’s leg erupted in fiery agony as the lightning grazed him. He rolled onto his feet as he landed, only to be knocked back to his knees by a wave of pain. Slowly, agonizingly, he managed to make it to his feet. He felt for his connection to the Traveler, seeking the nearest source of Light. With his business done, he limped away and did not look back. Had he looked back he would have noticed the Darkness that churned silently around the body of Xyor. Centuries later, in a final pulse of Darkness deep below the surface of Earth Xyor rose once more to plague the living. ---------------------------------------- Bump to share :) Thanks for reading!
