Xbox 360 : Will Destiny need a Mandatory Install and then played in the Disc Drive like Wolfenstein?

So, after checking the Achievements (looks to be pretty easy) and discussing the Raid Matchmaking, I only have one final concern to be raised with Bungie and DeeJ; and this question is central to my decision of whether or not to preorder and buy Destiny. If you don't care about the Xbox 360 or the issues that people who own one face, please don't just troll this thread with nonsensical responses. Right, as anyone with experience with Wolfenstein : The New Order or Titanfall on the Xbox 360 will know, you have to do a mandatory install on the HDD and then run another disc in the drive whilst you play. What every 360 player also knows is that the 360 suffers from overheating issues, even on the Slim or Elite, they still get burning hot, which can lead to no end of problems. The thing about W:TNO and Titanfall is that they do NOT allow for FULL installs, and their developers state that it's to minimise the install size and improve "efficiency". PS3 owners of W:TNO could fully install the game. Now, I don't care if Destiny is 50GB, I would like the option to FULLY install the game to the HDD. I'd rather not risk burning up my £200 console for any game (even Destiny), and as a game that is demanding of your time, I would hope that Bungie realise and understand this concern from Xbox 360 users. Some people will be ok with running the game in the disc drive, and more power to them, but I and many others are not, and so we would like the choice to fully install the game, irrespective of how big it is or how many discs it is on. Edit : I would like to add that neither Wolfenstein : The New Order or Titanfall have the option for digital downloads on the Xbox360. This is a developer choice that is an increasing trend with cross-gen games. Technically, the 360 is a hardware relic, but I hope Bungie can get full installs for Destiny on it. This is my final concern, but if it HAS to be played in the Disc Drive, and not from the Hard Drive, then I'm afraid that's a deal breaker for me. And for the record, I know "that's what it was built for" and there may be "technical limitations" but until I get an explicitly detailed technical explanation, there's not point in raising that point or discussing it.

  • If you're buying digital, yes you can play off the HDD, if you bought the disc, it supposes supposedly does an install to your hdd bfore you can play. I say supposedly because even after it finished, it was spinning the disc to play the game. I ended having to do a manual install. Regardless, whether you get digital or physical, you should be able to play off the hdd so long as the game is installed. On a side note, destiny is the only game that has made my xbox sound like it is overheating when it uses the disc to play the game

  • Disc install to the harddrive is available. Although even after just the mandatory install the disc didn't spin, but I installed the disc to the harddrive anyways. It runs great so far.

    • Ok I have a question of my own. I have 2 xboxes and I have 1 account both of my Xboxes. I brought destiny digitally and was successfully able to download it on my other Xbox, but then I downloaded it on the one I regually use and it says I need a hard drive installed to play destiny. I was so upset. It finished downloading about 7 gigs but won't let me play. And as you know on the slim Xbox the hard drive is only 4 gigs. I have the Full game on a flash drive that is 16 gigs.. Do I need to transfer this content onto an even bigger hardrive instead of a flash drive? Please if someone could help me out text or email me @ tayvonchamale@gmail.com

    • None of my 360s every overheated. In fact, the only prominent problem was the disc drive laser crapping out after 5 years.

        • I have the game in m Xbox 360 right now and unfortunately, it's only 1 disc. I say unfortunately, because if it were 2, then it would be good content like HD packs and such. So it seems to be pretty small...

          • New(ish) information : https://twitter.com/majornelson/status/505090783112732672 I heard about this in a thread on GameFAQs, so I checked it out. Neither Titanfall nor Wolfenstein : The New Order had digital versions available on the Xbox 360 because they HAD to be partially installed and played from the disc simultaneously. This is quite interesting news, assuming Larry hasn't made a mistake, because it would strongly suggest that Destiny is fully installable. Perhaps this will information will help someone get a concrete answer.

              • This question is very important to me too. I install games for two reasons: 1) Reduced wear and tear on the disk drive/laser 2) Reduced heat and noise output. Both of these are important but #2 especially so as I live in a small room in a house with other people so keeping the temperature down is good for me and keeping the noise down [the disk spinning causes a lot of vibration noise in the room below] is good for them. I'm really hoping that either the whole game can be installed to the HD like most games, or at the very least [if it's two disks] we can install disk 1 to HD and disk 2 to a USB just like with GTAV and watchdogs [i'll happily take a little increase in loading/pop-in times over the heat and noise of it being read from the disk.] Bungie, please tell us if we can install the game so the disk stops spinning shortly after the start of play.

                • I'd like info too. Titafall is not available on Games on Demand for my 360 Elite, and thus I didn't buy it. After completing GTA V my 360 started to do weird things when I do not use an installed game. And, thinking that my lens has only seen the damned GTA V, makes me wonder about the quality of the components used to bring us a 360 console... I have hope though, since the beta was downloadable on 360 and it worked very well (at least for me).

                  • "I genuinely don't care if I never get to play Destiny, " It looks like you do care. It really, really does look like you do care. Either that or you are attempting to raise great enough concern in others they might want to cancel their own orders. Have you ever had a Bungie product that burned up your console? Have you considered that the way they programmed the game may very well require less than that 30GB of space? There is no way for you or anyone else to be able to determine how much processing is required of your console and how much is performed by the server, thus your concern may be way too much caution. Yes, I am aware of how hot an Xbox can get, but I am also aware of the fact that no company, most especially Bungie, would intentionally produce a product outside the handling capacity of its target consumers. Too much reputation is at stake. The protection devices built into Xbox turn the unit off when too much heat begins to build up. When this happens THEN it is time to stop playing the game and seek a refund or just stop playing the game. And then it will also be time to purchase a next gen console, or be stuck playing the games that are soon to become as scarce as hens' teeth on a console that continues to decrease in value. I say it this way because it really does look like you care to play Destiny. retired 35 yrs. electronics technician

That said, at E3 it was mentioned that the X1 WOULD be able to download the digital guardian edition, but there are "no available retailers" for that, either. I wish I had better news for you, but I have to say "wait and see". http://www.destinythegame.com/wheretobuy?bundles=digitalGuardian

                    • Any news yet ? I would also like to know because I plan on upgrading for the sole purpose of Destiny . It's only 20 bucks for a 60 HDD. It won't affect me at all , as I have no problems with my Xbox 360. But it's still good to know if we can fully download the game on are 360s .

I'm in the same boat, but with the ps3. Every now and then, especially in the summer, I hear my fans kick into overdrive and I wonder if this is going to be my ps3s last year. For that reason I buy digital whenever I can to minimize moving part and thus heat. I can dig it, bro.

                    • Thursday 14th August. Waiting for this question to be answered. I've seen that it has a 20GB install on the 360, but no word on whether it'll require a disc being actively played in the drive. Seeing as W:TNO was nearly 30GB and Destiny looks to have way more content, I'm going out on a limb and saying 20GB isn't the full game (though that would span 3 discs min). Would really like some clarification on this issue.

                      • Halo 3 is a prime example as to why a developer might prevent their users from installing to the HDD. This will explain the technical reasoning behind it. http://halo.bungie.net/news/content.aspx?type=news&cid=16252 So any game that handles it's resources in the same manner will suffer the same decrease in performance. So let's take a look at Titanfall. On the 360 Titanfall requires a mandatory install for its HD textures. Since it is mandatory that the package be present on your HDD to play then even if you installed it to the HDD it would want that package to be there. So now you have that one arm trying to read from two different parts of the HDD problem again. To fix that they would need another build which doesn't require you to install that texture pack. So this build would be the one that requires a mandatory full install of the game. Basically I think it is the devs catering to the users that don't have large HDDs. Remember a lot of 360 packages didn't have large HDDs out of the box. A lot of these people may not have upgraded their HDD either so a game requiring a 20GB or 30GB mandatory install would turn them away instantly and piss off those that bought it and can't play. Especially since external drives have a max of 16GB of storage.

                          • I would automatically assume it's going to be the same as Titanfall and Wolfenstein. People who own last gen consoles, but want to play all of the games available for the next gen's should understand that these games weren't designed for your console. We are in the next generation of gaming where everything needs to be bigger and more immersive. 1080p and 60fps are the standard. Massive worlds to explore are to be the norm. Last gen consoles have been pushed to their limits, and to bring you games like Destiny and Titanfall, this is what they HAVE to do to get it to work on outdated hardware. I understand how the OP feels, but honestly, how long do you expect developers to produce last gen versions along side each next gen release?

                              • Monday 11th August 2014. Still no response and barely any interest for an issue that is going to affect tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of gamers. Instead, most of the community chooses to argue about speculation and other typical "ITT" petty crap. Yeah, it may be lonely as a sane person, but at least I'm not a patient in the asylum.
