I was talking with one of the cashiers at my gamestop and she brought up a good point. Why were they pushing people to pre-order so they got access to the beta only to open it up to everybody? I, along with many other people, felt "exclusive" playing the beta, and then anybody could play it. I don't know, just my opinions, what are yours?
Edit: ok I get the fact that they wanted the maximum amount of people to test the game and experience it so they would eventually buy it. But I still feel the "exclusivity" was lost, I can't say "yeah I played the beta!" as did 4.5 million other folks did

Well, let's not forget video game development companies like bungie at the end of the day are a business. They need to make money to pay employees, release new content, maintain existing games, and develop new games. Outside of the obvious stress test, this was a very ambitious game. Getting as many people to play it and hopefully like it and buy it is smart from a business standpoint. Concerning the whole exclusivity thing I think it's important to note that bungie has kept it's word. I know when I pre ordered the beta code was pitched as "play the beta before anyone else" which even though I played on xbox I still got to play it before it went open beta. I got kicked off a few times during that 2pm deal so hopefully they got some good data and come 9/9 we won't have any server issues. As far as exclusivity goes, you should get things like an exclusive sparrow and what not (presuming you preordered at gamestop?). It also seems the limited editions are hard to find now that the beta is over so if you got on that bandwagon, that's another exclusive thing for you. Beyond that, no doubt after a few hours in the game we'll all be finding superior loot anyway. See you starside

The biggest reason is a major stress test. There were four point six million people playing the beta at its peak and that is only the rough estimate. Needless to say there will be way more on day one and they needed to have some kind of idea on how to be prepared in the slightest.

Virtually every beta test in the history of game development is eventually opened to the public. The last benchmark for testing is stress testing.

To stress test their servers so you won't expect laggy servers/server crashing on launch week.
-
It's a beta and not some exclusive dlc. If you had to pay extra for beta access then, yeah, it would have been an issue. Remember, a pre-order is just a purchase of the product before it officially releases. You really did nothing more than a person who buys the game at release. So don't feel too entitled.

Bungie even said it: stress test.

The Beta was never advertised as a closed Beta (which would be exclusive), it was advertised as a PUBLIC beta (the opposite of exclusive).
-
Maybe there wasn't enough pre orders to do the massive tests and this was the only way to get the numbers up. This is also why I think the moon was only open for two hours this way EVERYONE is trying to do the same thing at the same time. It was a test
-
That's a good point but like the people before me said stress test. I also went to a gamestop a day before xbox beta opened and the guy said they were out of codes. I don't know how true that was at the time but it sucked for anyone trying to get a code that day. I like to believe that played a part but im just dreaming
-
Well u payed 5 bucks to play it days before everybody sooo yeah they only played like 2 days
-
It was for community feedback, mainly. That way, Bungie can fix the problems that we're reported before launch. At first, I thought Bungie re-opened the beta when I read the title of this.
-
The pre-order urging was to get you to set it in stone that you are getting the game. Then they opened it to everyone to test the servers and/or get more people to experience it and join they're quest towards world domination
-
Pre-orders and most importantly, stress test. Quite a few games had rough launches previously and I believe Bungie does not wanna go through that kind of problem.

It was only the last weekend, no harm no foul, they wanted a server stress test and LOTS of people buy games they didn't pre-order. Hope for the best expect the worst kinda.
