The problem with "showing" what Bungie does best.

(There's a question at the end you can answer if you don't want to read all this) Let's stop for a moment and think about what Bungie is trying to achieve with Destiny. Besides a great story, universe, gameplay, and characters (you know, the easy stuff), they're trying to design a multiplayer experience unlike anything anyone has ever seen. That may sound overly ambitious, that is, unless you know Bungie's history. About 9 years ago, Bungie revolutionized (and basically created the modern format of) Xbox Live. Halo 2 broke so much ground that it was literally years before the competition caught up. It was the most-played game on Xbox Live for 2 years straight, holding that spot for a year after the 360 launched. Every modern Xbox Live experience is built on the framework and expectations that Halo 2 created. 11 years before that, Bungie shipped Marathon with the capability to play netgames, something no other shooter had on the Mac at the time. In both these instances, Bungie created something a lot more than a multiplayer experience. They did what they do best, possibly better than any other game company; they created community. Instead of just giving players a way to shoot each other, they gave them a way to connect, have discussions, and take part in the culture of Bungie itself. This is in part because of how awesome the core content is, and even more because Bungie purposefully fosters those communities with free tools, such as this website. You'll be hard pressed to find developer-fan-communities as old and as ubiquitous as ours, and you'll never find one as kick ass as ours. There are still active groups that were formed during Halo 2, and some of us even continue to play Marathon netgames on a regular basis 2 decades later. In Destiny, this talent is being fully realized, and incorporated into the game from the ground up. The company that does it better than anyone is about blow everything they've ever done out of the water. But how do you show this? How do you convey the millions of hours spent in Halo 2 custom games, in Halo 3 forge sessions, or on the community forums? How do you advertise the creation of culture? I don't really have an answer for that yet. I'm not sure it's possible. The "public event" we saw tonight was a step in the right direction, but I'm not sure what they're trying to do with the game as a whole can be conveyed instead of experienced. Regardless, given Bungie's track record, I personally think it's easily worth waiting around to find out, and I know plenty of us are going to stick around even if we don't see a single thing that jumps out at us in a trailer. For what it's worth, that trust has been earned. So my question to you is what do you want to see in the next few trailers? Hopefully the next set won't be under the constrictions of a trade-show presentation, and I'm sure the old ViDoc's will be back sooner or later. Personally, I would like to see some of the exploration, as well as player interactions in some of the "safe" areas.

I want to see if you can fly your space ship over the ground on the map, like the halo banshees.

      • I'm looking forward to the space flight personally. This feature will be something very new and revolutionary to Bungie's games and to console games as a whole. I feel that this will win over so many gamers unfamiliar with Bungie, and put Bungie ahead of the competition by far.

        • Agree on exploration. Abit more info on the safe areas too. But more space travel , other planets etc. And more examples of "dungeons" and encounters. Perhaps a lush jungle enviroment, will there be more ambient animal life besides the flock of birds shown in the E3 gameplay vid? I want to really see if it truly is a living world for us to explore (talking mainly about earth, since it probably will take the next years for us to do so to truly explore everything just on our tiny planet) And more vehicles.

Nicely put, Silent. I haven't slept yet, so I'll keep it brief: I want to see more space. More flight. More flight in space, with ships perhaps. Oh, and more about what happened. It seems quite curious that we were nearly wiped out only to be saved (seemingly late in the conflict) by an unknown alien orb. Is it a ship? Is it actually an entity itself? Who is this Traveler?

          • Personally I would like to see a vidoc for each character eventually. For example: a single player view of each of the classes. Also if we can find out if weapons are class specific. Can Hunter only use Rifle based weapons. The warlock can only use Machine gun based and then the Titan only Rocket and Heavy machine gun? All things that I would like cleared and will ask in the next mail sack.

          • It's like us trying to fathom technology 50 years from now or trying to think about how the 4th Dimension works. We can't. It'd take experiencing it to understand, just like Destiny will.

          • I want to see customization, in-depth. How we'll customize our guardians, how we will customize our ships, our guns. But mainly our guardians.

          • I have been with Bungie since 2005 when I first played Halo 1 and 2 after I got the Xbox for my birthday. Bungie has been my number one developer that has never disappointed me and gave me the fun and adventures I have always wanted to experience. I am very excited to get my Xbox One for Christmas and get my pre ordered copy of Destiny later in 2014.

What game can be completely demonstrated and have its emotional experiences squeezed out as easily as an orange? Whenever I see judgement based off of a trailer or similar demonstration, I'm unconvinced. Even when I see judgement based off of first-hand gameplay itself, I'm unconvinced. Only when someone swims through the game and examines the many treasures that lie in the abyss do I then say, "That's your opinion.". As for the question, I'd like to see some sniping action. If I'm to leave personal bias out, though, then let's explore a different celestial body, -I know I'm getting ahead of myself. The Earth's massive.- perhaps the moon.

          • Great summary of how the Bungie secret sauce is hard to see in 12 minutes of gameplay. I'd also like to see the social areas in the next trailer. I'd like to see them demonstrate meeting up with friends in a safe area, possibly some crafting of items before setting out in a space ship with friends to take on a dungeon. I'd also like to see the PVP content.
