Destiny Secrets - Religious Parallels

READ BEFORE POSTING: This video does not claim that these "parallels" are "intended allusions". This means that as a Christian, I saw some parallels and hoped the community (of all religions) might find them interesting. The point of this forum is for others to come and share parallels between THEIR beliefs/outlook/religion and Destiny. Religious debates should be handled in a different location. Thanks for participating and stay positive! :) Edit: Destiny seems to call upon many religious sentiments within its story. Post Religious Parallels between Destiny and your beliefs here! Note: Please, be respectful and mature as this subject can be sensitive to others.

  • Another interesting similarity is baptism, through baptism we Christians are reborn into a new life though the Holy Spirit. A guardian is reborn in the light through a ghost. I love the thought of this parallel.

        • The Bible warns of the end times, with a possible apocalypse and Armaggedon - the climactic battle between good and evil that Christ stops and he banishes Satan. The Speaker warns of an apocalypse and a final all-or-nothing battle makes a good climax. The traveler awakens or the Light itself appears to save everything. Or the darkness, traveler and speaker could be Satan, the antichrist, and the false prophet. Then the guardians would have to find the real light.

          • Perhaps dig into the Norse Religion and see how many comparisons you dig up. Last city = Valhalla Ghosts = Valkries Guardians = Einherjar Our galaxy = Vígríðr Tricorn = wolf = Fenrir = Destruction of the Traveler Traveler was one of the names for Odin. You're brought back to prepare for and fight a battle in the field of Vígríðr, which will result in countless death but ultimately save the world as we know it.

            • Ah I see you edited onto this & included your video, so I'll try to extend onto what I originally said. You covered this extremely well as it is hard to research realigious parraels we know japanese folklore & a few indian tribes seem to have influences but following up it all can go so many different ways onto other subjects. However it's still a little possible The Traveler sacrificed itself for a bit of both emotion & survival which could keep The Traveler good but add some depth. If it turns out to be a false God then the closest thing we have is the story of God in Demon's Souls where you go to face the great Demon, The Old One but as your journey progresses you come to realise people indirectly think The Old One is God. If it turns out like you stated & it's deeply christian with little changes it'll be like the game Chrono Trigger which is the entire story of Jesus put in 1 game. The Crucible, seems to also have realigious as well as cultural relations, The Iron Banner reminded somewhat of Rome & home it is like a trainning arena. We must remember Destiny has made a perfect Medieval Future game, so looking at humans past culture & multiple realigions is a good idea because as you said these stories have lasted a long time. Beyond that if you want maybe try to see cultural relations besides the realigious relations You covered this pretty well on all the key points so it's a little hard to add on more lol PS: Very bold move saying your realgion now-a-days that must have not been too easy for you to decide with what people might say. I agree with you that freedom of realigion means sharing & discussing our cultures, looking at new ideals, & getting along as adults should. However sadly most adults act like kids on this matter that when they hear someone disagree, they don't wonder at they're perspective instead they want to fight, which is ridiculous.

              • I think the last city on earth is slightly similar to noah's ark. a few of every species gathered in one place. perhaps with the intention of one day repopulating all of earth. and as for the guardians. I see them being similar to angels. warriors and bringers of light and piece. fighting for a god like figure. perhaps guardians can ascend to another plain of existence becoming more ' awoken

                • Cool parallels, man! I've been wondering about the religious beliefs in Destiny. There obviously are many. The Speaker is a High Priest for crying out loud! Also, the Holy Spirit is often described as a "breath" because the Hebrew word for spirit and breath are the same word. Also, the Speaker calls the Traveler "a broken god." Please disregard the mean comments below. It's okay to talk about religion. :)

That Spinning circular Shrine of Oryx is definitely alluding to the Kaaba located at the Great Mosque in Mecca. The Fallen seem to be Zionist Jews. The gamealso has an surreptitiously dark tone. For instance, you play as a Warlock and you slay Wizards. Etymologycally, the term "wizard" has always had a positive connotation while the germanic warlocke, always had a negative association. All the "Light" talk is also reminiscent of Gnostic interpretations of the bible, which deify Lucifer, the promethean light-bearer, as the good guy and Yahweh, the old testament God, as a jealous and vindictive lesser God and not the Creator.

I really appreciated your lens here, especially as a seminary student interested in interfaith dialogue. Common "watering holes" like this seem to be an ideal place for the type of respectful dialogue you're encouraging. The fact that this is a game and not a topic more explosively charged only helps lower defensive reactions and promote thoughtful listening and feedback. Well done, sir. After only checking this video, I'm joining this group. Here's to being "Killworthy" in-game, Bearegrine (xboxLive: Bearegrine)

                      • There's religious parallels in a lot of works, Lord of The Rings is an easy example, hell Star Wars has it. I think it's just a universal human thing where we recognize these themes because there are a lot of works with very similar basic themes.

                      • I just watched your destiny secrets videos, and you have some great speculation! I do believe there is a trinity element in the game, and this extends to your other ideas as well. Rasputin would be the God figure with an ultimate plan and goodwill, such as is seen by his actions through the array. It was God who destined Jesus to die for our sins and likewise it was Rasputin who armed ISIS to sacrifice itself. This would make ISIS/ the Traveller the Jesus parallel, and it would also mean that it is not organic but created and is being commanded by The Warmind. The light that is shed in its dying breath is the Holy Spirit, which is especially apparent as it enters the Guardians. The Trinity parallel also fits your tricorn theories.

                          • So I noticed no one has commented about this but 3 shows up alot in destiney. 3 person teams 3 classes 3 races. Even the tricorn is a triangular type shape. This can actually mean two things that I know of.. the trinity (god, jesus, holy spirit aka body, mind, soul) or 3 being evil cause it's half of 6. Now this could have been all unrelated being the triangle is the most stable structure but think of the classes as well as races. Classes- warlock, hunter, titan. Titan, fights with physical methods and revolves around strength. Warlock, magic from the light in everything they do. Hunter, a loner who focuses on skill. This all translates to titan=body, warlock=mind, and hunter=soul Race- exo, awoken, human. Exo, a robot race with human like AI. Awoken a mysterious race that are very spiritual. Humans, known for their undying spirit. Again a connection to the three. Now that's not all the traveler represents god, the gaurdians are jesus and the ghosts are the holy spirit. This all is interesting to think about.

                            • I wonder if there is a simpler story pattern that Destiny follows, just like most religious stories do. A hero is needed to save humanity, this hero (or savior), gives their life in the process, usually willingly. It is a good formula for a story that people will enjoy because of the acts of heroism and the ultimate good deed of giving your life for another. I think it is interesting that this formula for a story is so common. It shows that, as a species, us humans feel the need to experience heroic deeds and accomplishments. These usually come in the form of religious stories because the religion gives us something to believe in. So the story of the Traveler, on the surface at least, is that of a heroic entity giving it's life for us to survive, though I believe that the real story Bungie is telling is much more complex and engaging.
