Titans and Tanking

Alright, I'm going to say this right here, right now so that those who only read the first line of a post will know what I'm talking about: this topic relates to the Titan Defender's lack of defensive capability in PvE. PvE, PvE, PvE, PvE. *ahem* Titans. They're big. They're strong. They're brave. They're... the equivalent of a twig... I'm sure that there are many Titan Defenders out there that have a VERY hard time staying alive while also keeping the enemy's attention. Those that chose the Titan with the idea of being a tank to better take incoming damage may have noticed that they can't do so. The issue with this can be related to many things, such as the lack of defensive capabilities and an apparent mismatch with the Warlock Sunsinger's shield-granting melee. "Wait, Warlock?" Yes, good sir/madam. The Warlock Sunsinger has the exact same thing that the Defender has, only it needs to simply hit an enemy to grant the extra layer of shields, whereas a Titan has to kill the enemy with his melee to get that same bonus. What has me conflicted is that the Warlock Sunsinger, which I envisioned as a DPS/Support type, has a melee attack that is not only stronger, but also grants bonuses upon hitting an enemy. The Titan Defender's melee is a normal melee, only with the added effect of giving you an extra layer of shields should you finish an enemy with a quick one-two. If the Warlock Sunsinger has this ability, what reason does a Titan have to be at the front of the group in, let's say, a Nightfall? The other issue here is that the Defender lacks added defense in addition to the regular armor/recovery/agility stats. When the armor is completely maxed out, I don't see as much of a difference. I had the idea that the skill tree would include something to bolster my own defense, but I don't see anything like that. Yes, we do have the indestructo-shield, but that is a Super, and we don't have access to that 24/7. My point here is that another class gets better shielding than the Defender, and that the Defender itself does not nearly have enough defensive power to even consider himself a tanky unit. Now, don't get me wrong here, guys: I've played the Defender since I created my character, and I have it maxed out with different builds in mind for different situations. I've also played the Striker, and I can safely say that the Striker is a good class and is well thought-out. A change that I would like to humbly propose is a swap in shield-triggering between the Warlock Sunsinger and the Titan Defender, where the Sunsinger has to kill an enemy to get the bonus, and the Defender simply has to hit them. An addition that I would like to propose for the Defender is a skill that decreases incoming damage by an amount around the 5%-25% range, and also decreases firepower by the given amount. It is not an active skill, but rather a passive skill. Another addition that could be made is a skill that increases the amount of threat you build on your enemies, or "hate/aggro." If you want a shooter cited for this mechanic, just look at Army of Two. The aggro mechanic was absolutely superb in the first two, and is not just limited to MMOs. We could also implement a "Taunt" feature into the "Suppressor Grenade," which causes enemies in PvE to focus on the Defender while keeping its PvP function of disabling abilities. Well, the floor is yours, forum. What do you guys think? Edit: Added in a "Hate" generating skill as another suggestion. Edit 2: Added in "Taunt Grenades," as suggested by Entei, and reworked my idea regarding Titan damage reduction, as per Gipemelo's argument. Edit 3: Updated introductory statement to better reflect my personal stance on the matter and not throw off potential posters (I'm not advertising an MMO approach here).

  • Dude, do you even know what you are talking about??? Tanks use their guns, Titans don't. A more appropriate term would be "Flying Armoured Bulldozer"

  • I dont know my Titan was my first class and my favorite class and the defender is pretty dang useful especially with the saint 14, and I don't die a lot with my Titan as I do with my other class(yes I have all the class). But all the class are useful in their own way

Well I played all classes but my main class is Titan and i play it 80% of my play time on Destiny. First of all Titan can have the highest armor stat, by having a high armor stat you can stay longer in a firefight without withdrawing to heal. Second, even though Titan needs to get a kill to get a shield the perks are just AMAZING, you have the option to constantly regenerate your shield and with unbreakable and no back up plans equiped its duration can bu upped to 25 sec( not to mention its a stronger shield than the warlocks). Third blessing and armor of light are what makes a Titan the thank of the game, with blessing you can constanly get a shield even outside of your bubble and with armor you can be unstoppable inside your shield, ive killed many minatours, captains, knight who dared to challenge me inside my own shield. So yeah Titan is the tankiest class in the game

    • I've gone on an on about the lack of differences between the 'classes' but I don't think anything will/can be done as im sure we will hear that changes that drastic will lead to bugs here there an everywhere and require significant amounts of time. The classes an the roles they play were not thought out too well but im sure they had a deadline to adhere too if under Activision so we'll have to just dream of the 'working classes' we envisioned. I simply play my Titan because it's like picking hard mode in a game whereas Hunters an Warlocks are like picking easy with self reviving and blade dancer in pvp especially but thats just my opinion.... each to their own! Merry Christmas and if you don't celebrate it, enjoy the holiday and good vibes it provides.

While I get where you're coming from... Titans are 80% Armor 20% Cloth, according to other sources not sited. Hunters are 50-50. While Warlocks are 20-80. Warlocks probably have this feature to make up for the fact that they are SUPER SQUISHY. If Warlocks didn't have this ability, sometimes it's hard to even get close enough to a ranged enemy to melee them, the thought of dying instantly afterwards would make for a horrendous team member. (Just as the Hunter can be camouflaged after a Charged Melee.) This is more of a fail safe or peace of mind for the player rather than being overpowered. I play as a Titan the majority of my game. I actually have two Titans. I deleted my other characters because I like being able to receive and absorb substantial amounts of damage before I have to fall back. While Titans might not be the "tanks" that you're looking for such as in other MMOs. They are definitely heavily armored and to a point that I feel is balanced. Especially with the Defender Class, Ward of Dawn, and Armor of Light equipped.

There is an overwhelming difference of power in the crucible my first two posts got taken down so I'll reduce this fraction a third time. Titans have to work literally twice as hard in the crucible to fight against classes that overall better in the crucible. Ward of dawn, the light against which darkness breaks, acts as nothing but a distraction. A stagnant, penetrable distraction. Fists of havoc is a melee super attack. Which means not only does it take significantly more skill to administer, but it is more dangerous because your putting your life in danger because it's the only super that's a melee attack. It takes skill for titans to succeed in the crucible. Target practice for a warlock, a hunters godforsaken dreamtheatre. Titans are playing chess in the crucible with classes that are playing checkers. When the arc blade and golden gun are a one burst attack, when warlocks have to palm the targets for the spirit bomb to work, then maybe they can relate to every titans struggle. Even then they can mod around a more mobile just as effective super as opposed to a STAGNANT, PENETRABLE, DISTRACTION. Hunting live targets that can constantly see you with zero stealth accounts for something.

The Titan overshield is NOT the same as the Warlock one. Titan gets a perk that makes it recharge and can increase it's length with an Exotic piece. The Warlock overshield has a max duration of 15 seconds, does not recharge and (as far as I can tell) takes less hits to negate. I would like to see more tanking abilities on the Titan. Not full blown MMO style tanking, as in taking -90% damage and stuff, but enmity control seems like a good idea. For example, being able to force all enemies in a certain range to engage only him/her for a limited time (and possibly a defence buff during that time?) would be a nice ability.

              • The defender shield should at least do void damage over time to enemies that enter. The Great Wall of China wasn't famous because the Mongolians walked through it and started dancing..

I feel titan armor should have more defense so they take more damage. It makes no sense for my Warlock to have as much defense as a Titan. On the flip side, warlocks should do more damage since they die easier. Hunters should be in between. Edit: no need to swap abilities between sunsinger and titan, simply require the titans to have the sunsinger mechanics. Sun singer isn't a full DPS subclass like the void walker glass cannon.
