I Did Some Simple Maths on the Iron Banner Event

So I've played all day today trying to reach Rank 2 in order to buy that shiny new class item, but after a grueling long day filled with the Iron Banner event, I've only reached about halfway through Rank One. Needless to say, this event is grindy, but is it just your average video game grind or is it ridiculously grindy? Well I did the maths. In order to reach Rank 2, you must earn 1200 reputation points. In order to earn reputation points you must either do bounties or win Iron Banner matches. When you win an Iron Banner match, and only if you win, you recieve a meager 25 reputation points. There are no rewards for the losing side, no matter how well they preformed, and there are no random loot drops unique to the Iron Banner event that you can obtain along the way. Since a few of todays bounties required you to already be Rank 2 with certain items equipped, I did not include them in the basic math I have done. So here goes: 1200 divided by 25 is equal to 48, which means you need to win 48 matches to reach Rank 2. The average Control match, in my experience, lasts between 12-15 minutes. 48 matches at 15 minutes per match will take up a total of 720 minutes, which is equal to 12 hours of game time. To total it all up, provided you win ever single match you play, it will take you around 12 hours to reach Rank 2 with the Iron Banner Event. 12 hours is a lot of time. I'd wager it's more time than the average person with a job/school is willing to dedicate to a video game in a given week. Bounties could possibly reduce this time, but not by much. Especially since some of them can't be done until you are Rank 2 anyways. All I'm asking for is more incentives to keep playing. Give us some smaller items along the way, or simply change up the amount of reputation recieved from participating in a match. I love Destiny, and I want to keep loving Destiny, but this is just too much. I can forgive the lack of decent storytelling because the Grimoire is very interesting. I can forgive the lack of PvP balance because that can be overcome through wit and skill. But grinding is an outdated and lazy game mechanic that should have disappeared a long time ago. TL;DR It could possibly take you 12 hours just to reach Rank 2 with the Iron Banner Faction. EDIT: Be sure to do bounties, as this can greatly reduce the grinding, although today's bounties are ridiculous and just encourage you to grind even more.

 • I'm almost rank 3. I have three kids and a full time job. I don't get much play time in between work and the fam. But some how I managed to get this far and even got one of the exclusive iron banner hand cannons. Luck? Skill? Or maybe I just wanted it more? All I'm saying is if they suddenly make everything about this game (not just the iron banner) easy for casual players, this game won't be fun or interesting to a majority of it's players. U gotta put in the time and earn it guardian.
