Not to mention that Bungie has already hindered the current gen versions to maintain parity with the last gen.

I naively assumed this would be possible, given that Microsoft itself doesn't distinguish between Xbox Live as in there is a "Xbox 360" and a separate "Xbox One" version. I'm pretty steamed that Bungie won't allow same-platform-gross-generation play, at least for co-op, because most of my Xbox friends don't have the Xbox One yet. I get Bungie's point about Xbox One users having an "advantage" over Xbox 360 users in terms of higher pixel density (and therefore more accurate shots?), but that only applies in competitive multiplayer.
